Is VR dead?

VR with eye tracking: Varjo Aero from a Sim Racer's Perspective
"more visual clarity" (but FoV limitation, chromatic aberration)
Eye tracking is used for auto IPD adjustment,
foveated rendering requires VRSS 2.0, currently unsupported by any racing sims;
eye tracking demo @ 9:50 / 50:00

Isn't VRSS NVidia driver level thing with support for any HMD, considering title made it to supported list?

Wait, for that money it doesn't even come with integrated audio speakers? Sad state of VR today. :(

This prototype lacked them; reportedly will be with production devices

Fixed foveated rendering works for any VR HMD;
eye-tracking foveated rendering needs VRSS-2 compatible HMD eye tracking.

I thought they said they would be shipped with earbuds at production.

I saw in that Boosted media video that he is running a 3090 and had to pull his resolution back quite a bit in ACC to get 45 fps for reprojection to 90 fps. That and many are reporting only getting a FOV in the mid 80 degree range.

I looked that this headset and considered it for a bit. It won't be released for another 3-4 months (assuming they are on time) This looks like the ultimate "impatience" headset. I strongly suspect something will be announced in that time window that is more what I'm hoping for.

At this point I'm doing my best to wait for whatever the best headset is that coincides with my getting a 40 series card. I think based on history that I should wait to get the video card before I order a new headset. And while I'm excited about the next big jump in technology, I'm not having any issues happily using what I own now.

That said if the Index 2 drops and if it really has on board graphics processing taking some load of the PC's GPU I could see ordering it.

This VR tech (retina resolution for eye-tracking foveated rendering) will presumably be cheaper
by the time affordable GPUs can drive it at full resolution and refresh rate.
My concern is whether my vision will still be good enough to appreciate it by then.

Microsoft's HoloLens 3 's--t show'
  • Mixed reality vs HoloLens team infighting over strategy: consumers vs. enterprise (and military)
  • HoloLens 3 was reportedly canceled in mid-2021
  • $22 billion Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) for U.S. military has major issues
  • decision to partner with Samsung is causing infighting within the mixed reality division

The whole Magic Leap AR completely tanked. They are supposedly trying again under new management. They have some absolutely great concepts, but those concepts were not enough to carry the other weaknesses in their product including price.

AR will be absolutely huge when it is done right and integrated with smart phones or whatever that device morphs into, but until then I don't see much happening.

I'd love to try it before I buy it, tbh. It would mean a significant financial investment for me to move to VR for AC, and the uncertainty over image quality, FPS and compatibility with glasses makes me very reluctant to make that leap :( (although it does look really cool!)
What what ?
Are you me ? :p
Thats exactly my position.
At least I tell myself that I HAVE decided to buy a high end VR set soon(C)
- but first I have yo get into W10/11 (from W7)
- and worst I have to invest in a PC able to max the rather meagre display quality its possible to get in a foreseable future in VR.
But the decision is taken!
- I tell myself :roflmao:

For what it's worth, I did move to VR (mostly). I bought a used GTX1080 and a used Samsung Odyssey+ (£200 for the pair) and my current system is able to run AC on fairly high settings with a field of 24 cars). Just an ideal situation, tbh, and I can even wear it over my glasses (although I did spend £10 on some thin-framed wire ones I could bend slightly to move them awway from the VR lenses).

Good luck, though

Oh, btw, it is really cool! :x3:

Yeah the glasses thing is also urgent.
I use glasses but have decided to get some kind precrition glasses insert to the very  high end VR set I tell myself I will get.
Reason: I understand it like the extra distance between eyes and display using normal glasses will lower the all ready rather low FOV in most sets.

Crash and burn, from the same article

The metaverse is still a joke

All these issues circle back to the main problem, which is that virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), and augmented reality (AR) are still all cool ideas with little utility for regular people. That may change, but no one has been able to crack that nut so far. VR is still primarily for gamers with social sprinkled in, but it has a long way to go before being mainstream (if ever).

I have been following this company some years.
Something I just dont understand is why dont they go all in into VR?

Not sure if this has already been posted, but Sony has provided a sign-up for updates to the PSVR2

Whilst from a technical perspective it's not anything special, I'm probably still going to get it as the experience is hopefully going to be at least as smooth as the old one. Assuming I can get my hands on both it and the PS5! :D

I am a little disappointed with what is coming out this year VR wise that is announced so far. I was hoping we might get a reasonably price standalone and wifi 6e capable headset this year that wasn't Meta that would give us a decent PC VR wireless experience with good headset resolution and some nice lenses and screens. Everyone seems to be chasing after other niches leaving Meta the bulk of the market.
