2008 BMW M5 Vs. 2009 Cadillac CTS-V

On the other hand, the BMW M5 has a Naturally Aspirated V10 that has 500hp at 7750 RPM and 383lb-ft of torque at 6100 RPM, with a weight of just 4012lbs. The BMW M5 has been around since 2005, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still draw attention. On the contrary, actually.
Road and Track magazine took the two models to the Monticello Club’s brand new, not yet finished 3.4 mile long track. Bill Auberlen and John Heinricy were the lucky ones to drive the BMW M5 and the Cadillac CTS-V around the track. Who are they? Well, Bill Auberlen is a factory BMW driver and is quite famous for racing the BMW M3 in ALMS, while John Heinricy is head of GM’s performance division and the one who drove the CTS-V around the Ring for its lap record.
Cadillac and BMW teams were there to see how their models do on the tests. The CTS-V was a 6-spd manual and BMW put out an SMG and a 6-spd manual M5. Bill took on the SMG, although he hasn’t been in a BMW M5 for four years. John Heinricy has been the official test driver of the Cadillac CTS-V pretty much from the beginning, but he’s also a factory Chevrolet racing driver.
After some warming up, the CTS-V drove a 2:47:55, while the BMW M5 ran a 2:45:96 after some test laps. But at the end of the day the BMW M5 finishes with a 2:44:70. Before having to rap up the hour long test, the CTS-V got the fastest total lap, racing to 2:44:23.
Seeing as John has been driving the car for a few years now, and Bill hasn’t driven a BMW M5 in four years, with the CTS-V having 56 more hp, 168 more lb-ft of torque and 200lbs heavier and the BMW M5 slightly slower with less, I’d say Cadillac should look out for BMW, as it’s truly a worthy opponent. And let’s not forget that the Cadillac CTS-V also develops its 551lb-ft of torque at 3800 RPM. Meanwhile, BMW M5 goes up to 383lb-ft of torque at 6100 RPM. (from BMWCoop.com)
