F1 2017 Modding Questions Thread

At least some time ago game crashed with custom liveries with invitational events
ye, i know that from experience, thus my question.
I know that liveries and helmets dont mess with career mode and saving but last time I had modded liveries the game crashed when entering an invitational event, hopefully it gets fixed or is fixed.

How do you guys make such good helmets with geometric designs and patterns? I don't understand it. I'd love to make Massa's Spa helmet, but I have no idea how to even begin!

How do you make such cool helmets with geometric patterns? Or how do you even make a helmet like Grosjean look perfect? What Photoshop technique am I missing?

3d templates

3d templates

So I've downloaded the 3d Template that I think you uploaded a while back and have been using it...would you care to elaborate a bit more on the method and tools I should be using? Or is this a Personal Message type convo we should dive into?

Thanks for you help, and the helmet! It's pretty stellar!

I haven't done 3d templates, they're from MarcoFD. I made sponsor templates (which I should update too:whistling:), but for 3d templates I think best for you is to watch Kris's career helmet tutorial

Hey Guys
what file do i need to access i order to change to change driver names
eg. change the name displayed for each driver (Create a custom name for a driver on another team not for the player for the AI to use as a driver)
i don't want to change the face or helmet just the name for the driver.

If I can just bump into this, I think at the moment to make helmets like that absolutely perfect is a bunch of trial and error. The templates you find here are accurate enough to get started on recreating a design, but the helmets in game are mapped just a bit differently which means something that looks good on the template isn't necessarily going to look the same in game. [Edit] I should point out that this is because the models are pulled from earlier versions of the game, and as far as I know there's no way (yet) to export the models out of the new game.

A few pointers;
- In photoshop you can generate a wireframe-layer that gives you an idea how certain parts of the texture interconnect;
- The fastest way to get correct placement is to position it the way you want it as a new layer on top of the 3d model view, then right-click the layer and choose 'merge down';
- If you're new to photoshop, check out some tutorials on masking and using the pen-tool. The pen is essential in making cool designs, IMO, and masking makes designing so much easier.

And last but not least... Just get started. Think of an idea an create it until you're satisfied.

Upgrading engine manually from perfomance files.
So from what I understand is that this is how it works:

You take the values for whatever it gives you in the tier under upgrade and add them to the values after “Y” in the engine category. That should produce a small upgrade. If you multiply everything will be screwy. I haven’t had it happen that a tier 1 upgrade makes it faster than a Ferrari. The only time I had that happen was when I messed with the fuel power setting.

Answers if someone has?:whistling:

Are you talking about just adding Tier 1 Upgrade Numbers to the engine Y parameters in the VTX file?

So I compared the base Ferrari “y=” engine values and the base Renault “y=” engine values and some of the base Renault engine values are higher in certain spline sections. But also the Team Renault engine performance file doesn’t have Tier 1 upgrade values it only has a Tier 2 and Tier 3. So if you applied the Tier 2 engine upgrades on the Renault and the Tier 1 engine upgrades on the Ferrari you might have slightly better performance out of the Renault.

Making my first f1 game skin, making skins in rfactor was much easier but trying to complete this skin for mclaren

Sweet! Thank you so much! I'll look into the pen tool and masking!

Hello, which 3d model are you using for helmet skins? i tried http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/f1-2017-3d-templates-helmet-and-driver.16873/
but when i paint some lines on 3d model and then merge down the layer this lines will disappear.Sometimes whole, sometimes half.

Guys please help.
Before https://imgur.com/MJGh6YT
After merged down

why that lines dissapear after merge?

I was having the same problem and found a way around. Open the original 3D helmet template file and use the attached texture do not remove it or replace it. If you want to make it 4096 x 4096 then change the file size and drag in new files. Also make sure you are painting on the diffuse texture and not the refection.

So I'm a bit confused. I'm trying to make red bull a bit stronger so they can challenge Merc and Ferrari, but i'm not quite sure how the xml works. I have two red bull xml's open, one from my career(halfway through season 2) and one that is the stock one, but I cant see any difference between them. Does the variables not change when an upgrade is applied? Does the game do that itself one I start up career? I've checked a few variables and they all look the same.

No, the VTX doesn't change in your career mode. Rather the game follows the rules of what the 'Upgrade Tier (whatever number)' tells it to do whether or not it be adding, dividing, or multiplying a quantity in one section by the other.

Yeah that's what I thought, thanks. So to give the red bulls a boost, i should up the base value of whatever i want to change, right?
