He might be good in a controlled environment but in the "real world" he is miles away from any WRC driver, as we can confirm from his poor performance against Seb and all the other drivers in the WRC this year.

Um YEah.....if you REACh the Pinnacle of a class, ie. WRC and you don;t win, your not a good driver. So I guess there is really only one good driver in every class of motorsport each year. the rest are "poor performers" OH and I AM SURE it has nothing to do with the car your driving. I mean I have no doubts LOeb would have won in Block's car..........

Reaching the pinnacle doesn't always imply special skills. I believe that Block is there mostly to promote the sport in the US. Like Al Qassimi is there because someone pays for him to be there :)

Who said 'Special"? if you measure him against say 1,000,000 drivers from around the world I suspect he could beat almost every single one of them....so he really does nto have some "special skills?"

I mean its really simple in al forms of something. There are those who are the VERY BEST and other who simply cannot do it. But if he is not winning then he is not skilled? its a very narrow though that profess' this philosophy. He is simply not the CHAMPION. But this is not taking away from his skill. He is still probably better than 98% of all the drivers on the planet.

and I find it facinating that nobody argues with the original author of this thread. All I ever said is he is an ICON in America. Thats the simple truth. I am sure you have ICONIC people in your country that I am not aware of either. But I wouldn;t argue they are not skilled because they have won nothing on the world stage. It's really silly.

You are not a good driver when, comparing to others, even in similar cars, finish (when he finishes) after all the others. I didn't said nothing about winning, because drivers in the WRC who where unfortunate to be contemporary with Loeb may be forgotten because he is winning one championship after the other. The fact that , as you say, he is an ICON, doesn´t mean that he is not comparable to others in the same sport.

He beat Ogier last week and scored points in his 6th WRC rally ever. Hell, not even an F1 champion was able to accomplish that, Kimi is not even on the map after all the hype this year. Is he going to give Loeb (or Ogier!) a run for the championship next year? Of course not. But to discount him as being merely a showman is selling him short.

I agree that raw skill is not what got him into the WRC, but I do think the series and the sport is better for him being involved in the WRC.

Maurice Zondag and Simon Smith are joined by special guest FIA GT1 Driver Xavier Maassen to discuss the Abu Dhabi GP and exactly how teammates and teamorders are perceived from a drivers point of view. Download episode #4 here with added GridGirlGuru too.

Great broadcast Simon & Co! Loved the part about Le Mans and its true: You can't call yourself a motorsport fan if you have never been to the biggest race of all races.

See you all at Circuit De La Sarthe in 2011!

P.s: despite what you all say: Alonso will be crowned champion in Abu Dhabi :)

Monteiro started his carreer with Carreras at 20, I think that must be some kind of record in modern F1. Most drivers start it around 4-10 with karting. I guess there's no limit of age aslong as you have the money and do not plan to be a professional driver. Now if you're already a teen and aren't involved in motorsports yet, you can put a cross on F1.

Obviously the ideal plan would be to get a few years of experience in karting before going to single seaters. Now all depends of money of course.
