Is VR dead?

If you don't have something to look forward to, what do you have? :)

My G2 is still very nice but I can't wait for the next real leap, which given I like the resolution of the G2 will be clearer glass across the fov and a wider FOV..

The one thing I can very much wait for is what its going to cost me.

Somehow it's always the next year that is The Year of VR.
Moving like a mirage or horizon line.
Sort of like how fusion is always 20 years away...

I was disappointed that "High on Life" was not done in VR because it looks like a lot of fun.

What is telling to me is that Rick and Morty had a VR game and then there was Trover Saves the Universe, but when Squanch made High on Life there was no VR support :(

Things changed since then, now businesses think twice before investing in VR.

With my secondhand 3090 I'm running my Reverb G2 at 100% res with enough performance to spare that I don't have to fiddle with settings in AC anymore. VR is awesome, right here right now.
Yes now in 2022/2023; VR is better then ever for sim racers! Never been so affordable, the 3080+G2 with discounts are affordable for many now and give a great experience in AC(and after lots of tweaking pretty good in AMS2/RR/RF2 too). And the VR software has never been so good since openxr toolkit is available, the best solution for all WMR issues that I experienced before.

And for real enthusiasts it's even possible to get all sims running running at maxed settings by buying the 4090, even ACC in Epic is possible and all other sims including DR2 could be run maxed out at 120 native resolution. It looks and runs like a dream. So yes better then ever for sure. But I'm still looking forward to higher resolution and non glare/huge sweetspot HMD's, I have some hope that the Pimax Crystal will offer this after all that I've seen about it.

Well the Pico is meh. If you just want to do VR on a budget get an old Lenovo Explorer for less than £100. I guess it's 'better' than the Lenovo on paper but it's not a massive difference in visual quality I was expecting. Should have put the money towards that DD wheel instead.

Which Pico though? Neo 4 or Neo 3 Link?

The 4. Tbh it's my own fault for not reading up about it a bit more. Letting SteamVR just sort out the settings in auto I've dropped down from over 90fps in AC to 72 most of the time which is annoying given I can't really see much payoff in clarity. Probably going to stick the Explorer back on. I'm going to try virtul desktop instead of the Pico software but I can see myself selling it ASAP or doing a return and pretending it's broken.

The big problem with the Pico 4 is that its compressed and this works in a lot of games without much visual problems but in racing games its really obvious and the compression does a terrible job. The Pico 3 link has very similar qualities in practice to the 4 with the Link cable but its such a terrible software environment that its got a lot of bugs and they haven't issued any fixes since April, the product is effectively abandoned already and was just 6 weeks after its launch. So while the Pico 3 Link if fixed would be the better sim racing headset since the Fresnel lenses are really good clarity wise they have a nice big sweet spot the headset has way too many problems with its image and sound. The Pico 4 has some similar issues too but its a bunch of fixes on. I don't think either is a good choice for sim racing or PCVR.

I bought the Pico 4 for traditional VR-titles and even upgraded to a Samsung G9 for sim-racing later. The comfort on my head and clarity is great, but you need a RTX 4080, better 4090 with matching PC and router to use it for sim-racing. I've only played games like HL-Alyx and The Walking Dead with Virtual Desktop and the Pico 4 is by far the best headset ever for me including tracking (after CV1, Samsung Odyssey, Vive Cosmos), but sim-racing need much more power even tethered. I've never tried it without VD, but seems like a must anyway.

Why do you need Virtual desktop to play VR games, is it Pico specific as typically you use VR Desktop to play 2D games in Virtual Theater mode.

This is not the same VD as the one from Steam store. This version is for Quest and Pico headsets and it can stream via wifi and people say it works better than the native airlink app, especially for Pico

A properly tethered Pico 4 would have been such a great option for sim racing. Can't help feeling Pico missed a trick here, although they probably need those app sales to offset losses on the hardware.

I have trapped myself with the technology upgrade....now I need up get a Wifi 6 router and a new graphics card.....

Don't get me wrong, you can see the resolution increase and FOV is a better but my 3060ti isn't going to cut it. To console myself I've been using it watch an unaltertered version of Star Wars in a virtual cinema, which the headset seems to do quite impressively.

The native games are also pretty good. I guess I will just have to get that 4080 or similar next year. I've got a motorbike to fix and a new car to buy so I'm not rushing into it.

This new VR headset aims to change the restrictive politics in the virtual reality market in general, which was established by big corporate and centralized entities.

A quick Q without trying to find the answer in the thread (which may now anyways be out of date) With a 4090 & 13900KF combo - Do I go for a 8k PIMAX for a Reverb G2?

Thanks!
