rolling starts?

I have noticed that every race has a standing start.

There is an option for rolling starts if you select GT specs in the set up of the server I believe.

IT seems that if you are not racing w/ a 3 pedal set w/ clutch you are going to get eaten alive on a standing start.

how do we request a change of status on this? I have not been able to find a thread or forum section to post this.

What do you guys think about standing vs. rolling starts?

We have done a formation lap with a rolling start in the past.

Cool concept IMO, usually we got really clean starts (no pill ups in T1), however the guy that starts 25th is even further behind the leader. I also did a poll somewhere not that long ago about it. The majority voted against.

I am a fan of rolling starts for endurance races, mostly for the safety reasons you have already pointed out. I am torn on the subject when it comes to sprints - it does clean up the starts (especially for the GT cars) but the end of the field can definitely drift too far back. Seems that the time you would lose to the leader would be much greater from a rolling start than a poor standing start (based on my experience with rolling starts previously).

Well, rolling starts do have some benefits over standing starts obviously.
It can greatly reduce pile ups at T1, it cancels out starting problems for people without a 3 pedal setup as you pointed out.
However there is one great draw back imo; We used rolling starts in the RDGTC league. It was intended that the race starts when the first guy exits the last corner in the formation lap. The idea is absolutly awesome however for the guys at the back it is impossible to make up ground at the start.
I often found myself way behind the guy infront of me.
Reason for this is that the speed at which the formation lap is done is not restricted, and offcourse you can say that the maximum speed is 120 kph but nobody ever hold on to that.
In GTR2 for example there was an option to do formation laps but if i remember correctly it was the game who drove it for you so no matter what you were always at the same distance from the guy in front.
Sadly GTR-E doesn't have this option.
And personally i like the chance of having a monster start and overtake 3/4 people coming of the line.

In Camaro Iroc-Z league we make rolling starts. However, I like standing starts better, and I don't have a clutch pedal. And sometimes I can start pretty good, I use clutch for start though, only not the pedal but a button on the wheel. I wish I had a better wheel, but G25 is too expensive for me! Maybe next time I can buy something with 3 pedals:)

I agree with most of the opinions about rolling starts. I personally don't like them as the guys at the back are at a disadvantage over those in the front. As Marcel said, there is really no way to enforce/police the speed limit on the formation lap. In my opinion, good idea, bad execution. I don't use a 3 pedal wheel, but I don't have any problem getting off the line by dropping it into first with my rev's set at about 6500 rpms and feathering the throttle to keep traction. Lately I've been getting better about getting off the line and usually pass 1 or 2 cars instead of them getting ahead of me. Let's me know that I think I know what I'm doing.

as a racer i like the rolling start and i think its possible to gain a place maybe 2 at the start but you have to have perfect timing for that, i know i have gain one place at the start of the test run for the Camaro challenge. i will also add that the field can be as tight as for a standing start if the guy at the front knows how to do it, when the movie for round 1 of the CIZC will be released watch it and you,ll see what i mean.

as a race director i,m not sure i like them espascially in a racing club race as the rule have to be inforce ( yes it can after the event with penalities ) but its alot of replay watching which for me i don,t have much to do as have many things under way like all my fellow staff members.

I like rolling starts too. To eliminate the formation lap, what we've done in the past is to do the abbreviated rolling start where it just takes the field back 500 yards or so and puts everyone on speed limiter until the driver crosses the start line. Turn 1 is much better under this situation.

I have never seen that at RD. We could try someday.

I had thought this was how it operated in GTRE.

you could simply police it by using a replay audit afterwards in the replay theater?
