Which Racing Title Got You Into Sim Racing?

First Racing Sim 01.jpg
There's no standard path into sim racing, and we want to hear about your entry point into our niche hobby.

Ask around your favourite sim communities, and you will hear a variety of stories on how people got into the hobby of sim racing.

Depending on your age, you might cite titles like Gran Turismo 1, Grand Prix Legends, GTR2 or Grand Prix 4 as entry points into the sim world. Or perhaps newer titles like Gran Turismo Sport, iRacing or Assetto Corsa.

Each of the aforementioned sims likely offered something different than most of us had tried in a racing title before. Each demanded more of us as players than their contemporary racing games, eschewing the format of simply using a more powerful car to win a race in favour of a requirement for intelligent driving and an understanding of the mechanics and physics of the car.

Many of us were simultaneously humbled and fascinated by the experience in these titles. The humility of knowing that you need to improve as a driver in order to win races is coupled with the fascinating and often addictive nature of knowing that those improvements will be answered with rewards on the virtual track. The onus often shifts from the capabilities of the car to the skillset and knowledge of the driver.

Or perhaps it was the appeal of being immersed into a motorsport series rather than chucking a series of supercars around fantasy circuits. The challenge of trying to match the accomplishments our real world racing heroes is also a common reason to dive into sim racing.

So, what game title brought you into the world of sim racing? What was the first racing sim you played, or the one that sparked a new passion for you? Let us know in the comments.

GPL without a doubt. Ferrari 312 and the Nordschleife, took me almost 2 years to finish my first lap without leaving the track.

For me it was GTR and Richard Burns Rally. RBR is still my favourite sim, thanks to new NGP physics and loads of stages, great game!

I have fought through the whole threadt and my summary so far is:

By many of the "older" folks the Grand Prix Series by Geoff Crammond was named very often.
He will never read this but " Thank you Geoff Crammond !! :)

The "younger sim generation" was often infected by the simbin titles, whila also a lot of guys (young or old) came from some console game. Which is kinda suprising for me.

For me it was getting an Oculus CV1; then I bought Assetto Corsa and a Logitech Wheel, got hooked, then bought all the DLC, then PCars, then PCars2, then a Thrustmaster Wheel, then Dirt Rally, the a Motion Platform, then a Samsung Odyssey+, then RRE and all the DLC, then a buttkicker, then RF2 and all the DLC, then Dirt Rally2, then AMS2, then a HP Reverb G2, then a Fanatec CSW2.5...

My first console was a PS1, I had many games like Gran Turismo, Toca, Driver61, shooters and adventure games, but the one I always came back to was racing games and mostly Gran Turismo.
This evolved through the nack of time and consoles. PS2, PS3. With Gran Turismo 4 I got a steering wheel and With Gran Turismo 5 Prologue I found out there was an online community.

So coming back to the question, the racing title that really got me hooked was Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, completed with clean and fair community based racing.

I was always into racing games but my first simulator was raceroom, then i also played dirt rally on my brothers pc. the first game i spent a lot of time on was project cars 2. it might not be the best but it was pretty good to me because of alle the content it offered.

The question was "which sim" and people are listing their favourite arcade games, this is why there's no point asking these questions, people can't read or are simply ignorant.

Any game, arcade included, is a simulation. You can argue about the quality of the physics modeling, but indeed they are all sims. Be it Daytona USA, Ridge Racer, or Pole Position, they all simulate driving and racing.

VR got me into sim racing.

Dirt Rally 1.0 set the hook
I got a lot of other titles that did nothing for me.
Then I got iRacing and that pulled me in.

I've never been a "gamer". I have no consoles and play ZERO 2D games.
