Aristotelis Vasilakos:
You get an M3 E92, strip it to the bare metal, tune the engine with race components, create a dedicated racing suspension and if that all wasn’t crazy enough, go berserk with body aerodynamic modifications. What do you get? A prototyped disguised as a BMW named M3 GT2.
The rules as usual ruin all the fun, limiting engine power to just under 500bhp. Combine the relatively low power with the sticky and enormously wide slick tyres, tons of downforce and highly tuned suspension and you might think this car might not be very exciting. Well, Assetto Corsa is very good at simulating street tyres and cars… but boy are you going to get excited with this monster!

I will be glad to play the game and I'm sure it will be in a good state and very content / feature rich despite it being beta.

I'm not sure why AC was not launched like this from the start , I guess kunos were head deep in development rather than evaluating the market place and the trend for game development and distribution over the last 2 years and the whole steam green light + sales situation took them by surprise. ( who knows)

The thing is "beta" has no real meaning now , most games are constantly developed and so are always having changes made, new content made, bugs fixed and new bugs introduced games are very much a service now rather than a one off product.

I just wonder if there is some way for kunos to differentiate AC from other driving games that are in beta given that AC is probably more feature complete and solid than other games that are still in development ( when it comes to core physics and core content ( or maybe its a mess :p ))

One of the biggest issues facing RF2 has been the new builds of the game crashing mods and making mod development a pain in the ass. This can really dissuade people from the platform especially given its new complexities over RF1 , I feel that AC and RF2 are in direct competition in that it will be one or the other that becomes the default Mod/league platform and whoever gets that prize will likely benefit quite substantially in the long run.

It will be very
interesting to see how strong AC is as a mod platform at launch and how versatile and stable moding will be with AC , I really hope they can use the steam workshop as it resolves so many issues , though puts quite a burden on the developer.

Or maybe its the case that Kunos are going to focus on high quality licenses and selling that as DLC as I could see that as
being very lucrative and viable over time.

finally !!

I think I and allot of people were eager to have an actual solid well rounded game to dive into partly in a nostalgic sense of playing a new game , but also party to get that feeling you get when you are hungry and you are presented with a large tasty meal and the prospect of eating all that food.

Now its just a waiting game before we can get our grubby hands on the software !

I believe that is, won't bring anything good for them...

I don't see how offering more ways to purchase AC would bring less money? Maybe you can enlighten the community since you are obviously very educated in this matter.
Buy it on Steam or not. It's your choice and don't blame Kunos. They have almost 70!! Million members so I would call it the biggest gaming marketplace in the world. They even have more users than Xbox Live!! So who cares about 10 dinosaur guys boycotting Steam?

There isn't any mod support on launch Aristotelis said :( But very soon after launch!

If you bought netkar pro, you could activate it on 3 different computers and play online at the same time..they lost 2 costumers with that kind of key activation. With steam that problem is solved for them.

Brilliant!! 10 vs 70 million! Who knew and yes who would care?! But hey ultimatums make better sense for everyone. Why have two choices when you can have only one instead.

Let's be honest (and rational); it's less work for Kunos to focus on Steam only. Right now every minute of dev time is vital. To make sure they have multiple reliable downloadservers and a special install package (including another update client (!) takes a lot of time. Only very few people are so vocal about not wanting to use steam.

Ifit would be your company, looking from a business perspective, what would you do yourself?

Thanks for the reasonable post, Steam must have people on the payroll for it to be Steam or death.

You make a valid point but rF2 does just fine with it and Kunos did just fine with it for nKPro and AC TP. Steam enablement is probably more "new" work than keeping things the way they were. Although it is clear they are doing it in the hopes of reaching a larger user base. To answer your question, If it was my company, I wouldn't exclude a part of my user base in the hopes of replacing them with more new users. Old saying in business, it is easier to keep a customer than to get a new one.

Less work is prob a part of why steam is chosen, but I'm pretty sure there are several others, like not having to buy, set up, and manage distribution servers, or pay some host for it, pay for bandwidth cost, which will be quite a lot of money if they sell a good share of copies of the game, then there's paying for a system to transfer money. And if that's not reaons enough to go with the single biggest digital distribution platform for games, Steam, then the tons of possible legal issues they could face in some countries that they now won't have to spend a second even thinking about, because Valve does that for them could be a reason in and of itself.

I wouldn't mind seeing more than one option for others to use, but personally I stick to Steam.

Don't know if kunos did fine with nkp are the right words.. the servers maybe wouldn't be that empty... maybe that also has to do with the first versions of nkp... but that also explains why they take its time now for AC...

But I wouldn't say kunos did well with nkp in sense of business.. which is ofcourse a big point for a developer.. especially with all that licenses and such things

ofcourse it's nice if you can get the game anywhere... but otherwise wihtout steam there would be alot more of pirating I think... which is a thing that kunos can't afford this time I think.. at least not in such a big scale like non steam games have to deal with... I am alot more happy with a steam only release... then with strange copy protection which won't work and only drive the honest costumers crazy...

I don't know how much steam only games are cracked.. I am sure also there is some pirating going on.. but somehow I think it's alot less then with usual available titles.

And even if every Sim Racer would be an honest costumer.. there would be alot more pirated versions out there then I think... because the sim racing community is quite small..

So now the conversation is about protecting Kunos from all the big bad pirates. I would bet a couple hundred that we have two or three guys posting as six or seven different people that just happen to be the major posters around here. Steam is the best thing ever for everyone! Yay!! Winner! Agree x100. Funny! Sigh. My bad for knowing better and wandering in anyway.

I hope for Kunos sake those 11K likes are real people with real money who plan to buy it on Steam...

Aristotelis Vasilakos:
The BMW M3 E30 is the car that started the ///M legend. The race version, won everything and then some. Considering that it raced in an era where the racing cars where based on close versions of the street cars, that tells a lot about the quality of the street car.
Looking at it objectively, it “only” has 238bhp and weights almost 1300kg. The original suspension is old style soft and the geometry is obsolete by today’s standards.
So how is it possible that this car still provides enthusiasm with a perfectly neutral handling and pure analogical feedback to the driver? ///Magic.
