Being at the back of the G2 Pre-Qualy list didn't really boost my confidence, but the overall result of the event is much better than I had expected, even though I managed to screw up badly in race 2.
Qualy: Couldn't get it straight. Istanbul is nowhere near my list of favorite tracks and I failed to force a one-shot good laptime as I can on tracks that are on the list. I hadn't expected a good gridposition, but I had actually taken for granted that I would hit a 2.03 high. None of that today... 2.04.2, or something similar, put me at the back of the grid: 15/19. Nothing to be excited about. Oh well, it's just qualy and that's not where the points are. So I focussed on the race and that paid off.
Race 1: Odds were looking good as I expected my BMW to smoke the FWD's in front of me, but I managed to screw up a little. I still shot away slightly faster, but not enough to immediately win places. So it was time to back down and survive the first lap. I managed to find found the open spots all around and kept out of trouble. I was on P9 soon and I spent most of the race closing a 3-second gap to the points.
It was about attrition again. I knew my tyres would last and because I had a pretty clean run I could really focus on my lines and on driving efficiently. IN front of me, smoke arose multiple times and it was clear that the guys up there were running through their tyres more than I was. In the end it payed off as Pirro and Jari caused an incident of which I profited.
I was now 8th and shortly after I was 7th, though I fail to remember ever passing anyone for that position. I stuck to it and took the 2nd gridspot for Race 2, next to K. Larsson (don't remember which of the two, sorry), who had been checking my whereabouts through all of Race 1.
Race 2: My Beemer on the front row with a Chevy next to it... Things were surely looking good! I took a 0.7 gap right from the start and managed to stay first throughout the first 4 or 5 laps.
Driving first... that's was long time ago... pressure, pressure, pressure. It got hold of me and I started to make small mistakes. Soon Larsson was stalking my rear and put his Race 1 sutdy of my bumper to full use. Nice driving lad! I've got nothing on it, but respect.
More mistakes followed and not long after I got passed by other drivers. When I was about to get back on top of things I jumped over. I hit the curbs at the end of sector 1 and spun. So long for the good result. I got back in 14th and a lap later I spun again. My race was now truly screwed... From first to last in just 3 laps, or so... I definitely need to work on that.
Ow well, the race ended with two laps of battling over the last two positions with Bob and I liked that. Sorry Bob for the immensely stupid manouvre in the last lap. I'm happyy I didn't hit you. Good fight!
Q: 15
R1: 7
R2: 16th or 17th
Not bad, though I should have taken much more from that second race. Better luck next time! I'll see you guys on Zandvoort. Gotta miss my Valencia (one of my favs) for V-WTCC.
I loved the action again.
