The beast without roof

One of the highlights of this weekend’s event at Pebble Beach was the debut of the new Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, the convertible version of the Veyron. The Grand Sport features slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof. As you’d expect in a high-performance car, the main challenge resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. As the roof is an integral part of this, removing it meant the load paths had to be completely redesigned to maintain the vehicle’s rigidity and crash safety, and to offer additional protection from side impacts and rolling. As a result, the monocoque structure has been reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. The B-pillars have been cross-stiffened using a carbon fibre support, and a central carbon plate has been positioned beneath the transmission tunnel to ensure the vehicle suffers from less torsional flexing than any other roadster.

The doors of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport are made of carbon fibre, and house an integrated longitudinal beam. In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine now feature 10-centimetre wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection should the car roll.

When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with roof off. In case rain starts, a folding roof stored in the luggage compartment can be opened up like an umbrella at any time. When this folding roof is in place, the car can travel at up to 130 km/h.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will be available from March 2009 at the price of 1.4 million euros (excluding tax). Just 150 examples will be made, with the first 50 of these going exclusively to registered Bugatti customers, while this first unit will go to the highest bidder at the Pebble Beach charity auction presented by Gooding & Company.

Everyone tends to be a little apprehensive when the JPN car makers are trying to butt their way into age old categories such as the sports sedan market in which we've always had BMW Mercedes and Audi at the top. I am one of those people, while I do respect the abilities of any car as I am truly a fan of cars in every sense of the word I cant help but feel a bit uneasy. That pretty much stems from the way these car makers (ex. Lexus/Toyota Infiniti/Nissan) go about doing this. Their products are always lower priced than the German counter parts and are either on par in performance or a little above or far below.

A prime example was in 2005/6 when BMW came out with the new 3 series and range topper 330i with a 260bhp, or around there, and Infiniti came out with their new G37 S line 306bhp specifically targeting the BMW benchmark. R&T dubbed the new 37 as the new king blah blah blah. Infiniti had loads of time to enter the market, and having the ability to make a much lower priced product given its manufacturing location. However the car does not hold the engineering pedigree the BMW has attainned through numerous awards in that respect. The 335i has won the engine award in its class one or two years running now as is the case with almost every engine that bmw makes.

I guess if I am to explaing all that crap I just talked about in simpler terms it goes something like this, using the wrong words to illustrate a false image in the consumer minds may fool some but not all. Saying the G37 dethroned the 3 series is correct only in some respects and only at the time when the 330i was the range topper, which is not the case anymore. Even then saying what mags said would be like saying Alonso is the greatest champion ever after beating Schumacher in his last season when clearly they were neck in neck had it not been for that unfortunate blown engine. That statement would be inherently false as is the case with most JPN vs GER headlines.

Saying that the G37 doesn't have a rival at its price is very true, saying that it keeps on the BMWs toes is true etc etc. Those are ways to entice ppl like me and also make a believer out of many like me ofcourse. I know that the words/phrase "G37 is the new king" is simply a marketing ploy made to catch headlines and sell mags, it not only rubs me the wrong way but also seems a a blatant lie to get ppl to look the other way. There are more honest ways in doing things but then we are all guilty of doing the same in other ways.

Or maybe this is just the naive little BMW fanboi in me that is enraged an speaking out when his brand is under fire. You chose.

Why just Japanese and German?

If I really had the money for a real high powered sports car it would be either the Z06 Corvette or the Ultima GTR. Both are truly affordable super sports cars. Why settle for less for the same money?

Because they would always be in the shop to get fixed...:)
No really though the corvette is getting better and better, it was pretty crude until about 6 years ago, then they added some handling to go with the horsepower.

How old are you William?

Actually the first and second edition Corvettes were very good handling cars for their day. They gave a lot of European companies nightmares. :)

The C3 and C4 were made to be comfortable sports cars, kinda like what Mercedes does now. :/

With the C5 and C6 Chevy put a lot of effort into getting the handling right, and it's paid off at least in the FIA GT series. :)

Now why should they be in a shop being fixed?
The Corvettes you could easily repair just about anything yourself, and normal maintenance was no problem. The GTR you build yourself so if anything isn't right you've only got yourself to blame. :)
Both of these cars use the small block Chevy motor, which is arguably the best motor in the world, and fully capable of running a million miles without being rebuilt if you regularly do oil changes.

I am 37, My uncle has had many corvettes which I have gotten to ride in from time to time. His 1999 is a lump when compared to the handling of his 05. The shop joke is becuase some Japanese cars are some of the most reliable on the road compared to chevys - that isn't to say that chevy hasn't had some good motors. I realise that there have been great improvements from 1999 - 2005 so of course it should handle better - but my friends 1992 Miata handles great compared to the stock 92 vette. I really don't know much about building cars or the Ultima, but really I was just joking - I have never been a fan of corvettes. :becky: I do like the 06 and 07 models though, they are starting to refine the style and I am really happy the pop up headlights are gone.
Cheers

Yeah I didn't care for the popups either. The C1 and 2 had a little soft suspension but were very easy to make into serious road holding cars. Like you said the C3 and 4 were mostly looks. But now the C5 and especially the C6 are serious sports cars.

Right now I drive a 92 Ford Probe which is also a very good handling car, and cheap. :)

But like I said if I had the bucks for it I'd build me a GTR. :)

Talking about Corvettes the first car that I really got into was the C4 ZR-1, and The Need for Speed SE is to blame for that (spent countless hours on that game). It was a much more refined version of the C4 and Lotus put their hand in on the suspension and chassis if im not mistaken. Its super rare I think, also the Gran Sport C4 was quite nice too. The new Vettes really speak for themselves, there's really no better bang for your buck unless you count the Nissan GTR, great cars all of them each with a diff character.

Ugh by the looks of the steering wheel the car is not much to look at, good thing this nice/hot woman decided to help its cause :p.

EDIT: I did not click on the picture and thus I'll just leave nice woman and skip the hot part.
