Is VR dead?

What I pick up from it is that he is now giving the Aero lip service for build quality, but seems to be preferring the BSB and Crystal as his top two headsets. He also mentioned that he is under NDA for the Varjo Nov 27th announcement, but that if you've ordered a BSB he said you are safe.

So you are using link cable or VD ?
Please post your setting ( oculus debug tool). Did you receive your new 4090?
I'm not using the link cable for video, only as charging cable.
RIght now i'm using Virtual Desktop for streaming because it has a much much better interface than the regular Oculus Sofware and the ability to run native OpenXR.

In Oculus tool i have set the max bitrate at 960 (using the copy/paste) and nothting else.

I got my RTX4090 Saturday and the improvement in AMS2 and ACC is pretty awesome. I still have to checkout other race games ect ect, but i'm currently short for time.

Also WRC, even if it's on the 49" monitor, is still pretty awesome with motion

According to the tracking information, my Bigscreen Beyond is estimated to arrive Nov 24. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about that :)

For many others, the wait is continuing. Because the Bigscreen Beyond headset is customized, there are many things causing delays for people who ordered and the headsets are only approximately being shipped by preorder date.

The headsets are assembled with specific IPD's which I assume are is based on some kind of bell curve for sizing. So if they are running low on your IPD, it can cause a delay. Since there is no room for glasses and many people ordered prescription inserts with their headsets, there are some not shipping because the inserts didn't pass QC. Waiting for a replacement set of lenses is adding a few weeks to some for the delivery time. There are also some custom interfaces that are not passing QC.

They are still doing their best to explain what is going on to their customers, and I've seen posts by people who have been notified that their prescription lenses or cushions didn't pass QC.

I am happy to see that they have good quality control. It benefits them to launch their product by shipping known good copies both in terms of overall cost savings for support and shipping and of course the bad press they would receive if they sent out headsets with issues.

It's easy to see how these manufacturing hurtles are expected given the complexity they brought on themselves. But as you would expect, there are many restless people anxious to receive their headsets.

Interesting about the issues on the quality and their QC.
I saw some posts in their discord also. But good that they have a QC, especially for the first production batches which usually are prone to problems.

I think custom interface is not so much a problem, but for the VR lenses, prescription lenses and the OLED that would be a major issue .

Did Bigscreen inform about which part of the specs did not pass their QC? Where does Bigscreen produce their VR, interfaces and their prescription lenses? They just mention that their team is "a remote team distributed across 6 countries, with offices in Los Angeles, California"

I am very keen to see the new product of Varjo which should be announced on Nov. 27th!
Hopefully a consumer product and if not then we willhave to wait for the consumer version I suppose.

Hopefully it will finally have a great horizontal and vertical FOV!
The low FOV is for me definitely the problem with the Varjo Aero and Bigscreen Bezond (the Pimax Crzstal being much better). The low FOV is OK if you drive some LMPs/LMDh or for Formula and flight sim it is a no go for me.

I really hope varjo don´t go for big fov and instead focusing on retina and sharp image where it´s important. We have pimax going for the other spectrum and there is another new player as well which my goldfish brain already forget about doing the big fov thing.

For me it´s something you want but you really don´t in the end because it compromises so much on other important areas. When we get to 16k then the luxury will be affordable to go for larger degrees of fov. Why on earth we would want 220 or something silly I don´t know we are not horses with the eyes in the side of our heads. We are good at seeing sharp in a very small spectrum thus smaller fovs is quite fine.

The new varjo headset seems to be XR4? More mixed reality focused it appears though they certainly seem to plan to constantly give new versions of the aero as well further on.

The clarity of the next VR goggle will be improved for sure.
And we will get closer to a monitor.

Compared to a wide screen monitor most of the VR googles are ok in terms of FOV.
BUT not compared to a triple monitor setup. At least at the moment.

I am for sure looking at the next Varjo.

And like many of us I am looking at the Somnium VR1.
Especially the VR1 with eye tracking, hand tracking (and mixed reality if the timing and pricing is right). Hand tracking is just so immersive and passthrough is certainly the future.

VR Flight Sim Guy has already said that if you've ordered a Bigscreen Beyond, not to worry about the Varjo announcement.

The email I got from Varjo mentioned the following as the agenda:
  • Revolutionizing immersive maritime training solutions
  • Kia launches new car model to stakeholders with XR
  • Panasonic innovates UX design with VR
  • New tracking OS offers simplified immersive management
So I'm not sure if they will put another announcement in there, but many suspect it will be a commercial offering if they do.

In other news:

I'll guess that they've ramped up to ~2,000 headsets a week. I'll also guess that they will surpass the Aero, Crystal and VR1 combined in volume.

VR Flight Sim guy has just named the Crystal as his favorite headset for flight simulation. He mentioned that he almost went for the Bigscreen Beyond, and would have if it wasn't for the glare. He also said that if you used your headset for anything besides flight simulation you may feel differently.

I can imagine, because 75hz won't be usable with anything outside flight simming. I just tested 72hz with my Pimax Crystal and I'm glad that I only had to use that once and that I could enjoy the full non upscaled resolution at 90hz in every title. The lighthouse tracking and eye tracking now work both also flawlessly and the software is now rock stable with every feature except "smart smoothing"(something that I'll never use/like/want to use). I'm still really happy with the Crystal too so I understand his preference.

Still digging!

He was saying that if you did anything outside of flight simming that the Bigscreen Beyond would likely be your pick. He's repeatedly said that he couldn't imagine using the Crystal for room scale games and in this video said something to that effect. His reasoning wasn't about tracking either, it was all about the size and weight.

Not only that, but he's repeated what others have said about the 75fps refresh rate feeling MUCH better than that and just as smooth as 90 fps.

The response time is 100X faster than microLED's.

And to be fair he has mentioned the glare being his main issue with the BSB from when he first got it.

I'm very glad you are happy with your Crystal, and I hope to be happy with my Bigscreen Beyond. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but are polar opposites in many areas. Given how very different they are, I find it very interesting that the VR Flight Flight Sim guy has them as his top two headsets.

Bobo M3 is a must for Quest 3. It’s another level of comfort

I have never used vr for anything else but sim racing but in the last week I’m using Quest 3 as standalone vr watching 3D movies using Big Screen apps and the effect is really awesome.. it’s like setting in a real cinemas.

Guys! I'm going to need to compose myself!

This Bigscreen Beyond is love at first view!

SO SO SO much nicer than the Aero! In so many ways!

Plugged it in, installed the head strap support and got to it!

So far I've just been in FPS games. I'll get it on the sims tomorrow.

I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO RESERVATIONS about this headset it is freaking fantastic!

Sure release this minutes before my BSB is supposed to arrive.

Seems that its really a dark-games-only device according to him because of the glare issue which is quite significant. Since that guy uses his hmd almost solely for beat saber it seems to be a good device for him. But I was also shocked that he said that the face cusion had to be taken off already after 20 minutes of movie watching. So it sounds great for short beat saber session (which I wouldn't care about at all, I don't play that kind of stuff) but that it's not great for almost any daytime/bright content at all because if the glare issue. In fact, when I see vr flight sims videos I always also see him mainly enthusiastic when he's flying in the night with the BSB but once he talks about daytime flying he doesn't like it and seems to prefer other headsets. From both YouTubers I understand that it's a deal breaker. And from the example part in the video that you just posted I understand why.. it's simply too distracting. It's not a small side effect that you can get used to but a constant flaw in the image at bright/normal daytime scenes.

So you must question yourself: do you only play horror games or do only night races/flights? Or do you want a HMD that works for all scenarios? In my case 95%+ of the races are at daytime so it won't be usable for me.
