Just joined, looking into iRacing...

As the current economic situation has put a serious dent in my track time, am looking at an alternative to weekends at the track.

Anyone have any experience or suggestions regarding iRacing?

Have heard some good things, and when I look at the costs involved, seems to be an attractive alternative to shoe shopping with my wife, and hearing her "comment" on the cost of fuel, tires, and shiny bits that keep showing up on my monthly bank statements......

Would like to hear about what works best as far as a steering wheel/pedal set up, and individual opinions on tracks, cars and your experience in general....

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Exactly the kind of driver one does not want to race with... Don't you see the point with qualifying? People like you who make a point in trying to overtake the lot most often cause turmoil in the field already in the first turn by imitating a Kamikaze pilot in order to show everybody how good and fast they are.... Or later in the race by doing uncareful overtakings as their patience runs out on the slower guys...

I really think people should not be allowed to race without having set a Q-time. Fast drivers starting from the back and being much faster than several cars in front cause unnecessary risk situations.

Very simple.

hey, i started my first race ever in iracing(realy any computer game with a wheel/pedals), with about 25-30 mins expeirence at it, from outside 2nd to last row.(didnt bother qualifying, i tried it at a friends house, so it was a rookie class, but he had a decent safety/driving rating..)

the only time i made contact with anyone, is when somebody that i just passed thaught they were clear and tried to cut to the bottom(i managed to save it) and went on to win the race.. passed the leader with 5 to go.

anyone can start from the pole and take off with a clean track.. whats the fun in that??, a racer can do it cleanly from deep in the pack, where the real racing is.. id rather have a good, tough, tight race and finish 3/4/5, then have a boring race by myself out front wining and clicking off qual. laps..

im with ya edward..

Hi,

If I were you I'd ask around in the dedicated iRacing section of the forums, or the similar forum on Racesimcentral. At least on RSC I've seen some iRacers who are in a similar position as you, using the service as an alternative to weekends at a track.

you know what iracing needs..

iracing needs some dirt tracks...wiht some dirt cars, like late models, or some dirt sprints..

that would be wicked..

It's getting better and better, cars a little limited for me i.e. only one saloon, no GT's (yet) and very American bias with plenty of Ovals.

However, it does feel very good to drive and the racing is very intense especially as you are penalised for crashing and incidents.

I'd definitely recommend giving it a try for a month at least, even the basic Solstice car is good fun if a little slow. :)

Thanks all....

Picked up the G25, and have been trying my hand at the Solstice...(Am very surprised at the learning curve and I think the physics model is a bit out there...) This is due to the MAJOR over steering required to manage things at times....

But overall, this is LIGHT YEARS ahead of what I had expected....

And Edward, you are spot on...the penalty system is very REAL WORLD....

But...good thing is.....no more wrenching, entry fees, horrible track food...or waiting on parts and crews.......

Now if they can just expand their car line up a bit...

And maybe find it in their hearts to add Spa and Hockenheim..... ;)

Yeah definitely need more European circuits and cars.

Once you get used to the physics model you'll realise you never really need to use more than 90' lock unless it's a real tight bend, the Solstice is a road car so works well being thrown to the apex and controlled on the throttle out of it.

I'm looking forward to the GT cars coming early next year.

They are two different games. :)

ARCA is an 'off the shelf title' for oval racing, supposidly very good but I'm not an oval man myself so can't really tell you.

iRacing is an online only subscription service, you download the client after you subscribe. Whilst it's not very cheap, it is very realistic and pure online so the racing is always fun and interesting.

I own both sim's arca u can only buy from the usa..Its oval racing like nascar u buy it from the arca site .And take's about 2 weeks to arrive worth the wait very good online racing ..iracing u pay $20 to subscribe and for that u get a road car and oval car and a few tracks to race um on...thay are rookie car's as at first u start with a rookie licence.then after u work your way up to the next licence u can race diff car's and tracks ..tho u will have to buy the cars and tracks u want to race..it is expensive but to me well worth it ..hope this helps :)

Thanks for the time on explaining it to me it sounds really interesting. So you are saying as you get farther along you upgrade via Money every upgrade suck as tracks and cars only right? If so that sounds cool as he** i guess its really worth it when you have a group to race with though. Seeing how i don't know any one or groups i guess ill just hang out here an get to know the Sim racing better then give it a shot. Bad thing it that my steering wheel is acting funky for some reason only on right turns its all over the place back and fourth just in the first few degrees to the right. IDK whats wrong with it.

Some input please

Ok as most of you should know by now i have only been here for two days an i just cant seem to get the settings right for steering my cars. The legend ford 34 coupe it just seems to be over steering ALOT! the tail end over runs me when turning, then again at times the front end seems to just spin around as well. The fastest lap time im able to get is 17.091 on Lanier National Speedway. On the other hand with my monty carlo i have it set just right (give or take) for Atlanta speed way. With a time of 33.546. (took like 2 hours to get set) Maby its my freebie steering wheel i got from a friend. I have a logitech Wingman Formula Gp http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...e=380345&creativeASIN=B00004VUFE&linkCode=asm

Yea i know old huh i was thinking of the G25. Any ways if any one has a pointers or tips please let me know thanks.

Mostly it is not the wheel that determines the speed, but the one touching the wheel :)thumb:). Unless your pedals are spiking you dont need a new wheel to reach better times. Although a G25, like you mention is a wheel with amazing FFB feelings and will defenitly gives you more joy with your game compared to you current wheel!
