Old Skin Thread (merged)

Hi guys,

as you may know, the new season of the Racedepartment Touring Car Championship is coming up soon. The series will feature either 75 or 100 drivers, therefore there will be lots of skin requests. Especially because the league has mandatory logos and everyone has to use a skin.

Right now the skin request system is handled in an "anarchistic" way, people ask for skins in the league forum, in the skin forum or via PM. Usually it works but there are also cases where more people make skins for one driver, like it has happened with the Riccardo Umans skin in RDGTC. Then you have nice skins unused, a lot of work for nothing and this only because of a communication mistake. That's what I try to avoid. And also, when there is a small post somewhere, many skinners just don't notice it.

My idea was to implement a list of skinners in the first post of the skinning thread. The list is written in that way that it fits into the "participants" line of the conversation system. So when you want to request a skin, you just write a pm to all the skinners. This way you will informed quickly, can discuss it internally with the driver and every other skinner and you can avoid double work. And new drivers know who to contact. If you have no time for one more request, it's no problem, someone else will do it. And if there is a skin that you can make really fast (for example if someone requests a Martini Alfa that I have already painted), you can answer and inform all other skinners.

If you are making skins: Please contact me via PM so you can be a part of this. There will be more information.

If you are a driver looking for a skin: Stay tuned! Many things will happen when the entry list is decided.

Greets,
Robert (This time in my official position as the skin pack coordinator :D )

Ok Marcel, here is the important message for you to complete my skin!

We have a logo pack, and it's already ready, but we are still waiting for the final entry list for the release.

It will contain:
Racedepartment logo for windscreen banner
Numberplates for both sides and roof - this time you have to register a number first, so we don't have lots of #27 and #42 cars :p
rSeat license plate for front and back
Eric Plimmer memorial black ribbon - it would be a nice gesture to put it on the car to remember Eric. You can choose size and position freely.

You can of course start to make your skins, better to leave some spaces free. And if you want to help other drivers too, check this: http://www.racedepartment.com/forum/threads/rdtcc-season-8-skin-requests.44917/#post-1007875

Hi Andrew,
Ive just been veiwing it in Race. Only takes a minute or so to load up a replay. If you need any help with this just PM me and i will run you through it on Team Speak.
It would be handy to know if there is a 3D view programme out there to use though.....Anybody???

There are several software suites that are capable of this (3DSMax, Maya and other open source programs) but you'll need additional files in order to see the models in 3D. Luckily there are many rendering scenes available for download, I myself am working with 3DSMax and once you've got it setup correctly it is waaay easier than booting up the game constantly. The only time I go ingame is to race with my new skins. I added an example of a rendered STCC2 car.

If anyone wants to learn more feel free to send me a pm.
Cheers.

THANX MARCEL

Thanks for the info but I allready talked to the people behind the RDTCC :) Lots of cool things coming this season. I am also on the list for skin requests so I am following all developments. In the mean time it is a waiting game for the final driver entries; once that is known I will dissappear into my paint shed :)
To make communicating a bit easier maybe you can send a pm next time. I get e-mail notifications of those so I don't have to worry about missing a reply on a thread somewhere...too busy skinning to browse the forums :)

Cheers

To me this sounds as an alpha layer problem. Alpha layers control transparency with textured objects. An alpha layer is basicly a greyscale representation of the windows texture. Items that are white are opaque and items that are black are transparent. (also counts for all the gray values in between). An alpha layer exists next to the common RGB channels of an image.
Now, here's the error you're making. Changing the opacity of the RGB (your standard colors) layer of an image does not have any affect on transparency of an object. It only controls the amount of texture that is seen.
Also make sure you save the windows.dds correctly (dxt5, interpolated alpha plus mipmaps).
Let me know if I can be of any further assistence...

Thanks Marcel, I guessed it may have had something to do with an alpha layer, I'm just not that clued up with skinning so couldn't find anything myself. I'll have another look and see if I can fix it - I've seen loads of other Cruze skins that have windows that are fine so it's probably a really simple thing I've missed!

Saved the .dds correctly so it's not that, but thanks anyway!

Everytime I paint a car with front 1 colour and the boot another I always get A coloured Square that is a shade different to the front ?

Is it my Template of the Alpha or am i missing something?

Any help would be greatful.
Thanx Andy

Ok so I have thrown in the towel in my attempt to work out what I'm doing wrong with the windows on the Cruze, so if someone knowledgeable in the ways of skinning could do it for me I'd be very grateful!

Basically all I need is my name and number on the side-rear and rear windows with a GB flag next to the name, and the Race Department logo across the top of the front window.

I have all the logos files etc so if anyone can do this for me I'll send you them and will be eternally grateful!

Also if I could have the file in both .dds form and .psd as well so I can edit the number should I not get the number I want for the RDTCC!

Thanks,

Nik
