Is VR dead?

Tracking has improved quite a bit and it works in a nearly dark room now.

Sounds like MR features are still a work in progress.
Said it was painful to wear and the battery life is very short, but just buy the premium strap to help fix that.

Like always a VR-headset is a very personal experience.

I'm not expecting the Quest 3 to be perfect, far from it. But i do think it's the better headset compared to the Reverb G2 because it should have better edge to edge clarity. But if the comfort sucks, it's going back unless i can improve it myself. If i like the Q3, i will be ordering a deluxe headstrap for sure.

The problem is that the Crystal, Aero and BSB are all still compromises on one front or an other, but the prices are sky high. I don't mind spending a couple thousand on a new VR-headset, but it should be one with a decent (Index) FoV and good edge to edge clarity.

Maybe the Somnium VR1 next year. I'm kind of giving up hope Valve will ever announce an Index 2.

I'm trying to postpone buying a high-end VR headset until something actually comes along that will satisfy me for a longer period.

VR-racing is expensive, but cheap compared to real stuf. So i have to make some though decisions.

A Quest 3 costs less than one track day. The Aero is about the price of 4 good semi slicks and i spend an Aero on new shocks and a BSB on the roll cage.
I am in the same boat. I am happy to wait until there is something better than the current bsb/aero/crystal offerings.

The thing for me is that i can sit inside my g2 and be picky about mostly the edge to edge clarity, the rest is ok for me. What makes me happy to hold off is that if I stop looking at the image to see the issues they all fade in to oblivion when I am in the car practising or racing. None of that is obvious to me when I am using it for what I have got it for. Flight sims is a different story, that edge to edge is more an issue there but i am less a flight simmer these days than i am a racer.

So it becomes a nice to have, no performance improvement and probably no real difference to how i feel when i am in the thick of it so I am happy that lets me hold off until I am more happy about new ones.

I like the part when he says that putting on a hat under the quest makes him feel weird :roflmao:

He's been wearing a mask for privacy well before Covid. Now of course it's political.

Past that, gen Z definitely express themselves differently than many of us Gen X'ers and older Millennials. There is no getting around that. On top of that he's into VR Chat which is yet another area foreign to most of us.

I agree that it never makes sense to spend money on equipment until you are itchy and feel a need. This is even more so with something that has a short lifespan.

I also agree that none of the current offerings are an end game headset.

This was a huge year in terms of new headset releases and announcements, but before this was a lull. Other than the ongoing Valve mystery headset(if that actually happens), it's very possible that 2024 will be a quiet year for new announcements in this space. We already know about the VR1 and it is another iteration in the enthusiast headset market with more features at what will likely be a premium cost, and I'm sure it will have some bragging rights.

So if you are happy with what you have and not tempted by anything new, you may have a while to be content with your G2 before anything major comes out that tempts you.

So I say that and then someone shows me yet another rumor of coming attractions. Notice the last one with 3850x3840 and DP connection with a rumored price is over $1,000.

20 seconds into video....
Yeah dude, I want to buy a VR headset with the sexiest box, ALWAYS an important factor to consider.

VR is however starting to get really good but just when few developers are much interested in developing for it.

I think the big screen is a very nice vr headset and I would like to preorder it if my country was in the shipping list but I think 1K dollar is to much expensive for what it’s offering and to use it you have buy at least one base station and 2 controllers and an audio headset… so you have to add at least 600$!! Nice resolution, standard FOV if not below the standard ( all the new headsets have more than 102 of H FOV), standard pancake lenses, No inside outside tracking, no eyes tracking, no audio solution.
This thing should cost max 600$.

If it were miniLED that might be possible. Currently the microOLED pricing is pretty steep. You are paying for a first gen product.

Yeah makes a lot less sense for anyone outside the SteamVR ecosystem though the cost really does reflect build cost. The screens alone are like $200 apiece iirc

This guy seems to be impressed with a RTX 3080 at least in Iracing.

He also talked about the comfort which isn't the best. I already ordered the deluxe headstrap from amazon to, just in case i do like the quest 3 i can start modding it right away.

If a better VR-head is released, the Quest 3 might be nice to keep to play some mixed reality games.

I'm still looking at the Bigscreen beyond, but that headset with the deluxe headstrap wil go well over the € 1500,- here in Europe. That on it self is not an issue, but with the higher resolution a RTX4090 is also needed. The RTX 4090 will probably not be enough for the next generation of VR headset......

If possible my "final" VR-headset is hopefully one that uses light house tracking.

Peculiar synergy? Quest 3 + ACC + AMD 6900 XT (Jason Storm first impressions)
"notoriously bad for VR" .. "normally VR is an absolute mess in this game"
"on the Quest 2 was practically unusable"
"this is nearly better than my triple screens" .. "I haven't messed with any settings"
"just the best VR headset I have ever used in this game"
"I think I found my new sim racing headset"
"This is PC VR with the original Oculus Link cable, the fiber optic one"
"I'm not using FSR" .. "frame rate's fine" ... "It's chewing batteries" (about 40% in 30 minutes)
Virtual Desktop: "still pretty good" ... power bank with 3A output maintains Quest 3 during VD.

On the forums i read that a lot of people are replacing their G2 with the Quest 3.

Better edge to edge clarity, bigger FOV and better colors are main advantages of the Quest 3 compared to the G2. Most of the stuff i had issues with when i tried the G2

Virtual Desktop seem to be the go to app and even has OpenXR support already

Here's another review/comparison he prefers the Quest 3 over the G2, but is also very fond of the Pico 4. So I'm already looking ahead to the Pico 5 next year :)

I am pretty excited, but i still have to wait a couple of days for the Quest 3 to arrive. I ordered mine from amazon as a taxfree order and with a gift coupon i'm at € 420,- (deluxe head strap included) A few months ago we installed a Wifi 6 router about 1m (3feet) from my rig.

My gut tells me, this could be the one to replace the Index until something better comes along.

Let's just hope it fits my face and the comfort is tolerable.

Good Luck !!!

It's always a great day when something that is mass produced with economies of scale can take care of your needs. Fingers crossed you are happy with it when it arrives. It should at least be a step up from the Index in terms of resolution. There may still be a bit of SDE, but hopefully not enough to bother you.

Can’t wait to your review. May I join the Quest3 party until high end headset is released ( Vr1). I hate my G2 reverb with its tiny sweet spot and its fresnel lenses .
