Is VR dead?

Eventhough it sounds like I HAVE decided that I will NOT invest in as example a huge VR kit as Crystal - then I have not.
But because I at the moment only own a rather low end Win7 PC I will sit back and wait for some serious reviews of the Crystal.
And maybe later the 12K thingie :cautious:
Before I update my PC and maybe take the plunge/decision.

CatsAreTheWorstDogs: Beside the extremely attracting formfactor in the Bigscreen then Im also attracted by the integrated lens prescription thing. I use strong glasses and as I can see with almost other VR sets then prescription lenses is some kind of sidestepping the problem where you in some way or another have to compromise the FOV if you want to insert either glasses or an extra prescription lens.

A Reverb G2 has come up at a fair price in my area, should I get it for sim racing on my 3080/13600k system? Is WMR going to work for the next few years even if it doesn't get updates? Is the G2 a worthy HMD?

I've got a G2 V2 on a 12600k/3080ti system and, even in ACC, it runs @90fps smoothly on OpenXR with foveted and slightly less resolution than native (I'm on something like 2800x2800 per eye). I've also did the usual tweaks on WMR settings.

In my opinion the G2 remains the best bang for the buck from a Drive/Fly simmer point of view. There's obviously more cool stuff out there but the budget for let's say an Aero and a proper 4090 machine will skyrocket, to achieve more eye candy, but still with compromises and to me it's not worth it yet

Thanks for the replies folks.

You mention "OpenXR and foviated" and "the usual tweaks on WMR settings", can you share more info on this? What do these mean and how do I do this?

.
Thanks but man VR is complicated.
Do you know of a good video with how to use this and how to get the most out of the Reverb G2?
Like why is there so many different ways to supersample? Which one is best to use and is one more important?
That's tough.

The Fixed Foveated rendering set to performance will generally improve your performance.

But yes there is a learning curve. So far I've followed a monkey see monkey do approach learning from people who are spending a lot of time experimenting.

We are at least lucky that OpenXR is becoming a standard that more and more applications are adopting. The OpenXR toolbox may have a lot of buttons but at least they are evolving and improving in a way that we can use with many titles.

I'm reading about optimizing MSFS in the Varjo Aero discord, and it is still interesting to me how much of a moving target all this software is.

Varjo just released new base software with motion smoothing and the ability to lock to a 30 or 45fps vertical refresh rate. It's been well received in the flight community.

Full configuration involves the following:

1. New Varjo Base software settings.
2. Suggested Nvidia Config
3. Suggested OpenXR settings ( MSFS supports dynamic foveated rendering )
4. Suggested MSFS graphics settings pretty well maxed except terrain
There are different DLSS settings ( Performance, Balanced, Quality )
MSFS currently supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 ( beta )

MSFS using DirectX 12 beta runs more efficiently and smoother, but sometimes crashes.

The good news is the reports are that this allows for amazing details. 45fps is smoother and 30fps allows higher graphics settings.

Typical systems in this forum are high end CPU's and 4090's.

MSFS has been a busy place for application development.
First they added DLSS 3 support around November 2022 and now they are bringing DirectX 12 support online.

The Varjo Base software motion smoothing has also been called predictive motion smoothing. I've been told it is like reprojection at a (3:1 or 2:1 ratio)

You could just go to AMS2 and have stunning VR out of the box without all the drama of ACC.

100% in Steam is 1.4x native, this is to restore original PPD after barrel distortion correction.
You don't have to use 100%, btw. With ACC you can also drop render resolution within a game and enable Temporal Upsampling, that gives sharper image and saves some performance. With OpenXR you also have Foveated rendering that helps a lot when enabled.

I'm getting errors with openxr/composite? I will reinstall it all again and try.

Could you elaborate on the problem of using prescription glasses (or inserts) in VR?
I am considering getting into VR.

the problem of using prescription glasses (or inserts) in VR
Where to begin?
  • Eyes must be close to VR lenses for decent sweet spot;
prescription inserts increase distance, impacting sweet spot.
  • Many eyeglass frames are too wide for many headsets
  • Some of us, effectively blind without eyeglasses,
flail helplessly between removing eyeglasses and getting into headset with inserts,
then later the reverse. As someone who programs sim driving software, this sucks.
Running e.g. Visual Studio in VR is for me a non-starter.
  • some HMDs do not support inserts
  • bifocal or especially trifocal eyeglasses are terrible in HMDs,
which want full view designed for about 2m distance.

Thanks for the explanation!

what is the best solution or VR googles if we need prescription glasses?
