Three Weeks Until Release - What's Up With Le Mans Ultimate?

Le Mans Ultimate is set to release on February 20. Three weeks ahead of its launch, we still have not really seen much of the title – what’s up with LMU?

Full dedication to the 2023 WEC season, including all cars and tracks – the prospect of Le Mans Ultimate was met with excitement from many sim racers. Admittedly, we cannot wait to get our hands on LMU ourselves here at RaceDepartment. The different design approaches for the Hypercar class alongside the outgoing GTE class are definitely something to look forward to. Make no mistake: We would love to see the upcoming WEC title be a great endurance simulator.

However, just three weeks ahead of the planned Le Mans Ultimate release, we have not really seen all that much of it. The most recent update gave us a preview of the Toyota GR010 Hybrid running at Portimão, although the video notably does not show any of the car’s interior.

Le Mans Ultimate Release: Some Content Still Not Shown

The Toyota preview makes the Cadillac V-Series.R and the Glickenhaus SCG 007 LMH the only two prototypes we have not seen ahead of the Le Mans Ultimate release. There are more vehicles that are still unseen as of the time of writing this article. Three GTE competitors in the Corvette C8.R, the Porsche 911 RSR-19 and the Aston Martin Vantage AMR are still to be unveiled. Additionally, three tracks of the seven-race calendar are also still under wraps, those being Sebring, Fuji and Bahrain.

Meanwhile, the fact that the entry for VR support was removed from Le Mans Ultimate‘s Steam page puzzled the community. The entry was still there as of early November 2023, but has since disappeared without comment. The game engine, which is rooted in that of rFactor 2, definitely supports VR, as rF2 also features the functionality, so it is unlikely that it was scrapped for good – we hope.

Meanwhile, with just three weeks until the release of Le Mans Ultimate, you would expect more promotion leading up to the big day. However, it is still relatively sporadic, with the Toyota preview being almost two weeks old at the time of writing this article. Of course, this could also just be a sign that work on the game itself is full steam ahead, with capacities bundled for this purpose rather than for PR.

Hardly Any Hands-On Experience

We have reached out to Motorsport Games for more insight, but have not heard back as of yet. Thus far, the only playable version of LMU was presented at the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours, at which Angus took a closer look for us. Of course, this was relatively early in development, seeing how the real 24 Hours took place in June.

Note that proper gameplay also has not been shown since, with one exception. As part of the presentation of the Ferrari 499P, the game’s YouTube channel showed an onboard lap around Monza, although without any HUD or other cars present.

As a result, there are a few questions we and the community are wondering about ahead of the Le Mans Ultimate release. What is the state of the content that has not been shown yet? Will VR support be included after all? What features will be on board at launch?

Le Mans Ultimate Release: Patience Is Key

Again, we want to reiterate that the OverTake/RaceDepartment team is indeed looking forward to Le Mans Ultimate and hope for it to turn out great. Studio 397 knows how to create a great driving experience, as they have shown in rFactor 2. A fully-licensed WEC sim based on that model would surely be something any sim racer should take a closer look at.

Of course, it is also very much possible that the news cycle for LMU kicks into overdrive just after we publish this article – which would also be good to see. But just as in endurance racing itself, patience is key ahead of the Le Mans Ultimate release.

And the strangest thing of all is: if you ping a dev on Discord and ask in a friendly way why VR is removed from the Steam page, they threaten to ban you without answering why it's removed from Steam.

So to me motorsportgames deserves their stock pricing going from 326,60 to 2,44 USD (-99.19%).

They don't give a **** about their customers. Companies that behave like this will never survive in the long run.

So I completely lost hope for this title.
ofc reiza is now the new king of motorsport simulator not S397 and motorsportgames

No VR is news to me.... disappointing.

Still waiting for Rennsport to show some VR support............

If not , we still have plenty of options to keep us going.... Kunos AC 2 pls don't let us down!
I think Rennsport are waiting for the VR support for Unreal5 to come along. Can't remember the name, but I think there is a specific framework they are waiting on.
I hope LMU gets VR support, VR in RF2 is pretty decent so I don't see why not. In the meantime, I am having a lot of fun on the LMDH AMS2 gave us, with the latest tweaks they have done they feel pretty great IMO.

lmu I THINK will use same engine as rfactor 2 so its must have VR support since rf2 support it

I really want this to be good. MSG sucks, but I try to think of them apart from S397. I really appreciate all the work they've put into RF2 over the years. I just hope LMU is able to take the good attributes of RF2 and leave the clunkiness and bugs behind - but I'm skeptical.

I don't want to get into the "best sim" argument, it gets beaten to death every time an article about any of them gets posted. They all have their pros and cons. But, for the "RF2 is the best sim ever of all time" crowd... don't get me wrong I have enjoyed a lot of hours in it over the years, but it also infuriates me fairly regularly. If physics and FFB were the only things that mattered, I'd never play anything else. But other things do matter, and it feels like RF2 has been in a "two steps forward, one step back" cycle for a very long time. Consistency over different content is all over the place. It's still progress overall, and come a long way from where it started, but at this point my opinion is that it's a great physics engine buried in what must be some kind of hellscape of coding that can never be fully cured of its other ailments. As end users, we either decide to accept that or not. I'm not an RF2 hater, at times I genuinely love it. Other times, not so much. Oh, and I'm fine with the graphics. I don't care if they're not the best, they're good enough for me.

I haven't followed LMU's development too closely (though it seems there hasn't been much to follow). Do we know if this is "based" on RF2 but some new platform, or is it literally just reskinned RF2 with WEC cars and tracks? My guess is that it's probably the latter, but if it is something new built around elements of RF2... and being more "focused" hopefully allows things to be more controlled and consistent - I could get on board with that. In my "this actually came out great!" fantasy, I'd hope for a future IMSA expansion - many/most of the same car models so in some cases would just be new liveries and tracks (also some of which S397 already has, perhaps subject to some updating). I'm thinking of this not from a "but RF2 already has that" perspective, but if it actually all works seamlessly and consistently. If not... well then there's no point in it for me.

Totally agree with you. Some content in RF2 is off the charts good. BTCC at Donnington park in the morning light is right up there in my top 10 sim racing moments. The porsche cup car as well. But its all over the place content wise ( mind you, so is iRacing, some of the older cars and tracks are awful and not at all in the same ballpark as the newer content ). AMS2 may not reach those heights, but its very consistently excellent across a huge range of content ( now, it didn't use to be ). I'm hoping S397 pull it out of the bag and deliver a focussed, consistent experience.

Yep. rF2 has become solely the BTCC and PCCGB for me (with the very occasional GT3 romp around some random circuit) - and the racing is hugely fun. When I do BTCC it drives home what an utter shame MSG's malfeasance was. It wouldn't have taken much to turn what is already there into a proper BTCC game with some RWD bop, correct race format, and championship season tracking. Too little, too late.

Hope the same will not be said about LMU. :cautious:

At least based on the number of comments there is a huge interest into LMU :)
Buying it in any case, always have had great experience with their products in the past.
