Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

haha, great thread. My first title was Chequered Flag on the Spectrum. Having played this so much as a kid, it's the reason I can find some level of enjoyment in almost any driving game.

Other game changers (for me) along the way were Test Drive, Grand Prix Circuit, Geoff Crammonds GP, Indy500, Colin McRae Rally, Gran Turismo, GPL, E-Racer, GTR1, TOCA 3, Richard Burns Rally, GTR2. GTR2 was the hallelujah moment. It changed everything.

Gtr2 was and still is sooo good and complete! I love it and I will always find myself coming back to it with the gt legends and lemans classic mod re enacting ford vs ferrari on all sorts of mod tracks. I wish ppl still made new mods for it!

I rember very weel getting hooked on cars, sims and car games on my PS1 with RidgeRacer and a steering wheel (thrustamster ferrari something or other). A complete new world unfolded infront of my eyes and has never been the same since.

Other moments/games that marked me as much.

  • Gran Turismo (think it was 2)
  • Project Gotham (metropolis street racer) (specially nº 2)
  • Forza (think it was 2)

So... aparently there's something special with the nº2 :)

The question was "which sim" and people are listing their favourite arcade games, this is why there's no point asking these questions, people can't read or are simply ignorant.

That definitely has to be REVS+ from 1986 on Datasette for the Commodore 64.

There have been many racing games before and after REVS+ in the early days of the personal computer, but REVS+ was the first to have this no nonsense approach to racing, it was the first "sim" so to speak.

The other "sim" milestones before AC, for me, have been Grand Prix Legends in 1998, and Life for Speed in the early 2000s.

I'm 22 years old and I always lags behind a console generation weirdly. My first ever video game is the og Gran Turismo that I love playing with my brother. And when I get the Gran Turismo 2, I know I'm in love with cars and motorsport for the rest of my life. And since then I've played every Gran Turismo.

Yet, it's not until this year I get my first steering wheel and get into the full sim racing world. And I've only played two sim racing title, namely AC and Race 07.

Just to point out, great screenshot used for this thread. We worked on these cars for rF2. I remain working on them privately for my own pleasure. 60s - best decade of motorracing in terms of how exciting it was, and how natural and beautiful the cars were.

Back in the 1990s........on a screaming hot 486DX-2/66..........IndyCar Racing. Then IndyCar Racing 2, NASCAR Racing 1, 2, 3 and 2003 Season.

Then GTR, GTR2, GrandPrix Legends, GT Legends, rFactor 1 and 2 etc etc etc

Still have all of them and even a Windows XP retro machine to play the old stuff on.

I designed my first liveries on these papyrus games. I remember myself buying Motorsports magazines, and using them to be able to update NR1 fictional cars to real season 94 entries....

Initially GT on the PlayStation got me into a proper racing game with the need to drive realistically.

But after that I would say GTR and GT Legends, I played GT Legends online for years, it was a magnificent way into early simming, quick servers, great people,

Then onto Race07 where I realised I was not half bad at it, then Rfactor and that was the pinnacle.

Since then it has become more expensive, more them and us.

In the titles I mentioned, however I have forgotten one essential (first on Atari ST then on Amiga 500): Vroom from Lankhor (usually known for their adventure games)
