Is VR dead?

There was a time when M$ could persuade vendors that VR/MR
would be the next big mass market craze that would also drive serious PC volumes.
How this that work out?
Was it specifically MS and not the whole VR industry?
BTW, WMR is still alive and well with continuous support in Windows updates, of course only HP is stupid enough to still keep making headsets and Pentagon signing up for 22 billion AR HoloLens contract.

Looks like VR industry works in reverse, instead of making better and cheaper headsets we are getting more expensive crap.
Except for Oculus....
They are subsidizing their headset and basically own the stand alone market now that they will milk for revenue.

The Dark Side is winning that war right now.

When people start seeing that they are not users but product of the company when they signing up?

Would you use Facebook as an example to help prove or disprove that people are willing to give up cheap or free services despite knowing their data is being sold.
I don't use it, period, without "would".

There is zero chance I ever buy a headset from Facebook. PiMax well I backed the 8k and I got completely scammed by them, they never got me a headset I could use and they just plain removed features I was meant to get as part of my backer goals. That is a spec sheet and a render from a company that has a giant history of terrible products and scam like behaviour, you preorder that thing and you are just asking to get ripped off at this stage, you can't claim now you aren't aware how PiMax conducts itself!

Still waiting for what I would consider over and above my Odyssey+. I could have maybe bought a G2 but was hoping for a bit more as part of the next headset. The market still seems to be growing at least and maybe it will be a standalone headset with wigig but pinning some hopes on Valve at this stage to make something decent or maybe Samsung with a newer Odyssey out of the blue.

G2 v2 that was just announced can be actually a good option to buy some time (year or two) before we see (and will be able to buy) something from Valve.

I don't think its worth it. Its just a resolution bump over the odyssey+ and that isn't enough of an improvement. I want wigig/wifi 6E for wireless and decent hand controllers that track well so I can get my room scale back combined with better lenses and more resolution and ideally foveated rendering from eye tracking so it both looks better and runs better!

So Pimax has now basically reached the FOV that StarVR had and are claiming a combination lens Aspheric in the center with Fresnel on the periphery. QLED, high contrast, high resolution, high response rate.

They are announcing 60GHz wireless, face, hand, body tracking.

It basically sounds like the Index Deckard leaks with a "projected" year out and they make this announcement.

Do you get the feeling they were worried that they would be forgotten with the other announcements? Announcing a headset a FULL YEAR OUT reeks of desperation. Why?

What is the Pimax year multiplier these days?

When I see this announcement, what I think it does is make the Deckard leaks more plausible and I think Valve is much more likely to pull it off and deliver a great product.

We may actually be entering the promised land of what VR could be, or at least those with the wallets to afford this.

Not going to shill for G2, it has its issues like atrocious facemask (that apparently is fixed in v2), but resolution jump was staggering enough to pack and sell Odyssey+ the same day I put G2 on. Plus it's what, $500?
The problem is how to drive all these pixels.

Maybe for now, but VR is still a new market and Facebook is trying their damndest to be at the top of the pile. There's no guarantee it will work long term.

If VR is important to a user I don't think price is the main concern (its a factor), I switched to the G2 because it was a better headset. Facebook might always have the casual market, but they will have to fight for the top end of the market.

Facebook is Meta as Metaverse from Ready Player One now. Just as evil as corporation featured in the movie. :roflmao:

And they are killing Oculus branding altogether.
Oculus, however, got a refresh of its own following Thursday’s event, as CTO Andrew Bosworth announced Meta was phasing out the Oculus branding. The Oculus Quest product line will become the Meta Quest line, and the Oculus App will be called the Meta Quest App. Those changes will begin to take effect in early 2022, Bosworth said.

Computer says no. Mine does at least, its saying I'm lucky it can run the G2.

That depends. The Varjo Aero has no screen door effect at all and they said that you could subsample until your computer could handle it and they said it would still look much crisper and clearer than what you have now.

In that case you would still have Aspheric lenses so better clarity, no god rays
and all these new headsets are supposed to have much better brightness, contrast, and color gamut.

So there are ways to make this work with existing computers and still have some major improvements.

I'm sure I could get it working but I wouldn't like to buy a device that I can only half use due to my PC. Maybe if it just has more clarity by default because of the features you mention there might be some temptation.
