Michael Schumacher

The Mercedes definitely will have the know how to make a proper car again after the 2010 failure. It will be interesting to see if they have listened to MS and adjusted the car to his needs.

I hope he does well but I think he is only there to help develop the car. Rosberg is a good racer but I'm not so sure he's good at developing the car and giving feedback to the engineer's. Schumacher has a computer like brain and mechanics have recalled how after many laps testing he could tell them what he and the car were doing at a given corner and give input into how it could be improved. I believe he is there to develop the car and keep the seat warm for Vettel but it would be fun to see him challenge at the top end of the championship if not to shut up the bitter old man Eddie Jordan who does all he can to run him down each race, not that I'm suggesting he is bitter losing a young Schumacher to Benetton of course.

Well he only returned to the sport and was rusty. The car wasn't really the problem as Rosberg showed during the season. Now the Schumacher has had the season to get to grips with Formula one again I'm sure he will improve!

From Sky Sports:

Michael Schumacher has hinted he could retire from F1 for a second time after admitting he no longer has the same hunger for the sport.

The 42-year-old German returned to the starting grid with Mercedes last year after three years away from the sport. However, the seven time world champion has failed to impress since making his comeback and is regularly upstaged by team-mate Nico Rosberg.

"I arrived at Mercedes with a specific task: not winning at all costs but to grow the team," Schumacher told Italian newspaper the Corriere dello Sport.

"If anything, I am the problem: it is a fact that I am a bit more relaxed than before and I do not know if my mind-set is right for this team. "I have experience, I can estimate when it is necessary to concentrate. But I do not know if my mind-set is right for the team, in some time we will evaluate whether to continue or stop in F1."

This is so similar to Michael Jordan coming back to basketball only to realise he wasn't the same passionate player. Schumacher is no different. His time has come and gone. He had many chances to impress but they were short because of a combination of bad luck, mechanical error, and many other factors.

I think it's more a case of no in-season testing, no traction control and V10 power

I could understand in-season testing, and sort of understand no traction control, but correct me if I am wrong but did he not win a championship without traction control a number of times? I don't understand the V10 because Schumacher almost won the title in '06 but reliability in the last two races spoiled it. Educate me.

I may be mistaken with the V10 comment, I just associate it with the 'Schumacher era' of dominance.
With traction control, it's pretty obvious in retrospect that Bennetton had traction control on their car in 1994 even though it had been outlawed, this played a huge part in Schumacher's first WDC.
Then obviously with Ferrari's huge capacity to test in-season, Schumacher had a team and car built around him year-on-year which he doesn't have any more. He's merely another driver.
