Is VR dead?

The world is full of opinions. We all have to decide what is important to us.

The Aero feels heavier than the Index which feels heavier than my Rift did and this trend has gone way too far already!

I wasn't until I recently put my old Rift back on after not wearing it for many years that I realized how much better it fit my face and how much better it felt being that light weight.

I expect the BSB to be a transformative improvement to my experience in VR.

And I'm sure that one day we will have edge to edge retina ppd with vast FOV's, but for now we don't and just because something isn't the absolutely highest ppd available doesn't mean that it can't deliver a much better VR experience.

I've never been this excited about a headset and I've enjoyed VR since 2016.

This will be a headset custom fit just for me and no other company offers this.

The difference must be HUGE, ~1900px upscaled vs 2560px native. It's even lower than a Reverb G2.
Any reason they do that, G2 was pushing 2160x2160 through without any compression.
Why this limitation?
Looks like another HMD full of compromises just like Crystal.
I agree with @HoiHman, the only possible thing that can save the market and hopefully will be worth upgrading to is mythical Index 2, if this thing ever happen.
Otherwise

Is 75 not enough for sim racing ? I remember mo old oculus S at 80 and it was very smooth for racing .
People are blowing this all out of proportion. 90Hz works fine. There is a lot of speculation about how well it actually works that isn't correct. There is a big difference between being able to see a difference and it not looking good at 90Hz.

I full blow by blow technical article is coming soon to explain how this works.

No controllers are needed at all for sim racing.
I would also recommend 2 base stations like gamma recommended.
VR Flight Sim Guy said he was going to try a single base station test for someone and it may work well enough, but with 2 you can be assured it will be excellent tracking.

As far as the clarity goes, I've tried a G2 and the center of that screen was pretty sharp. With the Frankenfov I could make out individual pixels barely. The BSB has G2 ppd on the outer edges of the display and 50% more ppd in the center. So I don't think clarity will be an issue. Of course the blacks and color will be the best currently available. The Aero is very sharp and with the latest red shift adjustment I've been able to see what it is capable of in terms of clarity and I'm pretty comfortable going from 35 to 32ppd in the center of the display.

VR is a weird product space and opinions vary widely. I hope the BSB works well for you.

For audio the BSB has a USB-C plug on the right side of the headset. I got one of these USB-C DAC/amps to plug my IEM's into. With this tiny amp the impedance and efficiency of the IEM's or headphones won't matter much. Of course there are wireless solutions too.

Getting ot a bit but I wonder how this miniature usb-c dac stacks up against the one you linked. 6g and really small. There are other form factors as well.

Are you looking for audiophile grade USB dongle or just smallest form factor.
L&P W4 today is the top of the line, you can also pick up their previous flagship W2, it's great too.
In general for the on go applications if you are planning to use with the phone, BT adapters are more convenient. FiiO BTR7 with LDAC support and dual THX AAA amps is astonishingly good, can be used as USB DAC too.

EDIT: Link to the L&P retailer

Vividly remember a while back how someone was vigorously defending advantage of 120hz on Index.
Absolutely. I enjoyed that frame rate. Nothing has changed there.

Bigscreen is going to present a detailed technical explanation behind how this works.

To be VERY clear, I don't understand how they could both leverage native StreamVR without a compositor and also intercept the video stream and compress it before it gets to SteamVR.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I don't know how that would work. There are definitely parts of this that I don't understand well enough to talk about, so I'll wait for the "official" explanation. There have been discussions going on and on and on about this. Unfortunately when something is difficult to explain people go for simpler explanations that they do understand.

The bottom line is that I only care about how it looks to me.

I had looked at some of those units, but the main issue is whether it would fit or not. It's a small space that it plugs into. I'd be concerned that the small lip would fit in the space it has.

Since you can get one of these in just a few days from Amazon and you are at least a month behind me getting a headset, maybe let me check the clearance I have on the one I have to make sure it will fit before ordering? It's up to you.

I also know one guy posting lengthy youtube videos discussing BSB while not ever having his hands on one. :D

So this guy was just lying to cause trouble after Will said some nice things about the BSB.

The comment from the CEO is absolute nonsense: Will get's paid by Bigscreen when someone places a pre-order! Bigscreen sponsors ALL influencers/content makers that apply for their affiliate marketing program. So it's a straight lie.

And the saddest of all is that this CEO still didn't give an official clarification about what is going on with the upscaling of 1900px resolution to 2560px resolution that sadlybrad discovered.

Coming from the G2 Reverb I’m sure the BSB is a nice upgrade .
1- much more comfortable because it’s much lighter and smaller,
2- better resolution
3- better clarity
4- better color ( Oled).
5- BETTER vertical and Horizontal FOV? Can you guys confirm this ?
6- much better edge to edge sweet spot ( the G2 has a tiny sweet spot).
For the absence of audio solution I don’t care.. even with the G2 I’m using my usb 7.1 headset .
The only thing that bother me is the 75hz limitation. Eye tracking isn’t a big deal for me.

The BSB does have larger FOV than the G2. The biggest improvement is horizontal. It is clearer edge to edge but the outer 5-10% drops off in quality.

It also has no moire or red shift to compensate for.

Once again don't discount running it at 90Hz.

Also you won't have any Drift during a race like some report with a G2. Once your headset is centered, it will stay centered.

I'm curious if it will behave like the Index does in iRacing where it remembers your center position between reboots and when you put your headset on in game you are already centered in the cockpit.

panels usually scale resolutions that are nice percentages like 3/4, 1/2 etc
Bingo! Differences between rational resampling and directly rendering are often imperceptible.
Otherwise, JPEG would never have been so successful.
Moiré (visual intermodulation distortion) is more obvious when rendering patterns
(e.g. picket fences, fabric weaves) or high contrast edges (e.g. black and white text).

Finding (or generating) examples that make BSB resampling look bad is not hard
but rewarding mostly for pessimistic perfectionists (AKA malcontents).
