Mobile Driving/Flying Cockpit with Motion and Tactile ( Build )

The Aero is definitely an interim solution.

I'm not liking the extra PITA of separate headphones (either set). On the other hand I'm hearing things I've never noticed before in some titles. So it's a more a factor of how long I'm in game uninterrupted.

I'm on again off again about leaving the auto IPD adjustment on. It works great, but every time I pull my headset back to see something I have that calibration screen waiting for me. I think I'll just turn it off most of the time and bank on becoming consistent on placing the headset in place since it's me wearing it 99% of the time.

The Varjo base software seems to turn off the Steam Room every time it boots. Granted that it how I want it if I'm going into a sim, but for other titles it's a bit annoying.

I have some issues getting errors opening SteamVR, but it's intermittent.

The gist of this is that if I am going to be in VR for a while, all of this is no big deal, but for stop and go action it's more painful to deal with.

The fan doesn't come on until it warms up and the headset will fog up if you want to use it quickly. I would love to just be able to enable the fan to stay on and I've put in a request for this feature.

At $2K is it actually worth keeping the product with so many flaws. I understand big step in resolution from Index, but G2 could give you similar jump at a fraction of a price before (if) something better comes out. I understand you didn't like many aspects of WMR, but was it really something completely unacceptable, or more like prejudice and your unwillingness to work around some issues, is room scale super precise tracking really that important to you?
Plus there is an option to my knowledge to still have station based tracking for controllers.

I'm very glad the G2 has worked for other people. It is absolutely not workable for me. I've put that completely to bed. I would absolutely use my Index instead of a G2 every time. I felt disoriented in the G2. I could not get used to moving my head a lot. I like looking with my eyes. The Index was great for that and the Aero works well with that as well.

The Aero is workable and I got it fully expecting it to be a solution to hold me until the next Index comes out and nothing more.

To be clear, for all my bitching, the Aero is what I'll be using for a while and I have no regrets. It just isn't perfect. It's not bad and my complaints are more nitpicky than tragic.

But it all comes back to how amazingly good the Index is. Valve really really nailed that headset. I look forward to their next iteration. It will be my next long term headset and I'll use the Aero until they release it. I just don't know how long that wait will be.

Well, you saved me from an expensive mistake. I was also thinking of getting an Aero to replace my Index but that would also mean a new PC to replace my current one. I'll be waiting for the next Index and will update the ageing PC then. As everyone knows, the best time to build a PC is always next year. :)

And that is exactly why I'm trying to be as honest as I can be about my experiences.

The Aero is an impatience purchase, but I walked in with my eyes open.

If you take $2K headset + $2K for 4090 + likely a computer upgrade + audio solution you have spent a large chunk of change.

I do not want people to think the Aero is the best thing since sliced bread and following me down this rabbit hole because I wasn't transparent about the reality of owning an Aero, warts and all.

Varjo was after the professional market and created the Aero because of demand. People have been impatiently waiting for the next great all around solution. I think the Aero helps fill that gap. It's not a bad product. It is comfortable well designed and with the right hardware delivers a good experience.

But after experiencing the Index for 3.5 years I already know that the Aero is something I'll likely use for maybe a year. I don't know exactly how long it will be, but I'm still waiting for something that will actually replace the Index and be something I will love living with for a while.

The crux of this is that personal priorities are very subjective.

We have very different priorities. Back when I had a Rift CV1 and you had a Samsung Odyssey I felt I had good reasons to stick with the CV1. I can list my reasons why it was a good for for me at the time and you can list the reasons why it was not a good fit for you.

I can respect that difference of opinion and priorities.

Years ago when I decided the Index was what I wanted, you had a very strong anti-lighthouse tracking sentiment and considered it obsolete on arrival because of the resolution.

Once again that is perfectly fine and I can respect that we had different priorities.

The fact is that today I would still pick the CV1 over the Odyssey and I would still have purchased the Index when I did.

This is the same situation.

We have a different list of what we consider inconveniences and deal breakers.

Obviously I'm more willing to work around issues on a headset that I consider inconveniences than I am one that I consider having deal breakers. These are my dealbreakers not yours.

I agree that the G2 is one hell of a bang for the buck headset, and I continue to believe that if you can make that headset work for you, than do it.

On top of that we are in complete agreement that the Aero is not a financially responsible purchase especially for an interim solution. I'm not trying to tell everyone to go out and buy an Aero.

I feel like on a roller coaster ride with the Aero. There may still be a settling out period.

I selected the option for the Aero to remember my IPD rather than on or off and it appears to only run the calibration once this way when I first put it on and that seems like just the right amount of calibration, so no longer a pain point.

I'm just opening SteamVR from within the Varjo base software now and it's right there in front of me, so no big deal there either.

I've got my earphones keyed now so I can easily feel for the left and right side. Today I was just loving the clarity and colors on the screen and I'm getting more used to the 846's and I was hearing a lot more that I never noticed before.

So while I may still consider this an interim, headset, I won't be suffering with it. I still need more time with it to get everything sorted.

I looked at a few of them.

I decided at least for now that I'm going to stick with the IEM's for the duration on the Aero.

As much as I hate to say it I am getting better fidelity than I was getting with the Index off ear speakers.

I think I'm still getting accustomed to them.
No doubt IEMs can provide better sound fidelity, it's all about convenience and if application warrants inconvenience and irritation of shoving them into ear canals every time you put headset on, and pulling out when VR session is over, or you need to hear something or someone in the room. Even with my extensive stash of different headphones and IEMs I always used OEM solution that came with VR headset, just less hassle and good enough for the use case philosophy.

Once again I'm not arguing for using IEM's vs. the off the ear speakers the Index had. I'm just saying that I'm going to use the IEM's for a while. I'll happily go back to off ear speakers again in the future.

So I'm not saying I've suddenly seen the light and now I just love IEM's. I just saying I'm going to stick with them for a while to see what I notice. They are new to me. Shaking things up once in a while is OK.

A short snipet of iRacing with surround sound.

It is crystal clear, but I'm still working through the settings suggested on the Varjo discord server. The detail on the signage and other cars is very nice.

I found out something I didn't realize yet.

For non-varjo SDK games the default high setting drops from 35ppd to 27ppd.

So all this time I "thought" I was running at 35ppd, it was 27ppd. The good news is that it still looks really really good at 27ppd.

Soooo I set it to highest which says (highest)39ppd initially until you are in game, but then switches to (highest)35ppd for non-Varjo SDK software. Holy FREAKING CRAP that is SHARP!!!! Just laser sharp! Like what the hell would we ever need more than that sharp!

My eyes are bleeding that looks incredible!

:( But of course running at 35ppd completely knocked the wind out of my 4090!!!!

It completely MAXED out my 4090 playing Space Pirate Trainer and it was still not maintaining a solid 90fps. It was pegged!

There is no way in hell I'm going to see iRacing at 35ppd unless they get the foveated rendering running more efficiently through OpenXR.

So when the 50 series GPU is released this same headset will be at yet another level.

I am so so so hoping Valve will offload processing to the headset with their next headset otherwise we will still be waiting for the 60 series to drive it well.

I was given the following by Bernard Berger and after setting everything up and exiting all the way out of iRacing a few times I got it to work.

I have a solid 90fps at 35ppd with GPU ~70% :)

iRacing Settings:
MSAA 4x
AF 16x
FXAA/SMAA off (important!)
Sharpening on

Rest of the settings depending on what your CPU can handle. I think with the 13900K you can max out everything you find (except cars on the grid and keep the Sky, grandstands and crowd to low)

---

OpenXR ToolKit:
FFR custom,
Outer Ring 100%
165% width
Cull Outer Ring
Inner Ring: 65%
Middle Ring 1/4
HAM cull on
"Disable HAM mask": off (3rd or 4th tab I believe)
Turbo Mode on
CAS sharpening: 70%

---

Nvidia Control Panel:
MFAA on
AA optimizations off
Texture quality: High Quality
Trilinear optimizations: off
AA Transparency: Multisample

This is actually showing 65% GPU at highest 35ppd

Now I'm hoping I can run Dirt Rally 2.0 the same way.
The NVidia settings are the default global settings now.
I can replicate the OpenXR toolbox settings.
Then hopefully I just need the MSAA x 4 and everything else at Ultra. Fingers crossed!
