Is VR dead after all?
Not in a fantasy world. :roflmao:

They now have a new ai package that uses a text plus paint brush inputs to generate a fantasy world. Currently it's just a 360 degree image, but it's just as creative as midjourney filling in highly detailed cities or landscapes, etc.

This is pretty exciting. Imagine an AI dynamically generated virtual world that extends as you go through it. World building would be in a completely new realm.

There was also the case when AI convinced some poor soul to commit suicide.

There was also the case when AI convinced some poor soul to commit suicide.

AI is a tool and people will use it for good and evil.
AI is also growing in ability quickly and they are trying to install safe guards as fast as they can.

I had someone arguing that AI had no conscious and might recommend something unethical. The example he used was that a new cure that could save many people would require a child to be infected and die for a cure to be synthesized and that an AI would have no problem recommending this.

My take is that if history is any indication, big pharmaceutical companies wouldn't need an AI to push them to do this. They would try to take care of things in some 3rd world country and cover it up and then make their profits.

AI is a mixed bag. It could be a great thing for us and/or it could be something horrible. Likely there will be some mix of things that scare us and possibly hurt people and things that improve our lives dramatically and save many lives. I can't guess at the "overall" outcome, but there will always be winners and losers with any new disruptive technology.

The thing i dislike most about ai is that the world has finally moved on from people posting everything the had to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The world seems better not being confronted by food selfies all the time.

Just when you start to relax the internet bombards you with ai selfies - progress.
I'm watching some of the things people are coming up with and so far it's been interesting because it is all over the map. There is beauty, humor, weirdness, and also disturbing and revolting images.

Here are just a few from beautiful to bizzare(not mine), but keep in mind that there are thousands and thousands of new images being created 24x7.

One person's synopsis of the current state of Crystal's being delivered.

To sum it up:
  1. Glass or plastic lenses lottery
  2. Fiber optic cable lottery
  3. Packaging damage lottery
  4. Device detected / not detected lottery
  5. Batteries and cable requiring superhuman force to plug/unplug
Early adopters need to be prepared to deal with teething pains and typical Pimax quality control.

There are numerous software issues as well and the fact that while they "claimed" they had the eye tracking working and would have the auto IPD adjustment completed in May, neither of these features are currently working with shipped units. So continued feature back sliding, but they are shipping the product anyway.

I am on the same discord that you are on, I am seeing the same things that you are and tbh, it doesnt seem like you are being fair on all the points. 1. Glass or plastic lens lottery. Has anyone got plastic? You read someone thought they had plastic it turned out they had glass.. Did anyone actually get plastic?

Fibre optic... No one got less than they were promised. Some (edit _one_ not some) had damage on delivery, happens to any one but it is unfortunate. Device detected lottery... one guy, he fixed it. batteries hard to plug in?
You are reporting on but not following up with results. In this case you are reporting things after you know the final results..

I am having a lot of fun in WMR with my Intel ARC A770 and HP Reverb.
Open Composite and WMR toolkit is a massive enhancer as well.
I had sold my GTX1080Ti slightly before the headset arrived, in anticipation of getting an RTX3080.
We all know how that went.
I had played around a few times with the GTX1060-6GB and while it was not horrible, the ARC card has significantly better frames.
The clarity is insanely.
I've used the headset more in the last three days than at any other time previous.
VR is far from dead for me anyway.

Fair enough. You are correct that I'm not reading everything to get full context for a bullet list like that and it's not fair for me to do that.

But you have to admit there is a bunch of angst there. I'm reading through the latest and it seems that support after the sale is definitely what I would expect from them.

Edit: Actually the list of issues seems to be getting longer with more anst. Already saw one guy saying he was sending it back for a refund.

That said, I can't imagine anyone expecting things to go any differently for a Pimax release. People should have known what they were getting into. I'm also sure that a lot of this is typical knee jerk reactions by people who were impatient to get one and are also impatient to get it working.

I assume that over the coming months the situation will improve.

Like that 4 display 240H FOV :) I saw the drawings showed 37-41 ppd for the main lenses and less for the side lenses, and the fact that they just want to license their tech to another VR headset producer sound great! Varjo has proven that rendering for 4 displays is already possible, so this is doable.

The VR1 looks pretty cool as well with much better horizontal FOV than anything with that resolution. 2880 horizontal pixels. Not sure how this modular approach will work. I think we would all love a modular VR headset in terms of upgradability.

The Quest 3 looks smaller, the apple mixed reality headset looks smaller still. Neither is quite as small as the BSB, but loving this trend towards smaller headsets :)

102V by 128H as he measured it wearing the headset, 35ppd, IPD adjustments 60-76mm, 90,120, 144Hz coming, 210 nits with local dimming, eye tracking

650g-850g depending on if you have pass through cameras and hand tracking
6m cord, comes in smaller lengths.

They will be producing them completely in the Czech Republic, but will be open source. Has multiple anchor points for 3D printed things.

Expect to be shipping this year. He says that will should be pretty happy when we see the price. That's an interesting thing to say given the prices of recent headsets.

I was super hyped for the Aero. But once it came out it and I received it I found out that it had edge distortion, red shift, motion blur, massive chromatic aberration, terrible stereo overlap, almost unusable vertical fov and other issues(I even had a dead pixel). All things that you cannot see on forehand. So I'm not hyped for anything unproven/on paper anymore because of that experience. And even a worse experience with Arpara: oled panels 2560px Res, pancake lenses, affordable sounded like a dream hmd. I ALMOST bought it as a pre-order. But it was the biggest disappointment in vr history, in reality the colors and nits were so far off that it wasn't even usable so they didn't ship the HMD yet to the people that pre-ordered it years ago.

Tomorrow my Crystal arrives, I'm excited to receive it and I hope the best of it. But hyped, no; I'm concerned about the performance and if it lives up to the expectations. But despite what you think about Pimax (and I share all those negative thoughts), it's currently a more established company then Somnium, I expect that their first product will be in a even more beta/alpha stage then the negative aspects of Pimax and Varjo combined. So I'm not excited for that product at all. The Quest 3 seems to be a mediocre product too for sim racers, the only hope that's left besides the Pimax Crystal are unannounced headsets like the Index 2 and maybe an HTC vive 3 and maybe Samsung will come up with something new. Of course I wish Somnium the best but after Arpara and my experience with Varjo I will just wait and see how it really is. Those specifications say not much to me for that reason.

I'm not pre-ordering a BSB, VR1, or anything without a track record until I see how others feel about them after they have been in production for a little while. A new Valve product is about the only thing that I could see myself pre-ordering because they have earned my trust.

Good luck with your new Crystal! I really do hope you get a winner, or stick it out until it does work well.

I'm currently happy enough with my Aero, despite the compromises to hold on for something that is better in many ways. The VR1 "looks" like an Index 2 type of product, however, I have a feeling the next Index while not modular and upgradable will be something a bit better.

Open source products from the Czech Republic and specifically Prague include my Prusa Printer that I love. My Jeti RC Transmitter is also from the Czech Republic and specifically Prague. I pre-ordered my DS-16 when they first opened up the website for them. It has been as perfect a transmitter as I could ever hope for. It is also highly customizable and I've moved and replaced switchgear etc.. So while I won't pre-order, I actually give Somnium a much higher chance of delivering a complete product that works reliably than many others. I've never gotten a bad product from the Czech Republic. All of my favorite RC helicopters came from Germany and there is more of a perfectionist mindset there.

Time will tell. I'm only guessing based on generalizations of my past experiences.
