Project CARS 2 Review 4.jpg

RaceDepartment take the new Project CARS 2 game for a spin and share our experiences.

Now I have to say something in advance of writing this review, I want Project CARS 2 to be good. I really, really do. Sim racing is my passion, and to have another big player on the scene vying for my game time is a very exciting prospect, and something which I found myself getting increasingly excited about on the run up to release last month.

Frankly I was sceptical after being bitterly disappointed by the original Project CARS game, so it came as something of a surprise when I gradually found myself being reeled in by the relentless marketing push for the new title throughout the build up to a public release, especially all the noise the developers were making about how the game would push the boundaries of realism and "redefine the genre of sim racing". These are all things that grab my attention, massively.

On face value many of the boxes one would like to see ticked prior to getting out on track have a resounding big fat happy smiley face next to them - loads of cars? Check. Loads of tracks? Check. VR support? Check. Dynamic weather and time of day? Check. These things are all good. These things give the game a massive leg up over the competition before a wheel has even been turned. Unfortunately turning said wheel is when things start to go a little bit wrong for Project CARS 2, and that is where the disappointment and frustration start to creep in to the experience, massively.

Project CARS 2 Review 2.jpg

Now I'm no technical expert but I've been around a while, and mixing together my own experiences and using the help of our community and my good friend Mr. Google, after literally hours of tinkering and a download of the epic Jack Spade tweaker file later I managed to get a pretty decent setup going through my wheel (Fanatec CSW V2). This is a massive improvement over the original title, however you still have to work to damn hard to get under the skin of the game to find something half reasonable in the force feedback, which frankly is a shame and unnecessary. Why after all the discussion and criticism from the community levelled at the developers following the original PCARS release do we still have to download a community made file to get the FFB half decent is beyond me, and something that SMS should really consider as a bit of an own goal once all the initial fuss has died down following game release.

Now don't get me wrong, I still don't think I'm fully in the sweet spot for the force feedback despite my trials and tribulations getting things setup, and the rear of the car still feels too vague for me to confidently begin to push past the outer edge of performance, but in comparison to the original release the overall experience is much better and doesn't kill off the game before it even starts. Not at the level of the other sim racing titles out on the market today, but definitely a decent base from which to build upon.

Project CARS 2 Review 5.jpg

So lets break down our impressions into a few key areas of the title:

UI - Vastly improved over the cluster of mess that was Project CARS. Looks neat, professional and functional. I find flicking through to the different menus easy and straight forward, but still keeping that stylish Project CARS feel and vibe. For me this is one of the most impressive improvements over the original game, and possibly the best UI of any of the sim racing titles currently available. Nice background music too and the bits of Ben Collins speaking about Senna are a nice touch, although these could maybe get a bit tiresome after a few hours of continual play.

Weather - Visually very impressive and aquaplaning is a thoroughly enjoyable extra dimension. Perhaps more grip than I would expect as my track experiences suggest more throttle steer and better modulation of the loud pedal out of corners would be needed than is currently simulated, however overall despite the limitations in some areas weather in PC2 is an area where the game stands out above its rivals. Some gripes I do have with it are when you get to the randomisation element of this feature, as basically selecting random weather means over 90% of the time you can expect some level of wetness, which is a shame as I would have liked to see more variety in the mix, such as dry running for a number of sessions then maybe a shower at the end of the race or something. Having tested almost 20 race weekends with random weather, I've had rain or snow during at least one session on every occasion...

Project CARS 2 Review.jpg

Speaking of snow, lets be honest now, this is a gimmick and one that any serious sim racer will rarely use in a race setting. Strangely this cannot be removed from the weather randomiser, so you could get seriously annoyed when it pops up in a race weekend and spoils all the fun. This really does need to be addressed, as who wants to race GT3's at Brands Hatch in the snow anyway?

AI - A total and utter disaster. Period. How in the name of all that is sacred did this get past QA I will never know. The AI is simply awful. First corner crashes, no awareness and ridiculously slow wet driving are all regular occurrences that continually pop up to hurt the soul. One evening I endeavoured to do a race weekend at the Nurburgring in a Lamborghini GT3, a car and track combination I hadn't yet tried. At 105% difficulty with a default setup and no fuel removed I finished my 15 minute practice in P23, 1.6 seconds off the pace. This was good, I had some more pace to give in the limited time I had on track, but that is exactly where I wanted to be and I was a happy boy. Maybe another 3 tenths could've been won if I didn't keep crossing up in the chicane, but that was fine. Come my 10 minute qualifying and hey, random weather so time for rain. Ran two laps, put it on pole by 1.6 seconds. Parked it, remained on pole. Hmm.

Race day comes around and the rain has progressed to a thunderstorm (random weather rain strikes again). Get a good launch off the rolling start and by lap 3 I have 45 seconds of lead, without even pushing the car at all. ESC and back to menu. Little grey X button in the top right hand corner, shut down PC, walk away and mash a cup of tea. Not impressed. Sadly this is the case every time some rain falls, and let us be honest, I'm no Michael Schumacher in the rain. Something is wrong, very wrong indeed.

Project CARS 2 Review 5.jpg

Car selection - Excellent. Some really nice cars and a lovely mix of the old and new are included, giving pretty much everyone the opportunity to have a go in something they might enjoy. All the big brands are present, so Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes or whatever takes your fancy can be fired up and raced around the many tracks in the game. A nice nod towards official series such as IndyCar are also welcomed, however the lack of real drivers despite the series licence and liveries grinds a bit, and kinda spoils it for me. Regardless of that little bugbear, you can't really fault the choice of cars in game, and all seem to be of solid quality and look wonderful from inside the cockpit using VR. Very happy.

Tracks - Again plenty to choose from, however for me the quality varies massively between different circuit selections. Some of them are just downright bad, both the visuals and accuracy, leaving a bit of a hit and miss feel to the whole game and giving one the impression that quite a few have been thrown in just to bump up the numbers, rather than striving to match the quality level expected of a game of this level.

Quality variances aside, it is nice to see that all the different weather options can be used on all the circuits, and that the game doesn't artificially limit what cars can be used on which circuit. Red Bull Ring in snow driving a WRX? No worries, the option is open for you to try. IndyCar at Knockhill? Go for it. Quite a cool thing to see and something I'm pleased about, if only for the novelty value of trying out weird combinations you would never see in real life.

Summary - Now I started writing this review very soon after the game released (about a week or so after) and I've parked it until now, half finished, as I wanted to give a bit of space for the developers to patch up some things and get it firing on all cylinders. We've had two patches so far, and still the AI is a joke. Wet weather is pointless against the computer opponents, and the dry weather awareness of where I am relative to the opposition is still poor. Not PCARS 1 bad, but for me at least still not close to the big hitters in the sim racing world. Over a month from launch day, I would expect this to be rectified and frankly I'm shocked it hasn't been addressed yet, making it very hard for me to want to invest any serious time in the sim. Assetto Corsa took a long time to get offline right, but that wasn't too much of a pain as the online stability was pretty rock solid, and more importantly the actual experience of driving the car was first rate, making hot lapping and just simply enjoying the driving experience of the different cars a pleasure, sadly for me at least PCARS 2 doesn't give the same level of driving thrill, it just feels canned and not really an "organic" driving experience. Open up your mind a little and AC or rF2 etc can feel like driving the real thing, PCARS 2 feels like a game. In my experience at least..

Moving to the online portion of the title is where my experience very dramatically drops off, as the events I've ventured into have all pretty much ended in various levels of frustration and disaster. Netcode has been poor at best, with plenty of lagging and cars floating or spawning at random all over the place. I suspect this has been improved since my last try, but frankly I've not got enough inclination to fire it up and have another bash, so this element of the sim will have to wait a while until further updates are released to entice me back to the game again.

Project CARS 2 Review 3.jpg

Now I'm aware that my opinions are probably going to be quite polarising in the community and probably come across a bit harsh, this isn't intended and saddens me to write them. I really, really, really wanted this to be good, and honestly the basics are in place for a very solid racing game. What has probably caused me the biggest disappointment is how I fell for the hype once again, having been promised something that would blow me away and having eventually just sat through what was eventually a light breeze. It feels like I've been promised the best Ferrari in the world, and eventually had a top of the range Fiat Punto delivered. Nothing wrong with the Punto, actually its a rather nice car, but when one expected a brand new 700bhp Ferrari on the drive and looking out over a nearly new Punto just fills you full of disappointment at what could of been.

Project CARS 2 claimed to be "redefining the genre of sim racing" prior to release, and having sunk plenty of hours into getting under the skin of the new title I can say one thing for sure: despite having quite a few compelling positives if you look hard enough at the game, if this is the new definition of sim racing then I'm not entirely sure I want to stick around for much longer.

You need to play the game first before defending it and as it's a continuation of project cars 1 it's had plenty of development time, probably more than AC and it's still a mess with most aspects of the game barely working as intended
So you don't agree with anything I have said, but instead your willing to post on something you disagree with, well done mate excellent post. Yet more negativity.
I'm not defending a game I "have" played but I'm willing to give it a chance before I can condemn it. And willing to give it a chance when I do. And I have played it. Like I said in my earlier post I have played the game on my sons system and I also said I didn't own it as of yet. But you would have known that if you took the time to read the posts that are posted here, instead of latching on to one with negative criticising.

Its a shame some of you had pretty bad issues, my number 1 issue with pcars 2 has nothing to do with pcars 2 and its all down to really bad logitech drivers that have got worse since the Windows Fall Creators Update.

I have had issues with the Escort RS1600 Race version which the dev's are fixing based on 1 complaint from me about the cars handling on their forum and a couple on discord. They are also addressing other car issues and some we should see in the next patch and they are also collecting information on cars that handle really badly with the default setup (There is a few ) so they can have their setups adjusted to make them more user friendly as not everyone knows how to setup a car.

I have learnt from my interactions with the dev's they are listening and they are happy to help fix issues and improve the game but we need to provide them with good feedback on what we feel is wrong or good bug reports for any bugs we find as we play.

Project Cars 2 has my number 2 slot for racing sims with Assetto Corsa being number 1 but in a year or so when Project Cars has matured like AC it has the potential to be a really good and highly competitive racing sim and could share the number 1 slot with AC or even take that from them.

Edit...

Also racing in the snow on what ever track is a personal choice and not a valid reason to complain about.

I'm really surprised of your impression on the handling being sub-par to todays sims. I can't quite believe this myself, but I'm having many moments with certain car/track combos that it feels better than what for me is the holy grail of handling , RF2. You can really feel the tire flex / bite and release feeling that I've only ever had on rf2. Bloody marvellous!
So when we have a sim with many bugs but fantastic handling, excellent graphics, career mode, and ranked online play I can forgive the bugs because of the amazing potential. I think this could be the only sim I play in the future!

Hi Paul Jeffrey,
first of all a big thank you for your contribution to sim racing world.
About Project Cars 2: I have read your review and whereas I agree with many of your observations, I totally disagree about the conclusion one can get of not to buy PCars 2.
In fact, since the first time I fired up this sim, I have never been able to come back to play RFactor 2 or Assetto Corsa. They actually reside on my Pc, waiting for input.......
For example, graphics is IMHO an important part of the equation, and if you play RF2 after PC2 you suddenly dive into past.....
I cant' say nothing about multiplayer (I don' t make use of this feature) but regarding the other aspects IMHO PC2 is almost at the same level of the other two rivals.
And there is a more important thing to consider: some PC2 features are simply not provided by other two sims.
Once you have done a race in Algarve with live track feature shining you simply want, you really need, to start another race.
There are many bugs, quality is very going up and down when you change car or track, but I am happy with PC2 and I am confident the team is going to refine the work.
Best regards !

I agree with some of the points in your review and certain things should not have even appeared in the release version like the setup saving bug and unbalanced AI difficulty levels. I also agree that the game does require a fair amount of tweaking to get the best out of it.

Those and some other issues aside I think the game has tremendous potential. The graphics are easily a step up from the other sims, the dynamic weather works well and some of the cars offer a great driving experience. At times it can lean toward simcade, at others it is IMO one of the best sim games out there.

I didn't buy Pcars 1 and Pcars2 was not on my radar until after its release so I bought it with my eyes open. I don't regret buying it, despite all of its flaws it just has a little something to many of the cars that makes me do one more lap. I have lost count of my laps in the Indycar at Long Beach for example. The Astra TC1 car at Brands Hatch is another favourite, balancing the oversteer with the throttle in the long corners is a joy. And take a spin in an LMP2 car at Daytona at night and see what you think.

Huh? so you want people to post positve things about all the bugs and issues with the game? oh ok then....I absolutely love the set up saving bug and the dreadful AI is brilliant and please, please can you make the online play more buggy cause I love it so much, oh and the shimmering on most tracks looks great...top job SMS looking forward to find more bugs...thank you!!

Seriously mate are you for real? Or have you just come here for an argument. You should try being more positive instead of being childish.
I'm simply saying why is there so much negativity on something it's, which I would consider new ish. This game has massive content which put other Sims to shame but I also feel because of that they've neglected on getting things right. I accept there is problems and I'm concerned but like I said several times I'm willing to give it a chance that's what I call being positive on an outlook. And if that's not fixed it will be it's downfall, that in my opinion goes without saying.

It would be interesting to see, Paul, how your other settings look. I notice you say that you set the AI to 105%. Why? When I hear from other 'Sim' players it always seems to be the same: Set the AI to max, tune your car so that you can drive it as fast as possible. Sorry, but this is not realistic. So many 'Sim' players seem to assume that this is closest to reality. I don't believe it is. Been there. Done that. Then watched the replay and it looks like the your watching it on Fast Forward. It looks silly and unrealistic. Yet, most seem to just want to be as fast as possible with the challenge as high as possible. I challenge you: Set your car to NO downforce front and rear. Run HARD tires, in the dry. Set the AI challenge to something that seems ridiculously easy. Now have a go. I think you will find that this puts 'Sim Racing" in a whole new level of realism. To me the cars drive WAY more realistically and with the AI challenge much lower, so do they. Might sound crazy, but I've been playing 'Sims' this way for a long time and it's a whole new world. In fact, I need to add that the whole experience is so much fun, it's amazing. And on top of it I'm amazed how much it feels like AC when it's set up this way except now with all the added features. :) Just my 2 cents. Thanks.

Issues the game has, be it handling, steering input, AI etc

You cannot gloss over some things that are crucial and should have been addressed since the first title.
Those that make excuses, that other games have AI issues etc does not somehow make it okay that we as consumers should have to accept titles shipping out on release with so many issues, bugs or game ruining elements.

The whole patch it later attitude knowing the title has problems yet paying pro drivers to do commercials and PR selling to us on how amazing the title is going to be is wrong. Its taking us as MUGS and its exactly why so many after what they said and what they came out with in P Cars 1 were not convinced.

I wonder if P Cars 3 will be announced in a couple of months?
Or will they put more focus and effort into fixing and growing P Cars 2?

I would expect the AI to vary quite a bit from track to track and in certain cars as well. Also as Paul mentioned depending on race conditions.

Those that do have the game should point out good examples in cars/tracks, conditions in which the AI seem at their best. Yet Paul clearly gave a report on what he found whilst playing and settings he used.

I still don't own the game, but I think this could be helpful for all of us:

Why don't we create a Racedepartment dedicated thread on Project CARS official forum, to show them how much the community is involved to help them addressing the issues we find in the sim?
We create here on RD a list of all the issues we think are a dealbreaker, in a detailed way, and once we are done, we post them there. I think this is much more useful than yelling in the wind here about the issues of this game.

I see several YouTube videos where people actually feels a good feedback from the cars and some of them, like Extra Mile, describe with plenty of details the behavior of the cars he drives. So there's something weird if some people doesn't feel the FFB at all and others do feel it.

I own rFactor 2 and AC and I was part of the WMD community during PCARS1 development, so for me rather than being a fanboy is more important to have real competition among the sims, so we can all benefit from it. If a community thread can help somehow PCARS2 to improve, I'd be happy.

You almost explode. :)

Well, I agree with most of the review. The AI probably the biggest reason to feel disappointed about this game, however with some tweaking you are able to make some good races. In general I like this game, however as GT3, Group C, modern LM prototype and motorsport fan I think that currently we do not have any complete car racing experience on the market regardless of it's arcade or sim category.
rFactor 2 lacks quality content and variety and the graphics are still a bit ugly (don't get me wrong, I do understand that it has never been a main priority) but comes with great physics and driving experience.
Assetto Corsa is completely missing a decent day/night and weather system and it also feels a bit unfinished.
Project CARS 2's AI is still disappointing, however I think they nailed the rest of the things that they needed to improve. In general however I do understand why people do not like this game.
Forza Motorsport 7 comes with an annoying micro transaction system, loot boxing and despite of it's 'Motorsport' title and wide variety of vehicles it completely lacks the latest GT3 cars for example.
Despite of it's age and really ugly graphics and some really old fashioned game mechanics, probably rFactor 1 was the game that gave me the most in terms of fun, when I sat down in front of my PC to take a race car for a spin but of course I will stay open for any new game experience, that comes up.
The lucky thing is that we have a lot of title to choose from and everyone can spend a few hours with his/her favorite game.

Its funny I have really been enjoying PCars 2, for a sim that has only been out for a month I personally think that it is a great foundation for a fantastic sim. I am sure that RF2, AC, IRacing just to name a few, have taken a number of years to get to an acceptable level, and lets be honest, the interface and VR in RF2 still sucks, although the gameplay is amazing. AC's ridiculous server setup function to get online races happening is pretty backwards not being able to change event parameters as easy as PCars 1 and 2. and as for iRacing it has been years in development and they have collected tonnes of data from drivers all around the world you think they could use that to have some sort of training/career offline mode where you could hone your skills agains the best drivers, and for the investment in iRacing all you really get is fair weather racing. Don't get me wrong the other titles I have mentioned are great but I personally like PC2 and am willing to give it a chance to shine, like I have the rest of the sims. I really don't think the Dev's set out to make a bad product, the Slightly Mad / WMD team seem like they are committed to the franchise and making it work, just like the others. I just love this hobby and anything new and innovative will push all the devs at all the sim works, and that can only be good for us.

I suspect this has been improved since my last try, but frankly I've not got enough inclination to fire it up and have another bash, so this element of the sim will have to wait a while until further updates are released to entice me back to the game again.

Nothing wrong with the Punto, actually its a rather nice car, but when one expected a brand new 700bhp Ferrari on the drive and looking out over a nearly new Punto just feels you full of disappointment at what could have been.

Thanks for this awesome review, this whole thing sums up my whole battlescarred experiences with the Pcars series.... it’s a real shame because the idea was platinum calibre, the execution was rusty nail ...

I so wanted the love it and make it my console sim of choice but it’s impossible to love a game because it had good intentions....

Keep up the good work
