Althea Racing Ducati rider Carlos Checa won the second race today at this weekend's Imola World Superbike clash.
But fifth place and a did-not-finish for Leon Haslam (Alstare Suzuki) are enough to secure the 2010 World Superbike title for Aprilia Alitalia rider Max Biaggi.
Ducati Xerox rider Noriyuki Haga finished in second place, with Brit Cal Cruthclow in third for the Yamaha Sterilgarda team.
Fellow Brit Tom Sykes (Kawasaki SRT) finished in fourth position.

Hey guys,

Just had a interesting and heated discussion with a colleague about who our role model race driver is: of all existing leagues, present as well as past, of our own nationality.

Hahah, well, lets put it like this, we had some disagreements, he's from the Netherlands and I'm from Germany...:D

My ranking list was:

Schumacher
Lauda (ok, hes Austrian....but still German speaking ;) )
Schneider
Vettel
Roehrl

Of my Dutch colleague:

Verstappen
Bleekemolen
Luyendijk
Lammers
Reuter

So now we were wondering what other people think, other Dutchies or Germans ??!

People from other countries are welcome to post their lists too!
Of course it would be interesting to hear about different countries' professional race stars as well

Swedish Drivers:
Mattias Ekström - DTM Champion / NASCAR
Rickard Rydell - BTCC / WTCC
Ronnie Peterson - F1 (died at Monza)
Kenneth Hansen - 14 times FIA European Rallycross Champion (1989-1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000- 2005 and 2008) / 10 times Swedish Rallycross Champion (1986, 1988-1994, 1999, 2002) / 7 times Silver in the FIA European Rallycross Championship (1993,1995,1997, 1999, 2006- 2007, 2010)

Hmmm... so many disciplines.... I'll try and spread it around:

Mario Andretti (born in Italy, both can lay claim) (F1, Indy, NASCAR, etc.)
A.J. Foyt (Indy, NASCAR, LM24 etc.)
Richard Petty (NASCAR)
Steve Kinser (USAC/Dirt Ovals)
John Force (Drag)

Honorable Mentions:
Dan Gurney (LM24, F1, Indy, NASCAR, CanAm)
J. Johnson (don't like him, but can't argue) (NASCAR)
Phil Hill (LM24, F1)
Tony Stewart (Indy, NASCAR, USAC)

So you wouldn't consider Dale Earnhardt as one then? I sometimes get the impression from the "media" that he is looked upon as a sort of legend in Nascar.....or maybe he isn't well liked by the people and race fans?

I can't argue with his (Earnhardt's) legendary status, and certainly he has had _plenty_ of fans, but for legendary drivers I chose Petty as my NASCAR representative, and for honorable mentions threw Johnson in there for a current driver, and Stewart more for his all-round ability. If I chose strictly a top 5 NASCAR drivers list, Earnhardt (Sr.) would certainly be on it.
Earnhardt is something like Senna, worshipped by 50% of fans, and reviled by the other 50% (actual percentages will vary). I won't argue with 7 championships, but I never was a fan of his.

Just to clarify (though the original post is hilarious), "Group Lotus", which is the car-making company owned by Proton, doesn't want "Lotus Racing", the F1 team, to use the name "Team Lotus". The car maker and the F1 team are two separate entities, and if you ask me, Group Lotus is only trying to cash in on Team Lotus' popularity and relative success.

don't forget richard petty and Dale Earnhardt sr.

Valentino Rossi relieved at fast pace

Valentino Rossi got another pleasant surprise today when he topped the timesheets in opening practice for the Sepang MotoGP race.
Unsure how his damaged right shoulder would react just five days after his brilliant last-gasp third place in Japan, the 31-year-old cut a relieved figure in Malaysia tonight after setting the fastest time.

Rossi had been worried that the physical exertion of the Twin Ring Motegi weekend would leave him weakened for the gruelling challenge of Sepang’s heat and humidity.
Temperatures today nudged nearly 40 degrees but the Fiat Yamaha rider was in impressive form as he goes in search of a ninth podium in 11 starts at Sepang.
Ten minutes of the session remained when Rossi clocked his best lap of 2.02.724 to finish 0.109s clear of fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso.

Rossi, who clinched the 2009 world title at Sepang, said: “It is very good to be in front because it was a difficult practice. It was very hot and the track was quite dirty, it was very difficult to control the bike and we slide quite a lot. But I feel quite good and the shoulder doesn’t give me a lot of problem. I am just worried about 20-laps in the race because after some laps I start to suffer with a lack of power. But we expect this.”

Rossi said the Sepang weekend was the perfect opportunity for him to gauge the fitness level with his right shoulder. Severe tendon damage Rossi suffered in a motocross training accident back in April has hindered him ever since.
He said: “It was very important to come here because it is the only track where we try this bike with these tyres with me at 100 per cent in the winter. It is important to understand how much the problem of the shoulder is. But anyway, 100 per cent I will make the surgery. Even if I can ride well I am not at the maximum. It is also a good track to try and make the best because I am always very fast in Sepang. I think of the last four races, here and Phillip Island we have to try and get the good results.”

Like most of the MotoGP field, Rossi complained of rear grip issues this afternoon with dirty track conditions not helping lower lap times.
The nine-times world champion said: “It is very bad and the track is in a bad condition, mainly because of the dirt. There is not much grip and the temperature doesn’t help because the surface is over 50 degrees and that makes it the worst condition to try and ride at the maximum. But usually this track it comes a lot better with some more laps and I think it is possible to go quite a lot faster. Now we are quite far from the lap times of the past but you can see on the data, every time you open the throttle, the acceleration was much faster in the test.”

Rossi was clearly relieved that his shoulder was not put under severe stress on the second longest track on the premier class calendar and he told MCN: “It was a good surprise and I was very relieved. The target for these two races is to improve my best result that is third place. I make three podiums but always third. So I am happy if I arrive first or second.”

Jorge Lorenzo crowned world champion, Valentino Rossi wins

By Matthew Birt -MCN

Valentino Rossi gatecrashed Jorge Lorenzo’s MotoGP world championship party in stunning fashion in Malaysia this afternoon.
Lorenzo wrapped up his maiden premier class world title with a safe and solid third place in the 20-lap race at the Sepang track.

But he had to share the limelight to an extent after a dazzling performance from Fiat Yamaha team-mate Rossi, who claimed only his second win of an injury ravaged season.
Lorenzo’s success continued Yamaha’s domination of the 800cc MotoGP era with the Japanese factory securing a third straight title, and the Spaniard was ecstatic having secured the title with three races in hand.

But just as equally thrilled was Rossi, who produced a heroic display having been dropped from sixth on the grid down to 11th position on the opening lap.
Desperate to clinch the title from the front, Lorenzo grabbed the holeshot with Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso in close pursuit.
Casey Stoner had also made a fast start from fifth on the grid but his challenge for a third successive victory was a brief affair.

The Australian, who dominated the recent Motorland Aragon and Twin Ring Motegi races, lost the front of his factory Ducati GP10 at the final corner on lap one and tumbled out of third.
Behind him, Rossi had already commenced a brilliant charge through the field, the 31-year-old seizing fifth place from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Ben Spies on the third lap.
He then moved into fourth on lap three when Nicky Hayden made a mistake and the nine-times world champion then snatched third from compatriot Marco Simoncelli on lap four.
At that point he was almost 2.5s behind Lorenzo but the 23-year-old had already lost the lead to Dovizioso when Rossi pounced on lap ten to move into second.
Unwilling to engage in a dogfight with the title within his grasp, Lorenzo was content to watch Rossi and Dovizioso slug it out for the lead.

Rossi was phenomenally strong on the brakes at turn nine and dived under Dovizoso’s factory RC212V machine on lap 11. Rossi though was unable to pull away as he tried to conserve energy, his damaged right shoulder though hardly proving the major handicap he'd feared as temperatures hit close to 35 degrees.
Dovizioso regained the lead on lap 16 with a clinical move under braking at the first corner but he couldn’t shake off Rossi.
Rossi then made his decisive move at turn nine again on the same lap and quickly established a lead of close to 0.5s.
Dovizioso though responded and got to within 0.224s but was unable to defeat Rossi and claim his first dry MotoGP win.

Rossi’s outstanding ride secured him his first win since the opening round in Qatar and ended the longest victory drought in his MotoGP career.
Dovizioso claimed his second successive second place with Lorenzo taking a routine third to add the premier class crown to his two 250GP titles.
Spies claimed fourth place after he streaked away from a fascinating battle involving Alvaro Bautista, Hayden, Hiroshi Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli.
Factory Suzuki rider Bautista claimed a stunning fifth with Japanese rider easily claiming his best MotoGP result in seventh.

Hi,

Not sure if this was the best forum to post this question, but probably saves me multi-posting in different sim forums.

Looking for comparison videos of onboard video from the sim vs real-life, there are a few on youtube but mostly quite old now. I'm more interested in UK tracks really but really interested to see any.

I'm thinking of something like this :

If anyone fancies having a go at one I have 100s of real-life onboards from UK and overseas tracks on my Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/maxxuk

They are not F1 but cars I or my clients race, V8, Lotus, MR2, MX5, Saloons etc.

If anyone does fancy a go you are welcome to download any video and use it in your creation.

Maxx

PS. If you know of any similar on Youtube, would appreciate the link
