Pre-Race
Valencia is my best track, and I was confident I could get a great result here. I'd practiced lots and my times seemed to stack up with anyone else's I could find. I'd completed over 300 laps of testing, including 7 full races to judge fuel load (both in sunny and overcast conditions to learn every corner) and overall race pace. My best quali timers were in the 1.37's on options, 1.39's on primes, and my typical fastest laps on primes was in the 1.41's (lap 20ish) and 1.39's on options (lap 24ish). I'd even run 2 full races in the wet. I was prepared!
Quali:
I decided to go for primes, as my plan was to fuel manage near the start of the race where I might be held up anyway. Out lap was very slow as I wanted to make sure I didn't hit traffic. Must have taken about 2 minutes to get around. Hit full speed from the last corner, and 2/3rds of the way around hit traffic that ruined my lap time. Next lap more traffic. I came back into the pits for fresh tyres and set out again. This time I had a good gap, and although I could see a car ahead it was a pretty long way and I shouldn't catch it before the end. This lap was running perfectly, and I was nearly 2s up on my previous best as I hit the split time of the hairpin. That made it even more ironic when I rounded it to see Christian's car looking right back at me!
Sadly I could not stop in time, and so to add insult to injury not only was that lap gone, but I also received a 5 place grid penalty. I knew I needed a good lap time now so just had to gun it, but I was not able to put a really good lap together. I had qualified 4th, which I would have settled for, but the penalty put me back to 9th. Oh well, I thought, nothing is decided on the Saturday, and it should be interesting with so many cars ahead of me!
The Race:
Got a good start, but had to ease off to snake around misoch, who had seemingly stalled?! Was on the outside which I preferred, and everything seemed to be working cleanly into turn 2. As I rounded the corner I couldn't put on the power right away like normal because Toto was right ahead of me. Then I felt a shunt from behind which pushed me into Toto. I eased off completely until Toto had got himself free, and started to put the power down. The back end then felt like it was stepping out with the car trying to snake I thought. Odd because I hadn't slammed down the accelerator and was pointing in a straight line, so I eased off the throttle completely. Then the steering went light and I started to accelerate forward. I had no idea what was going on and then the back end just stepped out violently and slammed me into the wall, putting my front wing red.
I had to ease the car back to the pits for a new front nose. Knowing any chance of having any fun at all in this race was slipping I switched my tactics to option tyres and took a gamble by putting the engine mapping up. I knew the chance of a good result was now gone, so I had nothing to lose from the gamble. I came out 49s behind the leader and started to gun it. Within a couple laps I was closing down on dfpredator, having taken 3s a lap out of leader. As we came into the last corner I picked my spot as being the turn into the bridge (if I could get better traction out of 4/5 I could get alongside him). However I managed to catch him through the first corner, and he braked surprisingly early so I swerved out to the inside and took the corner to 2 perfectly to put me ahead.
Only problem was, for some reason I'm not sure of, so maybe others can help me, just as I swerved out and under braking the yellow flag sign came up. So even before I got to the corner I had overtaken under yellows. Drive through penalty - clearly the game had it in for me! I decided to take advantage of the clear space in front of me to use up my alloted 3 laps before having to take a drive through. I was now about 55s off of the lead.
I switched the engine map back to standard, only cranking it up for the 2 long straights (after the bridge and before the hairpin). After that I was basically racing against the leader's time. After my pit stop it was up to 1m15s, but I was catching them! With 4 laps to go and my position confirmed I switched the engine map down to cruise. Going into the last lap I was just 10s behind the next car ahead... and then I ran out of fuel. I didn't feel so bad, I knew I'd pushed things by taking a gamble. Was painful to see everyone whoosh by on the last lap tho.
Good race to the leaders - so annoyed I couldn't have been up there battling it out with you. Still for all the things that didn't go right for me it could have been worse, as marine and kangaroo didn't even get to drive the whole race, unlucky guys
