PC Upgrading Discussion

Nice to see the price of Blu-Ray drives coming down :)

Damians is solid, highly recommend the Corsair PSU, defiantly got with the ATI card.
Case take a look at this coolermaster, I have this one and love it. Half the price of the thermaltake too :)

Do you have a windows disc lying around too? That's another £70 too :)

Currently buying a Blu Ray drive is about as much use as buying a chocolate kettle...

Save £40 on that by getting a normal DVD drive and get a better motherboard

Mobo: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147779

Also, i would recommend 4GB ram and that you use Vista 64 bit to take full use of it. 2GB is a bit pointless now, as 4GB kits are so cheap and everything runs so much better with it.

Ram: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141725

For the price you may aswell spend an extra £13 and get a Q6600 instead of an E8400.

The rest i would stick with what Damien suggested earlier, which can be found below.

Case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/101931

Abdul,
for that sort of dough, I'd recommend Chillblast.com as a good builder of complete PCs if you don't fancy the build-it-yourself route. I work in IT, and the cost of a built (and tested) one was pretty much the same as buying the components with postage costs.

I got a belter of a Pc from them last year for less than your target cost and it's still to find a game that brings it to it's knees, as they can overclock everything during testing and ship it preconfigured.

Just something to think about as an alternative.

Dells suck IMO ... their support and attitude is worse - wouldn't touch em!

Try Scan www.scan.co.uk too ... they do good hardware at good prices

Evesham micros also used to make decent machines - no idea about 'em these days.

A good tip - buy a recent PCPro or similar and thumb through the adverts there ... plus check their A-List if you want an off the shelf machine ...

Just a tip, some of scans prices will be cheaper - but double check against www.overclockers.co.uk and www.ebuyer.com as sometimes scan seem to have high prices on certain items :)

Scan maybe cheaper occasionally but there postage prices suck bug time :(
I would also recommend ebuyer and overclockers.co.uk
but watch out for the postage prices Ebuyer don't charge for postage but Overclockers do

Be careful with Scan, their returns policy makes it difficult if things go wrong.

And if you're going with Vista, get 4gb of ram, no matter if you're using 32 or 64 bit. Vista is a memory hog, and will easily use over a gig at the desktop.

... stand corrected ... my information is a few years old tbh, and my folks live ~20 mins from Scan, so I can nip over and collect or return everything direct from their shop when I am visiting Blighty

Agreed on the 4GB thing ... got 2GB's and plan was always to upgrade to 4 but now desperately need it, especially when running Nordy!

I usually order a bundle, Mobo , cpu etc, but the Case and Mobo is a good place to start.

I normally set the case up, put the CPU on the Mobo before putting the Mobo in the case, Also the memory too, put hdd's in the case, PSU, etc, usually put the GPU in last and make sure all the wires are neat and tidy and the whole system has good air flow.

With that Corsair PSU you will get really nice cables which will make things allot easier with cable managment.

Ordered Case and RAM since it was the only 1 left in stock. Next purchase within a week hopefully is Mobo and PSU. The mission has started. Wish me luck lol. I'll be updating my first post with the progress. I'll try and get pictures and videos of the progress.
