Florin Diaconescu broke away from the slipstreaming battles at Monza to take a crucial victory, and possibly a defining moment for him and McLaren. With positions 2 through 6 in the standings only combining for a meagre 10 points, Diaconescu's 25 points puts him 34 points in front. Behind, the damage was escalating to the leading bunch, Ben Herbert taking another fantastic podium to second place, but without doubt the biggest cheer was reserved for Sasha Jednak, taking a debut podium at Ferrari's home track. The drive was well judged, a fantastic drive that saw Jednak become the third counted Ferrari powered competitor and eligible in the Manufacturers.
Another rookie, Jimmy Laad, continued a great run of form recently, taking a great 4th place for Renault, while his teammate Fred Owen drove well for a 6th place finish. In fact, Renault ended up taking the most manufacturer points from Monza across their top 3. Rami Saidy took 5th, clearly Jordan's favourite position so far this season. Thomas Hackel secured his and Honk's best finish since Malaysia with a 7th place.
Before the race began, lead sponsor Heineken and Honda came to an agreement, the team from here on the official name being registered as Heineken-Honda. Unfortunately, the announcement wasn't met with a great performance, Chant and Macdonald taking 8th and 9th, still better than Online Racing, who took 2 points for the race.

At a glance
  • Diaconescu is now leading from Chant by a whopping 34 points. Namely, Chant and co. are all over one race behind him on points.
  • McLaren finished 1st and 13th. This haulage of points was 6 more than both Renault and Red Bull, no one got more points this race.
  • Renault, now with 3 full drivers, are making a real push at Ferrari in the manufacturers, only 72 points behind but remember that 60 points are awarded for a race.
  • Sasha Jednak scored his first podium of his career, a fantastic effort to beat a very experienced field. Same too to Jimmy Laad, although 4th, but now his best finish after 6th in Germany.
  • Next race is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where no doubt quite a few drivers will be on the hunt for a glorious home victory.
