Is VR dead?

I guess that Samsung really, really wants to release something this year,
while Samsung Display microOLEDs won't be ready until 2026.

The current state of uOLED's is not large enough, low yields, very expensive. I suspect most companies will stick with QLED for the next couple years while this technology ramps up. I'm still happy that some companies are making the jump to push production to improve.

I see the current state of VR as being same ole, same ole. Still compromises no matter what you choose. Still very strong opinions about what priorities and deal breakers are. Still VR headsets coming that will be released without enough GPU to push them properly for many sim titles at least at launch.

And yet, I find myself happy with my 4090 and Beyond, while others are happy with their Crystals, Quest 3's, and Pico 4's, etc.. I hope the people I know waiting for the VR1 are likewise happy, although likely happier with a 5090 when it arrives. So despite the headset technology frequently being released a ahead of the GPU's that can drive it well, there is room to be happy today :)

Great experience with the Crystal here.

I wouldn't go back to compression artifacts and half of the Crystal resolution. The Q3 is far from perfect for now, but the Crystal isn't perfect either. There is no "perfect headset" on the market.

But for Quest 3 budget the PSVR2 is probably a better choice than the Q3 currently, if I must believe all the reviews about it.

I would gladly spend 3K for a perfect headset with 45+PPD and a bigger FoV but it isn't available.

To each their own.

From the review from Tyriel Wood i hear that the Quest 3 has the better picture quality inside over wifi.

For me personally the Quest 3 was an impulse buy, but i'm very happy with it. Especially Dirt Rally 2 and AMS2 look stunning in VR.

Just a general tip for Quest 3 owners if you get prompted too much about the guardian system and you need to a room set up every time, there's a way to permanently disable this.

You need to enable the developer mode and this will allow you to disable the guardian system.

Agree, those two titles are just next level in VR and also give me the best experience!

The Quest 3 is of course a great choice too, but its nice that there more choices now recently for around the same budget; PSVR2, Crystal light and Quest 3. Until a half year ago for that budget there was only the Quest 3.

So not a bad year for VR. Lets hope that Somnium comes with the VR1 including local dimming and working eye tracking and Pimax with the Crystal Super and then it's really a great year for VR. And of the software side: LMU VR, AC Evo.

I've not seen any reviews saying that.. but I've seen plenty saying the opposite despite whatever perceived advantages there are on paper. This reddit post breaks it down nicely with lots of a/b through the lens shots.

User reports on Discord say so and MRTV is also very enthusiastic about it. I dont want to spend many time researching it further, since I already have a good hmd.

I have a feeling that based on how VR helped transform GT7 for many players. Taking a console game to a new level of immersion and fun factor. This current scenario we now find, I believe will be a step in bringing more PS5 owners to the PC market.

Not so certain, as many PC gamers will consider the PSVR2 to then be tempted to buy a PS5 for also enjoying GT7. Yet their is something quite cool about that and we are seeing lots of comparisons now between the Q3 or other PC VR headsets in the popular pricepoints.

Isn't the only video to mention, that in certain scenarios (night/blacks & colours) the PSVR2 can be richer/better looking than Pimax Crystal or Quest 3. Very much seems to depend on the scene and user. If they prefer a sharper or clearer image but like many headsets we see these factors.

The main problem I see with VR is not the improvements in hardware and more powerful GPUs.
It's actually developers fully incorporating it in new titles and doing an excellent job of it.

So far, tell me what new racing titles, in the last 2-3 years for PC has succeeded in this?
Will be interesting to see what happens with AC EVO or how many months after release, will it need to be updated/patched before it works well in VR?

This was the beauty with GT7, it worked and worked quite well, even just to experience the car models alone. It was just another way to appreciate the detail and fun for car lovers the game offered.

While a lot of focus here will be on sims. I wonder what has been the last "blow your socks off" title on PC with VR? One that encourages new adopters or sells the hardware and that is one of the problems.

VR1 demos at Somnium Connect and Flight Sim Expo 2024 ran RTX 4070Ti.
Steve had to drop his resolution to 80% to get acceptable frame rates and remarked on how great it looked if you actually ran it at 100% but the frame rates were too low.

That tells me that VR1 owners will be happier with a 5090.

It doesn't mean you can't get by with less, but by now you have to know that needing more and more GPU is a VERY common theme with VR headsets.

Not only that, since the VR1 can resolve more detail and has more FOV, there will be more polygons rendered to get that improved FOV.

Yes, Somnium's demos all ran 80% resolution with sharpening.
Any VR headset having resolution high enough to eliminate SDE without optical filtering
and with substantial FoVs will benefit from all the GPU moxie that money can buy.
I intend to wait for 6090, but we'll see...

Seems the guy in the video also didn't turn off link sharpening in the Oculus Debug Tool, which is IMO the reason why people still see compression artifacts. With 700+ MBit with a cable I can't see any and the image looks as natural as with a DP-port. In WiFi-mode I prefer Steam Link with FFR, which blurries the edges a bit for clearer image in the center. Tyriel Wood seems to have done it right. The PSVR2 is on Quest 2 level.

Mid-level ARC cards continue to impress me.
Is there anybody else here using them for simracing under VR?
I cannot believe how smooth and clear they are when running under those conditions.
I've owned the card since December of 2022 and the level of improvement is quite remarkable.
It'll be very interesting to see what Battlemage level of performance will be when it arrives.

Hoping for further great improvments of the Intel GPU in order to have some competition with NVidia. Unfortunately AMD is leaving the race and we certainly don’t want to leave NVidia alone.

We saw how some compeition on the CPU really improve the performance and the pricing. The AMD x3D CPU outperforming Intel in terms of performance, power consomption and even pricing.

I doubt the AMD GPU situation is permanent, but it does suck that they are skipping the ultra high-end this gen. It was leaked over a year ago that RDNA 4 was having some technical challenges, which is why AMD decided to focus on getting a stable product for the masses. I anticipate they will be back in full force with RDNA 5, but I guess we'll have to wait 2 more years to see how that prediction pans out. 😐
