And if they needed money, why not a kick-starter?
If i'm not mistaken, Kickstarter is only possible in two countries: UK and USA. So anyone in the world can pay, but only 2 countries can receive the money.
I believe KS has no legal subsidiaries (is that the correct word?) in any of those countries, so it could be even more of a pain to do a Kickstart, than their current preorder plan.
The product is so close to completion, supposedly, that the money from a preorder should have no effect. I don't want to preorder something, and then wait for months while they hold my money.
If it's so close to completion, they won't hold your money for long, and it wouldn't inconvenience you much.
If they wait for months while they hold your money, then the preorder would have some positive effect on them.
In any case, keep in mind that early money, such as bank loans or preorders, are what most companies use in order to do business. Not using early money, usually means getting less profit. Like it or not, the development of AC (multiplayer, cars, tracks, physics, etc) directly depends on the profit they can achieve.
Also, remember that they're already at least a year behind initial estimations, which not only means we (users) are running out of saliva, but also that they could very well be starting to run out of funds. I definitely have no idea, and think it's not probable (since their business does not only depend on end-users like us, but also on other deals, with BRD or whatever), but it's an option nonetheless.
