8th career win for Engberink
Tim Engberink has won the Hungarian GP ahead of fellow countryman Donald Brugman. Mane Goddard completes the podium in 3rd.
The Minardi driver got better off the line to take the early lead from Engberink. Kederer got up 2 places and was running behind them in 3rd. Martins dropped to 7th behind Reed and Hunsley. Utzer slowly started to move up the order, while teammate Laad dropped back, being fueled for a one stopper. Martins was holding up Utzer, allowing the top 6 to open a gap. In lap 8 everything went wrong for Reed, running in 4th he got off the track in turn 14 and hit the wall. The car was sliding back on track, where it was hit by both Saubers. Reed was out of the race, while both Said and Diehl had to pit for damage repairs, putting an end to their chance for points. In lap 17th the race was over for the Jordan team, first Hunsley rolled out with a gearbox failure right after his stop, a few seconds later Kederer stopped with a water leak.
At the front Goddard handed the lead over to Engberink when he made his first of three stops, before he got it back when Engberink pitted for his first of two stops. Around halftime of the race Goddard led Engberink by 1 second, followed by Brugman a further 10 seconds down. Utzer was in 4th, behind him were Martins, Sigoulakis, Keranen and Black. Rinneaho had retired as well in the meantime, he spun out and got stuck in a gravel trap.
Goddard dropped to 3rd after his second stop, but was back in the lead when Engberink and Brugman pitted a couple of laps later. However he still had to make another stop, and the gaps were only 4 and 20 seconds respectively. He got back out in 3rd in lap 61, 20 seconds behind Engberink and 7 behind Brugman. Utzer as well had lost some places, dropping from 4th to 7th. Engberink cruised to his 2nd win this year, ahead of Brugman who managed to stay ahead of Goddard. Keranen secured his first points this season in 4th, Black followed in 5th. Martins has been running in 6th, but was struggling a lot on worn tyres, which saw him getting passed by both Utzer and Harvey.

FIA Press Conference
@Timmieturner12: Pole, win, fastest lap, and also closed down the gap to 1st a lot. Could it have been any better?
@Donaldinho105 @Mane Goddard: For you guys too an important result in regards to the championship fight. Expecting some intense battles in the final races?
@Aidan Keranen: Strong performance today to secure 4th, an important result regarding contract talks?

Market is open!
Wow!

Paddock rumours
  • Jordan might have a vacancy, as seemingly one of their drivers is seeking for a new challenge
  • Williams drivers Laad and Utzer have been seen talking with officials of other teams. The poor reliability of the BMW engine might be playing a part in this
  • Life-time contract for Goddard? Seriously, can you imagine Minardi without him behind the wheel?
