Is that SteamLink an old news, not really into Meta ecosystem?
Boz (Oculus' Chief Technology Director) was just posting about it with really positive views. Word on the streets is Virtual Desktop still has less compression and better interface but costs $15 whereas SteamLink has lower latency and is free. It's likely Valve will continue to develop theirs and bring it up to par with 3rd party options but atm it only wins convenience awards.Good news for Quest users then.
Not sure if Zuckerberg is happy or not about this development, nor do I care.
Latency depends what codec and image fidelity you go for with bot vd and steam link?Boz (Oculus' Chief Technology Director) was just posting about it with really positive views. I don't use either so I'm basing this off folks doing tests that have been reporting on this. Something like 20ms latency with steamlink vs 40 or so with VD. Most seem to still prefer VD cause it look better thoughLatency depends what codec and image fidelity you go for with bot vd and steam link?
Are you sure its lower on steam link?
I get around 60 ms with vd going for the codec with the least compression. But can go much lower then that with lower settings
Maybe right. I havent used the worst codecs but hasnt seen below 40 ms. I havent fiddled that much but what I found is the steam link actually seem sharper with more detail but seem to aim at lower fps its not fluid where vd I am at 90 fps and silky smooth but softer pictures with vd. Soft in a good way I feel like more aa though less detail in dogmeats fur. But fallout 4 is plenty dark alsoI don't use either so I'm basing this off folks doing tests that have been reporting on this. Something like 20ms latency with steamlink vs 40 or so with VD. It does not really make it "compact" with all parts sticking out, what an awkward design, could have done better with streamlined full enclosure, instead of pseudo compact ugly contraption. Inside out tracking is a plus, if works. It all makes for a pretty compact PC VR headset, which you might compare to its biggest competition, Bigscreen Beyond
At the same time if bsb have been estimating 90% of headsets are ok for customers and 10% are returning because of fit or ipd issues - darn that is 10.000 returns for which a number of those go back again.Read something the the other day that jumped out at me.
The CEO of BigscreenVR recently made a comment about pricing for some of their components getting more reasonable after they hit 100,000 headsets and he made it sound like they were well on their way towards making that happen.
Overlapping the Quest 3 launch, that's saying something! Meta will sell millions of the Quest 3, but it's looking like the Bigscreen Beyond is posting some pretty serious numbers for a company other than Meta.
1.8 Million Views in 2 weeks doesn't hurt either.

The cost of the quest 3 mean it will not sell that much compared to earlier quest headsets. There is mention of a cheaper version pretty much quest 2 with the XR2 Gen 2 SoC for 199$ next year that might be the real hitRead something the the other day that jumped out at me.
