Assetto Corsa v0.5 released

Update: v0.5 is now released. Find the patch notes here: http://www.racedepartment.com/forum/threads/assetto-corsa-v0-5-released.80625/page-7#post-1618812

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15 cars left to get (well 16 with the LaFerrari, but this car will only be available with the 1.0 version of the game) so which ones are we getting friday ?! In theory we'll get 3 cars, but since we had a massive break we might get 4 like we did on Xmas. My guess is, we will get factory cars (bunch of Lotus's...) and none of the GT3's/1 GT2 or F1's.

The car I want the most is the T125 !!! release it already :p

Well guys and gals, lets share the car you wish on getting this friday and also what you believe will be release (it might not be the one you really expect yet).

these examples got me curios, but there is more.

Feels to me more arcadey than before. I have noticed tyre noise seems more in sync with the tyre but performance seems lackign something. Maybe just trying to hard to see differences rather than just adpating, but nearly reminds me of Grid or the free to play Raceroom.

Same here. The only thing that AC had going for it (in my opinion) was it's raw feedback reality. It's actually feels closer to Gran Turismo now, which is not good. The old M3 and Lotus 49 are the two cars that feel far worse to me, although the F40 feels tamed, too

Of course, one has to be careful with opinions. That's why I am asking here. Opinions might be a bit more reliable here. ;)

I found the AI really good, had some great races last night (and some hilarious races). The first few corners are chaotic but that's not any fault of the AI really.

I've found it's easier to race them on the hard setting, there's less braking mid corner or on the exit of corners from the AI. There's been at least two memorable occasions where the AI has clearer taken me out. In the super car race (probably on medium) I had caught the McLarens and was over taking for the lead and the Mclaren did a pit maneuver on me going down the back straight. car spun around down the straight a dozen times. In the BMW race they're all temperamental bastards.

They seem to be very hot tempered AI, but then, they are Italian. :p

Although I'm getting more and more addicted to AC, initially i thought it may have too much grip. But the more my laptimes improved, the more it grew on me, the closer you get to the limit the more it shines in my opinion. It's still hard to judge the physics of cars you've never driven hard, we can only assume if this is how they should feel.
Finally a car came along that I've had very close relations to in the past 2 years, I had the pleasure to abuse several 1 series BMW's (from 118's over a great tuned 125i to 130's, coupes and hatchbacks), often on backroads with shitty grip levels and currently I own three 118d hatchbacks.
If i can say one thing, it's the 1M does not have too much grip. To be honest, I'm surprised it isn't grippier since conditions in AC are perfect, it's wider and has wider tyres than the coupes I drove. It just feel SO MUCH like driving a 1 series, it's almost spooky. The precise steering, the understeer you get when going in too fast, the smooth and easy catchable oversteer that you can prolong just as easily if you feel like going sideways, everything feels spot on. Oversteer (although Kunos pretty much nailed the controllability) is hardly surprising in such a car, so I'm especially impressed of how they got that understeer right, which surprised me in the real car to begin with.

Realizing how close to the real thing the 1 series is even in the tiny details, I'm very inclined to think the rest of the cars can't be too shabby either.

I've finally had a chance to drive some of the cars after the update.
I'm very pleased with the outcome. The guys at Kunos have listened to the input and fixed some of the glaring handling issues.
The cars I've driven so far felt much more precise at turn in...as well they should.
I could never understand this notion in sim racing wherein just because a car is designed for tracking and has higher horsepower, it should handle like a 'pig' everywhere on track.
The exact opposite is true. We spend a lot of time and money getting precise suspension and shock absorber settings.
As good as the alignment is on my road car fitted with Koni Sports shocks, Eibach springs, HD sway bars and Akebono ceramic pads, it pales by comparison to any track car I've driven into a corner.

Well it's not an exact quote of what somebody else said, it is more likely a rehash of what has been posted, but at least similar things have been said on Steam, the comparison between a Simulator and GRID was there, also words like AC feels more "arcadish" now etc.

I will look it up... but it's going to take a while. I don't find the forums at Steam to be very user friendly.

I also find them to be full of gamers and guys who wouldnt know what a car should drive like, to me the tyre model has got a whole lot better.

I have a question since I do not own Assetto Corsa yet. However I don't want to stir up a dispute. But what can be said about quotes similar to: "since the last update, the handling of AC has changed from a Sim to the likes of GRID?"

I just want to read a few opinions about it, but please no discussions about it, if possible.

You can send me a pm too, if you wish so.

Thank you!

I agree, the game simulates the lack of friction on freshly polished ice in a very bad way. In fact the road feels more like "tarmac" if you allow the comparison. Terrible.

So guys how is the AI in the challenges ? and the 1M with the lotus any good ? Some people say that cars slide to much like GRID is that true ? :/

I ask because I will only be back at my home thursday, so no 0.5 until a few days more.

I have only driven the 458 after the update and I really like the improvement they made to the tire model. It still understears of course but slightly less than before I belive. Also has a much more belivable overstear when pushed, it now corrects like a car would do when loosing rear grip. The violent "snaps" (left-right-left-right) until you spun out is significantly reduced. I feel you can now feel more confident to save it with the normal corrections you would do in a real car.

Very positive feelings so far. :)

The AI is a bit unpolished, they sometimes look like they are scared of you and yield very easy but other times they seem to think they are in a demolition derby... but it is so much fun to finally have something else moving around on track than myself. :D

Yeah, I'll just be driving along and bomp, something hits me from my blind spot.

If you react to the pit maneuver by steering into the slide (like you should) you can go along for a few metres with the other car nosing at you until it gives up.

How do you expect me to read your posts when you have that avatar i can look at instead. :D

Have to say, for Kunos' first ever go at AI, they have done a superb job!

I smiled with amazement when chasing the lead 458 through Maggots and Becketts at Silverstone, both of us correcting little slides and keeping the power on. I had to pause and take a look at the replay just to check it out!

The 1M feels very good, as others have said, very controllable. I found that the Evora was very understeery, but then found that my throttle pedal was spiking. Changed to my other pedals and now the car, as well as others, actually stops for the corner and turns in! Should be able to improve my lap times now.

Assetto Corsa just keeps getting better and better. We are so privileged to be allowed access to it. Keep up the good work and thank you Kunos!

My opinion is, that this update shows us how much is still to be done. The driving experience itself is already "finished" in my view. It has the best physics of racingsimulations out there and is really fun to drive. But racing-wise (against AI or other human beings) there is still much work for kunos. I have thought they were a little further in development than what we have got now.

I mean, at summer 2012 at gamescom we already had AI and the feeling was already good. And when I see the difference from then to now, then I wonder if we get v1.0 before summer?!

Well there's only another 8 weeks until 1.0!
