Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

I was brought in by most simcade titles before going to sims
First when i see a GT5 video driving an F10 in Nords
Forza Motorsport 4 when i first play it in an LG TV exhibition
Then I found rFactor when searching for games to fit my pc (didn't have a console cuz my parent said it's "nonsense")
Since it's too hard so i looking for something easier to learn ==> Sports Car GT
I reminds me how great EA was in their old times with sims

It was definitely rFactor and Nascar Racing 2003 Season. I was already a huge Gran Turismo player (and a ton of other racing games), but I was looking for something more. It was around 2007 that I decided to try rFactor, and after a friend's dad recommended I try a few mods, I was hooked... permanently. Luckily I already had a DFGT, but up until that point, I had no idea how much in was missing in terms of it's functionality. Though I played GTR2, GSCE, etc. I always went back to rF1. All the way up until AC came out. rF1 was still my main sim, but lately AC has taken the reigns. As of last year rF1 has been off of my drive, as well as NR2003, and GTR2, to save space. Well, as of yesterday I regretted the decision and I'm currently reinstalling rFactor right now. Nothing will replicate the feeling of a full race with a full grid of group 5 cars in almost complete historical accuracy.

Back when we used to Lan Party
EA Sports V8 Challenge PC came out 2002 or 2004 and every thursday night we'll fill the internet cafe out and have a V8 supercar series every team had 2 drivers and 2 car's so could do basic setup's was really my shoe in to Mutiplayer sim racing after that Best days of Sim Racing in my life back then :D

First it was REVES on C64 and Test Drive. Then on PC, Indianapolis 500, Sport Car GT, Gran Prix 4 and GT Legends (with these 3 I bought my first Thrumaster wheel).

IndyCar Racing and IndyCar Racing II were the first ever, Grand Prix Legends was the first with a wheel, but GT Legends sealed the deal. After my several years long hiatus Assetto Corsa brought me back.
Same here, but I never took any time off. When GP2 came out, it was a complete game changer and I've been hooked since I was 30.

Ignoring all the arcade games. My first real racing started with GPL. I actually bought the game as soon as I saw it on the shelf. Took me probably a year to get a usable computer and wheel before I started playing it.

The very first was probably Grand Prix Circuit on CPC. Then F1 GP (Microprose) and Indy 500 on PC, then Indycar and Nascar Racing, the softs by Papyrus. Then the second opus of Indy and Nascar, then Grand Prix II by Microprose... Should I go on ?

First sim I ever played was Indy 500 back in the day. I was glued to it for some time, but it didn't last (I was a kid).

Dabbled with a good number of simcades over the following couple decades, but really got sucked into Forza 3/4. Picked up a cheap Xbox 360 FFB wheel and it was like a fire had been lit. Discovered GTR2 on Steam, ordered a PC adapter for my wheel, and I was off and running. Had a G27 and was an iRacing member just a couple weeks later!

assetto corsa after watch a youtube video from a F1 livery mod, at that time the game was in ea

Early arcade days - Night Driver, Sprint 2, Monaco GP, and Pole Position. Cemented my love of motorsport long before I could drive.

SPorts Car GT or better known as SCGT. No multiplqayer but a good chat room with a very young Tommy Milner of Corvette fame.

the OG Gran turismo and Forza are what got me into "realistic" racing.. Game stock car is what transformed me into a sim racer

GP4 was my first racing sim, but I was really blown away by rFactor and its many mods, be it for major competitions like F1 or V8 supercars or lesser series like Champ/Indycar, the Carrera cup, or Aussie Racing Cars.
