People race at all ages, there are series for 50+ but for F1 I think nowadays you need to be karting by 10 really. Its not the tallent, its the money financial backing that is the issue.

he;s absolutly correct. Could be the greatest up and coming driver of the world but you may not make it because of money. with me i started at 10 and pretty good now. I think i have to move up in 2012 to make it to professional racing. you can race anything like karts, stock cars, but professional racing cost money and huge amount of dedication. Only thing i think about all day is racing.

when u guys say money how much we talking about and were do you spend it cars? or? I love to race but unfortunately my time has passed ( am 27) but i want my son to begin when he is old enough and of course if he likes it( hes 2 years now). So i just wanted to get an idea of were to start. Another thing is i am based in the US and i know the racing is in the UK so that will be something to plan for.

Kris, I am also passionate about racing. I know I am not fit to race professionally but will support my son ( 3 now) as he loves racing games. Getting it to the top end in motorsport is complete dedication. Life stops for the parent until the child succeeds.

As you have a few years until he's old enough to start Karting then it shouldn't be too expensive to get him started. If he starts young and is good then financial backing would aid his career. I'm not sure how well supported Karting is in the US compared to Europe. My son is 6 and he's interested in trying in the next year once we can afford a Kart etc. My friends son has started at a karting School at the age of 7 and he doesn't have a Kart of his own yet, but once he's ready to race then it shouldn't be very expensive, especially if you or a friend/family member is capable of maintaining the Kart. Just travel costs, entry fee's and some maintenance of the Kart will be your initial costs. If he's good enough then sponsorship will come his way and that will help towards progressing into cars.

And i am totally willing on it if he likes it, am just a little worried about how much money is needed to spend and were

Just for examples of things i've been looking into, your first seasons always more expensive as you need to buy the car, get the race license (in certain series):

Karting season: Can cost anywhere from £1000 to £10,000 for a season depending on the series.
Formula Ford: £8,000 - 15,000 for a season
Formula Renault: Its more than Formula Ford but can't remember the price
F2: Not that I've looked into this but I seem to remember them saying it was about 100,000 euros for the season?
F1: Pedro De La Rosa for example looks set to pay between 8 and 10 million euros for the HRT seat in 2011.

The Junior years in karting from 4-12 are the cheapest.
But 13-15 when the kid should be driving in KF3 (karting class) it is there the costs accelerate.
You'd need to drive racing series in Italy and win a huge amount and find finances to Formula Renault or Formula 3.
It will be tough, but if you're up to it as well as your kid and the rest of your family I say go ;)

I don't think its ever too late to join a racing series and get to say Formula ford or Jedi or similar, I know a 40 year old in Jedi's, but its to make a career out of racing you need to start young.

This weekend at Barbagallo Raceway in Perth, there will be the AAC Festival of Speed. It's going to be a day-long event, with race cars from all eras on track and on display, as well as Mark Webber being there to demonstrate his F1 car and tackle the existing lap record of Perth's little racetrack. I've gotten a ticket with a Paddock Pass, and will be catching the train there on the day. I'll be armed with a camera, and will post pictures of my day at the track!

Watch this space... :)

While five-time American Le Mans Series' champion Joerg Bergmeister joined the press launch of the all-new 2011 Porsche Carrera GTS in Palm Springs, California, he took the chance to take his first test drive in the new car. Here he compares the new 408 hp GTS model to his own 911 Carrera S - and to his Flying Lizard 911 GT3 RSR car.

Are there any televised standard production car races?

Been watching The Great Race 1960-1966 again (
). They raced standard cars, that you can just walk into a dealership and buy, with 50kg seats, lighters, standard tires, engines, gearboxes... the whole shebang. No rollcages or anything, but it was the 60s.

Anyway, is there anything like that today? I'm sure there's plenty, but is there anything big enough that can found somewhere on the Interwebz?

Cheers
