Kederer takes home win
The Jordan driver took his 5th win, closely followed by Ferrari driver Donald Brugman. With Goddard in 3rd it meant that the leading 3 of the championship also took the podium positions.
At the start Engberink only just managed to keep the lead, Brugman who had started 3rd almost sneaked through. Laad lost one place to Kederer, Goddard got past Hunsley and Black up to 5th. Approaching turn 2 Heymans missed the braking point, crashing into Said. Both had to pit for new wings. Sigoulakis had made use of all the confusion, after the hairpin he was running in 11th, having gained 9 places. Diehl was working his way up from 8th, after battling with Laad for a couple of laps he was in 5th. Laskey had some problems with turn 1, he spun there twice in the first 6 laps, losing a bunch of time. Utzer got a bit held up during the first laps, dropping him to 14th before retiring with a gearbox failure in lap 10. At the front Engberink increased his lead over Brugman. Kederer couldn't follow the 2 Dutchmen, and soon had Goddard at his back. A few laps before the stops started Martins retired with a broken suspension.
Engberink was the first one to pit, but he remained in the lead of the two stoppers. New race leader however was Black, who was running on a one stop strategy and yet to pit. Brugman got held up by traffic in the pits and lost one position to Kederer. Goddard followed in 5th with one stopper Keranen right behind him. Diehl was in 7th, ahead of Laad, Hunsley and Sigoulakis. Engberink was within a second to Black, who was struggling with worn tyres at that point. He tried to pass him for the lead, but they made contact. Black could continue straight away keeping the lead, but Engberink dropped to 7th behind Keranen. It was 5th one lap later when both Black and Keranen pitted, but the gap to 1st was 20 seconds. Kederer inherited the lead, 3s ahead of Brugman, 5s ahead of Goddard. That didn't change much until the final round of stops.
Both Brugman and Goddard lost a fair bit of time, meaning that Kederer now enjoyed a 10 second lead. Diehl kept 4th ahead of Engberink, Black was back up to 6th now. Keranen, Laad, Hunsley and Sigoulakis followed closely, however Hunsley soon dropped out of the fight for points, suffering a puncture one lap after he had pitted. There were no more changes in the final laps, Brugman closed the gap to Kederer a bit, at the same time pulling away from Goddard. Diehl maintained the 2s gap to Engberink, a bit further back Black did the same.
FIA Press Conference
@Donaldinho105: You were running ahead of Kederer in the first stint, did the slow stop cost you the win?
@Mane Goddard: You seemed to lack a bit of pace, was 3rd the best result possible today?
@Diehl: It seems the team improved the car a lot over the last races, will we see you returning to the podium soon?
