Ok, I bowed into te hype & phenomenon of iRacing and have signed up on the $25 for 3 months offer.

First major gripe though - how slow are the damn downloads. Sheesh, I've been down as low as 35kB/s. What the hell is that? That is reason enough for me to not want to renew it tbh. You'd think the amount people pay for this they could get a reasonably good server and offer at LEAST 200kB/s (ie like a normal website).

Unfortunately it doesn't tell me how much time has elapsed but 'm exactly 75% of the way and I still have 57 mins left, only 150 MB though!!!

Not a good start! It better be good just for the wait.

Yea well it just dipped down to 33kB/s. Wtf? I'm really not impressed at all.

Dear Lord relax man, instead of ranting just ask if others have this issue,i guarantee you they dont.
I suggest you speak to your isp,
This is NOT iracings fault,
I reinstalled windows 2 days ago and redownloaded iracing and all the content i purchased @330kbps on a 3 mb connection which is bang on what i expect from 3 mb line.

I have to say ive never seen anyone complain about the download speeds.

Rubbish. It has nothing to do with my ISP at all. I have ADSL2+ connection and though it does seem a little slow tonight, I just tested it at Speedtest.net and this was the result.

I installed GTR Evolution and Evo from Steam at a constant rate of 1MB/S. This is what I expected from iRacing, which is far more expensive.

The iRacing download is handled by Akamai. Which chooses the closest datacenter to download from, it is a possibility that your nearest is having issues, which is resulting in slow speed or alternatively has chosen a further datacenter which has poor connections to the Oceanic region.

You can blame what you like but there is nothing wrong with iracings download speeds.
You say your connection is fine, its obviously something in between you both.

Harping on about expecting this and that from iracing is wrong simply because there is no fault with their download speeds :)

Basically if you want to compete in every race in the series you have to buy every track.
I personally only bought a track when I needed it, I never went out and bought a complete season of tracks, spending that sort of cash in one go was not an option for me, (the missus would kill me!)
I spent £20 here and there and now I have quite a few oval tracks but far from all of them. I was spending £20 a week quite frequently.

Still iR has some great starter content that will keep you busy for the first 2-3 months maybe. Just watch out, It can suck you in and the next min you have spent £200 on it

I have personally spent around £150 or more on content not including my subscription (i dont want to add it up for my own sanity!)

Well that's the thing as well, I just don't really have the time to be racing all the time. I would say I probably get between 5-15 hours a week to play any type of game. I can see purchasing things when you need them though, as that is what I would do as well.

I just don't know if it's worth it for the amount of time I play. But at least I have either a free month or a cheap 3 months to figure it out.

This is iRacing's biggest problem for me anyway.

I started my months trial on the day the game went public to invites only last year which was 2 months before it went on sale to the general public.

I also bought the Skip Barber to practice with if I got a high enough rating at the end of the month to run it.

Unfortunately I realised that I was not getting enough time with the game to get value for money with a subscription service. I was enjoying the game a lot, but with a family to feed and barely enough money to keep the bills paid I had to end my service at the end of my first month.

I've always hoped that once I have more time and money I would be able to return to it. Now though with so much content available all of which has to be purchased piece by piece I don't see me ever getting back into it. Though I know I'd only need the content for what ever season is running at the time, the next season would bring more expense and content needed to compete. If I'd of been able to stay originally then maybe I could of kept up by sticking to one discipline, which for me would of been road racing (though I'd had more success and better rating on ovals).

I know you get credits to spend as you purchase more, but for me at the moment this is far too much still.:dont-know:

It's a real pity for me and any people on a budget to get into iRacing now that it has expanded so much as I would love to get back into it if I could:starving:.

Hopefully one day they will come up with a financially viable solution for the rest of us.

I see what you're saying Philip. I can see why they say it's affordable when talking about actual racing practice. If you were to actually buy a car, go out to a race track, and pay for a day to race, it is really expensive. Unfortunately for a lot of "sim racers" or basically ones who race for fun on their computers, this is a lot of money! Even MMO games like World of Warcraft only charge $15-20 a month, and that's it. Everything else in the game is paid for, at least for the most part.

I think the thing for me is, I bought GTR Evolution for $17 shipped to Mexico. I bought RFactor the special edition with the extra F1 cars for 12 pounds shipped to Mexico. That is a LOT of content for so little. Anyways, I am still interested in Iracing, I have to figure out if I want a month or 3 months to try out, but I really don't think I'm willing to sink around $2000 pesos into it just for a couple months. In the realm of video games/sim racing, it is still ridiculously expensive, and I think that's what is holding back some of us, if not most. But I'm sure it's been talked about ad nauseum in this thread.
