Totally agree with you about the A.I. I think people are used to the F1 or Forza or GT A.I. who are docile and mindless. THESE guys seems to hold a grudge, like a real driver would. And they are not afraid to get in there with you, whether that means bumping you off your line, leaning on you in the corner, or tagging you hard after you have tagged them. It reminds me of how they drive on Top Gear...lol. And, of course, how most of us in the U.S. think racing should be like. I'm not necessarily one of them, but maybe gamers are used to an F1 mentality, that being the most popular type of racing worldwide? I'm just speculating, but I too had a go at a 14 lapper last night on "very hard" level....
The start was pretty hectic with me having qualified **** last, due to some bad luck in a corner. (Previous attempts usually put me around 9th or 10th, not much better.) So I had a pretty good start, nudging my way up to 9th or so, and the action was pretty clean, but I did "accidentally" use this one silver MINI to get through a corner. Instead of hitting the wall I hit him, because, as we all know, contact with other cars results in no damage, but contact with the walls equals damage. I was gaining on the field, but the silver MINI was staying with me, annoying me in my mirror. Then it was payback time. I broke a little early going into a corner trying to pass another MINI, and the silver MINI tagged me in the rear spinning me into the grass. When I backed up on to the track, I hit my teammate! lol. But fortunately the silver MINI was blocked by the carnage too. For the next 10 laps or so, it was just a very slow process of overtaking about 2 cars. One was quick, but I too got the gearbox issue (gear 5 too) about midway through. I though I had just damaged my gearbox, so 5th or 6th was slower, but when I looked at the gears, 5th way missing entirely! Despite this, I managed to creep up on another car and finish 9th or so. My best lap way around a 2:10 I think.
I also ran some test qualifying laps in a "tuned" MINI vs. a "non-tuned" MINI, but found there was virtually no difference in lap times. It probably takes a better driver to notice the difference, but I'll try it again with your settings Mathew and see how I come out. Mine have been pretty much the opposite. In the end, maybe the tuning will help some and not others. But in reality, the lack of 5th gear probably hurt me more than not being able to tune it. I have no idea why that would happen Peter. It never happened on other games. I do know that gamers (myself included) tend to over-rev cars, thinking the higher the sound the more power thy are getting, but real cars, when racing, actually don't take too kindly to hitting the red line over and over again like we are used to. I suspect that F1 cars can take it (not this years dumbed down version, but in years past) so people got used to it, but your average sedan is not suited for that. It would be interesting to see if the same thing happens in a race prepared car. I don't recall it happening. But these MINI's are supposed to be basically stock, so it does make a bit of sense.
Here are my laps with the tuned vs. untuned MINI:
Untuned: (2:09.344)
Tuned: (2:10.176)
If anyone is available to run a practice race tonight, that would be very helpful. I don't go to work until 5pm so anytime before 4pm EDT would be ideal. Thanks.
