Is VR dead?

If anyone is interested in getting into VR with a cabled experience. Amazon have the Pico Neo Link 3 on offer for £184. Having had this as a replacement for my reverb G2, can honestly say it's about as good clarity wise and with a better FOV. can't fault it at that price

Just saw something interesting in a physics video this morning on YouTube about a new technology called a nano crystal display or something similar. Unfortunately there are way too many other similarly named technologies dating back 7 years that are not related to this.

Rather than having a pixel pattern made up of different color emitters, each emitter could change color and it could make that change in nano seconds.

This is still in the very early R&D stages in laboratories, so it may be years before we see anything in a commercial product.

This is supposed to show how it's changing from emitting green to emitting red.

This is the weirdest review yet. Very difficult to follow because his strange way of talking. But I understood the following cons:

He said that it's a "well known issue" that the Pimax Crystal has a "world scale problem". This is actually the first time that I heard about it. This while I thought that I knew everything about it.

Second issue that he comes up with is that it has according to him "a lot of barrel distortion" this is also very weird since I have zero barrel distortion and as good as all reviewers (except sadly and his friend) had also as good as zero barrel distortion.

This brings me to the believe that this guy had the same issues as sadly; he doesn't know/understand how to wear it correctly. If the felcro on top is incorrectly positioned then the image is distorted, he probably didn't understand that too since Pimax doesn't document that properly.

But why are you only posting the negative reviews of the Pimax Crystal @RCHeliguy ? I never see you posting all the positive video's about it and there are lots about it. You only seem to post video's about it from people that have issues with the software or that don't understand how to wear it correctly.

TBF, the bsb wasnt exactly glowing. The guy had to finish watching a movie on the tv as the glare was so bad in the bsb and that was its original use case. Then he had to hack away at the gasket while he called his perfectly normal looking face an edge case?? After market headstraps used to make even the lightest of headsets usable. But you can pay more for the headstrap that you should have got in the first place.

Other than that, I get what you are saying :)

He didn't have the top headstrap when he made that review. It is now included.

As for the rest. It is what it is. Let the chips fall where they may.

That would make the HMD unusable. Hard to follow him so I missed that.

Now that I watch it again I see that he indeed has the felcro in the complete opposite as it should be (at least with my headshape and everyone that tried it here(quite a lot of people)). I would also suffer from all kids off visual issues/distortions when I put the felcro like that. So same user error as sadly for sure.

Heli wasn't referring to the pimax video but the bsb one.

So the sweet spot is small… for him?! It’s the only big issue I have with my G2 reverb .

People are using sweet spot to mean two things.

He is talking about how precisely the headset needs to be centered on his eyes for it to look sharp. The small displays require much tighter alignment than headsets with larger eye boxes.

Both the FOV and edge to edge clarity is better in the BSB than the G2. The production BSB is supposed to have improved the edge to edge clarity which is the other meaning of sweet spot that you are referring to.

It's just easier to keep to the definitions that have been around forever than say there are two meanings. Some may confuse the two but the sweetspot is the correct placement of your eye to get the best picture. Edge to edge clarity is just that, people may have confused its name but we can't adopt two meanings that are very different things.

Agreed. We don't need more confusion.

By all accounts there is more clear image to see in the BSB than the G2, it is sharper, has deeper blacks and better color. But it needs to be precisely fitted, which is what the custom interface is supposed to help take care of.

That said, even Will from Boosted media mentioned having his BSB move from the sweet spot requiring him to occasionally reposition it on his face. The top strap should help with this, but I'll be very curious how this works for me personally. I've heard some people have kept the strap loose to help with the feeling of forgetting you are wearing a headset, but it will still require some pressure to stay in place.

What I'm hearing from some people who have production copies is that the BSB has glare that shows up some of the time. I've heard a few people now say that the irony is that the BSB has more glare when using the BeyondVR application to watch movies than in any other application. I've been told repeatedly that its glare is less pronounced than the Index. However, I've also heard that it presents differently than the Index because the optics are very different. So I can't use my experience with the Index where I was mostly oblivious to glare as an accurate reference point to judge what my reaction will be with my BSB.

The success of the BSB will hinge on their ability to get good scans and to produce accurate custom interfaces more than any other factor. The headset isn't perfect but is very good visually and definitely well past the point of being a viable product. So it will sell well if most people have a good out of the box experience.

I've chatted on discord with people who got a perfect fit with their first interface. However the experience Mike had from VR Oasis, indicates that some people will not get perfection. It looked like they made multiple attempts for him and he still felt the need to modify his. Considering he has been working with BSB for a while, his experience carries more weight. It also means that there will be people who have very different out of the box experiences. While BSB has said they will work with anyone who has issues to get it to fit well, we all know that people handle initial disappointment very differently.

I've also been told that since the VR Oasis video was created before the final production version shipped and BSB was still working on optimizing the interface scanning software and creation, that it has improved since then. So..... we wait to see.

Anyone using SRS MC with Witmotion sensor and SFX100? Is the sensor fast enough that the compensation works solidly? The setup seems very cumbersome and there are steps that need to be done every time, or is there an automation? For my Valve Index, is this the best solution currently?

It is a setup once solution. They do say if you have not used it in w ahile you should recalibrate it which is just a keypress when it is in a level position.

It has worked fine for me so far but I have not tried to be very critical of it so it looks like it is doing its job, removing any extra headmovements not generated by myself, i.e. banking, surge.

A sim racer Pimax Crystal review: https://vrxesports.com/pimax-crystal-an-unbiased-review/

Covers iRacing too, I didn't cover that because I don't play iRacing at this moment.

I agree with him about the battery charging cable on the side. I also don't understand why it's not included on default by design, but I get ~7 hours now with 100% brightness and just the USB hub connected(no cable on the side of the HMD) so not really an issue but it's still a design flaw that whole battery thing.

So if HLA is currently considered one if not the best AAA fps game out there, why not rebuild HL2 ?

Community project? I've tried to start Black Mesa few times but just couldn't get past few hours, feels so dated and clunky, we need full remake from Valve to make it even remotely interesting to new players.
