Tactile Immersion - General Discussion - Hardware & Software

@Mr Latte Ill be with you soon ;-) Rig build has started.....going to look to start installing and wiring the amps and working out placements for all the units next week. So wont be long now.

Something did cross my mind that I dont have the answer to and wondered if anybody could shed some light

I have 2 soundcards in the PC , currently one is going to dedicated to 6 channels of tactile. The other just has a set of speakers on the F/L jack. My headphones are Astro A50's running off of USB.

So that leaves me 4 channels with nothing plugged into the second sound card.........could I use those for tactile as well or will it get confused ?

Goodman, several people are starting to get on-board with this concept/idea.

What I am wanting people to do is bring their own experiences and opinions and help discover what works best for each user when it comes to effects and placing effects to specific channels.

I had hoped for 4-6 people to have installations ready and then have a specific thread for this as really this thread has become a monster in so many different areas of tactile.

If we get that within the next month then I will do such a thread and we can discuss each and every effect individually in detail and share effects we all may create or like.

Soundcard Usage:
My assumption is Shakeit should treat any soundcard as it is configured in windows, I believe you just need then your USB headphones set as primary audio device. Any other cards should then be selectable to use for tactile. If you have a card also used for speakers as a "primary audio device" then that card is locked to that usage.

Mounting the larger BK’s today and hopefully the exciters . All temporary placement so I can run the wiring and connect up the amps etc . Not sure about mounting the bigger o RS so it’s definately going to be a journey of experimentation !

re the sound card ..... I’ll do some testing , I can see a need for more channels down the line

@groove200
This helps inspire me to get off my ass and do some more work on my own build. I really could do with getting the seat section having all the tactile installed to then let me combine the exciters with the BK and continue experimentation with effects creation of both.

Own rig Update:
This week I purchased a rack for equipment and some of the cables I need. Damn, it's friggin costing me a small fortune on interconnects with the additional hardware I am/wanting to use as well. My layout has inter-connects coming from:

Soundcards - HA6000 - MS8000 Distributor - Multiple Amps
Thus also having duplicated outputs (from distributors) going toward usage of "Dual Role" or for monitoring the "Audio Frequencies" via my digital mixer/ipad etc. Having things connected this way I can see all the frequencies for upto 18 channels and also (importantly) what changes applying more "bass" via the HA6000 does, compared to the standard output.

I have decided, I will only use the digital mixer to alter the output of "Game Audio" and part of the mass of these interconnects, is the ability to monitor any games audio in 5.1. both via professional apps/plugins in the DAW but also on the HA6000 units installed. With the HA6000 you can easily also just plug in headphones to the "Center" channel or (any channel) to also hear what audio it is getting. I have an interest in learning more how/what way different titles utilise their effects (subwoofer and surround channels) are examples. This is an "audio tinkers" toolbox so to speak.

An example of possibilities:

Sculpting Game Audio:
With this installation, I can then do anything that a DAW enables with game audio. This is one thing I wanted my own build to be able to do, as it lets me alter/modify (any sounds on any channel) within any game/music/media. Its altered/output can then be mixed with any of the channels Simhub/Shakeit is using for the rigs tactile or I can just use specific units for audio roles only. Furthermore, it enables tweaking audio for speakers with its own independent mix or alterations applied. I have much to experiment with still and this is just part of a hobby in itself as a side-project.

Improving Tactile Effects & Effects Pairing:
Feel alone is not fully ideal, so I will share benefits this additional hardware offers for the tactile.
I can use this additional hardware to then show people what not only my own effects are doing (regards frequencies generated from combined effects per channel) but also effects they or others create and share. This is why I am keen to work with others and share this additional level of science/research to enable better combinations of effects and their frequencies to achieve better performance. It is still upto each user to combine or use whatever effects how/where they want, as this is only to help us learn and analyse what is happening with the tactile.

My Build Progress FEB 2020:
One factor that puts me off is I don't want another temporary testbed installation. The seat support section will become so heavy with everything attached and as I need a complete base frame/platform built to support the 8020 (and future SFX motion) also yet to be bought. I was thinking it may be easier to build that base section first and then get the 8020 purchased to finally let me put in place my steel tubing and isolation section the seat will bolt to.

I really am at a crossroads as how to proceed but thinking it may be best to do the base section first rather than have to later start dismantling things. I also do not want to mark/scratch the several hundred quids worth or new steel tubing and clamps I have purchased already for this.

Remember to setup your soundcard for 5.1 or 7.1 device, so different channels are available; if only stereo mode is selected, just one channel will be available.

So managed to get the BK advance fitted to the rear and the Aura under the pedals . BK seems to be placed well .... man that thing can thump . I’m getting some Vibration somewhere at the front from the Aura so I’ll have to revisit that mounting or see where it’s coming from . Run out of time for the exciters but most of the wiring and amps are in place .

just had a quick test in Sim Hub to make sure things were actually working , don’t even have my screen or wheel/pedals mounted yet so still a way off actually testing and tuning .... but looking forward to it .

Got my nobsound 2x100w amp, and the 2 dayton 40w exciters. Mounted them to either side of my seat, at the bottom, eiher side of my hips you could say. Firstly the stick stuff is absolute rubbish, they just don't stick, i had to use really strong double sided foam to make them stick, no issue though.

I'm runing the amp at 10% and it feels good, it feels right. Deffinatley gives way more immersion, i setup in simhub wheel slip, gear shift, road vibrations from suspension telemetry.

Thanks for the help on here, really glad i made the purchase!

Can you share the exact product names (or links even) please? Thanks!

Sure, see below:

(already had this so this is what i used)

I used 3 meters of speaker wire which i got from Richer Sounds.

Glad you found a decent feedback from the setup! :)
I´m still finding the best location, today I will be trying under the seat, left and right buttocks.
So far shoulders and thighs have been somehow disappointing.

I think its easy to get tied up in tuning and less time playing lol. Here is a picture of where I have located mine.

Keep in mind guys, these are good for direct presence, this is why using more than one pair is recommended. It also lets you then place (favorite effects) going to more than one unit for wider/improved dispersion with a comfortable volume.

@jayk, personally I had no problems sticking these to the back of my seat. Do wonder if anyone else has issues with them not sticking?

@sn4il I honestly do not know.
As a mixer it should let you output an input to various outputs.

@groove200 keep us posted on progress, I want to get some feedback on your BKA and Exciter combo.

Buttkicker support fail. I emailed them to ask the spec of this thermal fuse and if they could pretty please send me a new one, and a "Lead Technician" replied:

"..the symptom indicates it’s blown. Unfortunately it’s not replaceable or the unit repairable at this point, as that’s an integral part of the circuit."

A bit terrifying when a company that sells tech with basic circuitry finds the idea of replacing a 50 cents soldered part on a circuit board some kind of voodoo. Additionally, that if you blow the fail safe on their product their advice is to throw it away. I've probed beyond it and the bones of this unit still works fine.

So a heads up. If you're Buttkicker stops working and they tell you it can't be fixed, PM me and I'll tell you how to fix it.. or buy it from you as is :)

@Mr Latte have you considered creating a blog too? I imagine it is frustrating saying the same thing over and over again rather than just link to a blog post about e.g. transducer comparision or other areas where you have all this knowledge. I bet most people read the first page and last 5 of this thread and miss lots in between.

I hope you are back in business soon.

I hope you are back in business soon.

Thanks. I will bring it back to life I'm sure. Might use it on a mono channel on the pedal board to fill in lower frequencies because I'm not buying another one. It was mounted to my isolated seat pan, but I just rebuilt the base and now the rear seat mounts rest directly on these Aura units on isolators. It's so efficient I fried the BK trying to make it keep up. It's kinda ridiculous how much energy this setup transmits up the seat frame into my back. The seat pan is isolated from the frame, so I have another of these transducers on a mono channel where the BK was and playing around with effects with this before adding anything else. This is more powerful than I expected applying some of the delay strategy I've read about bumps.

I studied Electro-Acoustical Engineering at University so this is a fun way to experiment and leverage some knowledge. I'm not a hardcore sim driver and not trying to become one as many in this thread are. My rig is home made with a car seat and I pulled it apart and there's no way to mount the recommended exciters efficiently - these seats are made to ABSORB vibration. It's all about getting energy into the frame and this mount is killer. Going to try and feed energy in from the top where the headrest attaches to the frame at the top. Might be cool.

What might be of interest is I've tested a bunch of cheap circuit boards matching them to different transducers and have found some real winners.. the best one costs $4 if you buy it out of china:) Will do a post when I have some more time.

I was close at one point in doing a YT channel based on tactile, more of a casual vlog with experiments/testing etc. It too would become time-consuming. However, this thread was never meant to go to 100+ pages or for it to be like an organised guide.

I have tried on several occasions at different times to do specific threads on tests or specific tactile topics and getting others involved, to share things I have discovered or effects I had at that time been working on. They do not generally work as few will get involved and I then lose patience or interest.

This past year in particular with what Simhub now makes possible has really let us take tactile to offer greater potential in immersion than before. I am waiting to we get a small number of people with this concept installed to do a thread focused on it and also share findings regards effects and settings with others.
