Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

Indianapolis 500: The Simulation.

The Christmas of 1989, all I wanted was a Nintendo. Prayed, begged, pleaded. However, it wasn't meant to be. My mom told me that instead of that (probably because of finances but I'd never be told thats why) she took me to a Babbages (which became EB Games then GameStop) and said I could have any PC game I wanted. The box instantly drew me to it with the big ole Yellow Submarine on it and voila! My sim racing addiction was born. Can't believe it's been so long. Both of my parents have left this world now but boy am I ever glad I didn't get that Nintendo after all!

I've always loved racing games it all started with Cruis'n on the Wii to Need for Speed, as i got older my interest changes and I got a lot into sim racing after getting Assetto Corsa for PC in college, that's when i got into sim racing

I am myself a big Gran Turismo fan and bought a wheel after GT4 came out but I REALLY HATE the euros versions because of their musics. I never understood why they changed every tracks, the lounge music in menus was spot on and I feel sad for those who never heard the original soundtrack, especially the intros.
I discovered the serie with import games (japanese versions months before it hit Europe) and the main theme "moon over the castle" remixed for every opus still gives me goosebumps:

Gran Turismo 2, or F1 2002 / F1 Challenge 1999-2002. I can't remember which I played first, or if it was around the same time. My first ever racing 'sim' though was Need for Speed.

Well the first racing game I likely had was 3D Grand Prix on Amastrad CPC:

On PC it would have been Grand Prix Circuit and Lombard RAC Rally on a tiny Compaq green screen portable PC that my Dad had. After that would be Formula one Grand Prix then IndyCar Racing.

REVS on the C64 - it was identical to the BBC micro version shown below

By Geoff Crammond, it was the precursor to the famous Grand Prix series.

Education and work got in the way thereafter, but I picked up sim racing again with the original F1 game for the PS1

And then followed a game that needs no introduction - Gran Turismo.

Original Gran Turismo intro, still my fav intro to any racing sim/game. Gets me pumped every time.

My first racing sim was Grand Prix Circuit on the Commodore 64. But the grand daddy for me was GPL!

First driving game I played a lot was probably NFS2 SE, and GT and GT2 I think.

First sim I played more seriously was probably EA's F1 2001.

As a kid I always wanted to experience what it's like to drive unobtainable cars, and as I grew older I wanted more and more realism and immersion. So I went through a lot of titles, with a keyboard, older NFS like Porsche Unleashed, ToCA 2 and F1 2002. And when I got my first racing wheel for christmas (with no actual FFB, just vibration) I started to sink hours into titles like Test Drive Unlimited and ToCA Racedriver 3. I was still on the arcade side of things, but started to experiment with RACE 07 cause I always fancied touring cars and WTCC was something I just started following, especially after Michelisz joined the grid. So I would say RACE 07 was my first sim that I played with a wheel but that wasn't what got me hooked. By the time NFS Shift came out I had a Logitech MOMO Racing upgrade and that game was a blast for me. The chance to drive my favourite cars at that time, like the Supra, the Skyline, the EVO X or the Cossie with "realistic" physics on the Nordschleife in pure eye candy was something I was longing for ever since I heard about Gran Turismo (never had a PS or any other console, only PC since 2001). Yeah, I was young, I didn't know better, but at that time it ticked the boxes. Those two bastard Need For Speeds were the gateway drug, I knew something was off with the physics after a while, so I started to look for some mods to make it moar real on the old NoGrip Racing boards. But around 2013 a certain racing sim came out on early access, with realism I haven't experienced up until that point, and it completely changed my world around. Trying to drive a perfect clean lap on Magione in the Abarth 500 with a twitchy MOMO steering wheel*, I'd say that was the actual point when I became a sim racer.

*The MOMO had a rotation of 270° while AC simulated the full 900°, so in order to make it drivable I had to change the steering sensitivity in config to 50% which still made the in game wheel turn a good 540° lock-to-lock but at least it was manageable. Fun times.

Forza Motorsport. I played the stuffing out of that game, well after the original Xbox stopped being supported.

Gran Turismo 1,2,3and 4,Test Drive 6, Jarett and Labonte Stock Car Racing, GTR2,Race 07
and lastly Assetto Corsa

MotoRacer on my Pentium PC with Voodoo GFX card. Ripper! Then Grand Prix 2. Using a joystick was just not working, so I shelled out for the Act-Labs FFB wheel and pedals. Then Grand Prix Legends and GP3......many hours of my life gone after that.

In short, in order: 1-Pole Position (Atari) 2-Super Monaco GP (Sega MegaDrive) 3-Indianapolis 500 (EA/MS-DOS) 4-Grand Prix 1 (Microprose By G.Crammond ), 2, 3, 4 5-IndyCar Racing 1 (Papyrus) and 2 6-Nascar Racing (Papyrus) 7-GPLegends (Papyrus) 8-International Rally Championship (Magnetic Fields).... 9-Colin McRae (Codemasters) and the sequels... 10-TOCA Touring Car (Codemasters) and the sequels 11-F1 2000 (EA Sports)... And so many others later, until today...

I'll try to not be too long winded here. The first game that got me hooked was in the late 80s/early 90s called stunts. Followed by Bill Elliot,s nascar. But shortly after in the midst of a life changing event, I didn't touch a computer for something like 8 years!?! Then when the iPhone came out I got addicted to a game called real racing. A while later My phone died and I was considering an iPad, a friend suggested I get a computer instead and try GTR2. That was the title that totally sucked me in. I got up at 4am so I could race online in European leagues. As I live in Hawaii, that was the only time that worked for me. I have almost all the currently available titles, but spend most of my time in raceroom and rFactor. I try to get some racing in daily and in fact still have GTR2 on my computer, and play quite regularly as it is still one of my favorite sims.
