This is Lada-history! Frigging frustrating that there's a huuuuuuuge McKlein-mark on many pics
To add a bit more to the guy. He was indirectly the reason why rally got banned in Norway.
So, back in 1970, Per Engseth was driving a VW Beetle. On a TV-broadcasted stage (!) they had moved the finish-line 300m, which made the stage 300m shorter, all to get better TV-pictures. However. The drivers were never informed. While the TV-cameras didn't follow the cars after the finish line, Engseth didn't realize the finish had been moved and with the very short braking-area after the finish, he was unable to stop the car and went off, hitting a spectator-car. The car he hit was actually the first ever Honda imported to Norway.
While the TV-cameras didn't catch the incident, the newspapers did, and a tabloid-paper blew it up the next day "The pictures TV never showed!". That caused a committee to be formed who would look at this, they were quite positive in regards to rally, and never thought it should be banned. However, the minister of Transport at the time was of the opinion that if rallies were to be held in Norway there had to be guards every 50m of the stages. Which was basically a ban.
It would take 10 or so years before the next rally would be held i Norway, it was held inside a military field in Elverum (My and Per Engseth's hometown). But the first proper rally wouldn't be held until 1984! However, there were some "test-rallies" from 82 and up until 84.
This is also the reason why Rallycross got so big in Norway, many rally-drivers moved to RX.
EDIT: I'll have to contact his cousin (which incidentally is my mom's old boyfriend - small town, eh?) and ask him if he has any pictures as well.
