Of course this could have been unsportsmanlike and dangerous.
What if he/the team had done this a few minutes earlier when the Q wasn't over yet..

That could've happened as well

Yeah, but to my knowledge he did this after Q3 was done and no one was still doing a hot lap so he didn't affect anyone. I would have got the penalty more if he would have affected someone else's lap.

Maybe, but there's just one rule for qualy and practice.. And imo it would be just stupid to add an exception for this stuff. In that case everyone would do this in the last minute.
1. To qualify as light as possible
2. To reduce wear of the tyres.

IMO: This is the rule and just stick to it. Any violation of the rule = DQ.

Well Again Mclaren costed Lewis and i was thinking that Martin Whitmarsh only want to see JB on top Not Lewis that's why he was doing so
I wish Lewis Don't sign contract of MClaren next year and if possible go to Mercedes he can get better treatment over there with
One thing i was happy that they let him to race He can be at points for sure i think Wet race can help Him but can't say how much

How you can go back if you have not enough fuel to do so?
You have to leave 1L for FIA to test. So if you do your lap when the session ends it means you need to go in and leave a test to FIA.

Now if you want to run as light as possible you just make your run earlier without that 1L then come back in, refuel, go around one lap come back in and giva FIA a sample.

The rule specifies practice sessions. It somehow makes sense.

During a qualifying session, you stop the car anywhere because of fuel, and there's a yellow flag, and probably a red flag. Any other drivers on the track will have lost their hotlap attempt, and probably wasted a set of new tyres.

After the race, well, anyone who is behind you will already be finished.

So it can't be compared with cars running out of fuel after the race, because that does not break rule 6.6.2 (not sure if it's defined as an infraction anywhere in the rulebook though). I reiterate that I wish penalties were stated in the rules themselves, instead of left to the stewards' whim.

The reason you need to get back to pits is because FIA wants a fuel sample so you can´t cheat and run a lighter car then everyone else.
But it´s ok to run a tiny bit lighter then everyone else for 66 laps but not for 10 minutes in Q3.

Just as i said Hampus
Either Lewis or Martin Should leave Mclaren I wish Lewis Leaves mclaren he had enough with this team
He doesn't need to sign contract such a good player at a such a waste team
he can be at williams or Lotus or Mercedes Next year so that he can Do Miracles by Winning from them
Until Now i thought Mclaren was the Good team besides Mercedes and RBR but since Yesterday i've changed my Decision

Gary Anderson saw what happened.

The fuel rig guy put the rig on, but he had the handle set to drain fuel.

He discovered his mistake and switched it to put fuel in the car. But as a result he didn't put as much fuel in it as he should have.

You have to be able to drive back to the pit-lane and have one litre of fuel left for the FIA to test.

He went across the start-finish line 20 seconds before the chequered flag but if they had sat in the garage for three or four more seconds to get more fuel in, they still would have had time to cross the line and complete another flying lap. Sometimes I don't think McLaren think on their feet."

thing is hamilton stopped when the session had finished with no other cars on a hotlap. so it's exactly the same situation as when the drivers run out of fuel when the race has finished.
however, rules clearly state that you're not allowed to do this so a penalty is fair. it's just that putting hamilton all the way back to the grid for doing something which was neither unsportsmanlike or dangerous seems incredibly harsh

It's harsh but not the first time someone was excluded from qualifying. Jacques Villeneuve got put to the back after his team(Sauber) accidentally breached parc ferme regulations in 2005 at Brazil. They changed a part and he got put to the back for parc ferme infringement. Sauber made an honest mistake and JV is put to the back. Mclaren makes an honest mistake and gets put to the back. Seems consistent in that respect. So it's not like there's a different set of rules for Hamilton. Rules are rules...and you will be excluded if they're not followed.

Pastor the pastor, credit to Mr. BH for the idea :D

I have not checked if 100% of what I've been reading is factual, but from what I understand:

- Car stopped after Q (that one is clear)
- Car had barely the minimum amount of fuel for testing, so more than reasonable doubt exists that he would not get to pits with 1l.

So far, deserves a penalty. Now, why so harsh?

- Race directors inquiry about reason to stop.
- Team defends that there were superior force causes for it (so they could skip penalization).

And my guess here: - No other reason other than lack of fuel is found. Superior force is (at least for me), the car is burning, the oil temperature is rising enormously, the kers capacitors are about to explode, one wheel came loose, etc. Running on fumes is not one of those, they could go on to pits and show an empty tank and face penalization. Or they could abort the last Q lap, be 6th and no problems.

But they did neither, they went on, made pole, and then tried to escape punishment by twisting the interpretation of the rule. Thus the extra severe penalty. And lets not forget that this fuel rule exists solely because precisely the same actors (Hamilton/Mclaren) pulled off a similar stunt two years ago.
