Update: More images of VW’s 300HP Scirocco race car

VW_Scirocco_race_main2.jpg

Updated with new spy images.
Last month we first heard that Volkswagen would enter its Scirocco coupe in the annual 24-Hour Race at the Nurburgring later this month and now we have the first image of the new 300hp racer. VW will in fact have three factory-developed racing versions of the Scirocco with two-time Le Mans winner Hans-Joachim Stuck and two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz among the list of drivers.

Last year VW’s Golf GTI hatch took top honors in its class and the same 300hp 2.0L TFSI engine design from the race winner will be used in this year’s Scirocco race car. The cars also feature DSG gearboxes with shifting paddles on the steering wheel. Speaking at the car’s launch last month, Hans-Joachim Stuck said “the Scirocco is one of the most uncomplicated racing cars” he’s ever driven. Also part of the team is VW board member Dr Ulrich Hackenberg as well as a pair of automotive journalists.
Also competing in this year’s event will be a new hybrid race car based on the Gumpert Apollo supercaras well as pre-production Lexus LFA supercar

First look at ‘Powered by Ferrari’ A1GP race car

a1gp_ferrari_car_MotorAuthority_02.jpg

In October Ferrari signed a deal with the A1GP to supply the series with its Maranello-built race engines and design consultancy services starting from next year’s season through until 2014. Today we get an early look at a computer generated rendering of the new race car designed and built around a Ferrari-sourced V8 engine.

The new car is powered by a 600hp V8 engine and is scheduled to enter shakedown testing in Southern England later this year. The introduction of the new car will be kicked-off with a first drive by A1GP’s own television commentator and F1 legend John Watson.
The chassis is based on the design of the highly successful F2004 chassis but with a number of modifications to meet A1GP regulations. The car’s design, development and production are being overseen by A1GP Technical Director John Travis in Bognor Regis, UK.
Ferrari will also supply engines for a new A2GP series, a new feeder competition that will provide regional exposure for young, prospective drivers who hope to eventually enter the A1 arena.

Baby Porsche Cayenne spied

With all major German car companies launching their small SUVs, Porsche couldn’t afford to stay behind, so here are the latest spy shots of the upcoming baby Cayenne, scheduled to make debut in 2010. Codenamed Roxster (and we really hope they’ll change that), the car will try to match the Cayenne’s success, which revived Porsche back in 2002. And it’s not going to be easy, because the competition is taugh, with the BMW X3 (scheduled to be facelifted soon) and the recents Mercedes Benz GLK and Audi Q5.

Developed on the Q5 platform, the Q5 will will get its own sheetmetal and glasshouse, plus a distinct engine range. To be even more different from the Q5, the Roxster will probably be powered by Porsche’s VR6 engine and the low-end V8, producgin between 300 and 400 hp. Rumors say Porsche is also considering a diesel powerplant and even a hybrid version, in the future.

Questioned by CarMagazine, Porsche’s spokesman said: “It’s our policy not to comment on speculative spy photos […] Porsche Engineering do a lot of work for third parties – it could even be an Audi Q5 on test.”

Mclaren F2 versus SLC Moniker

British engineering powerhouse McLaren is set for a head-on collision with German specialist AMG as the two Mercedes satellite companies go toe-to-toe in the supercar market.

In a world exclusive, Autocar has learned that both McLaren and AMG are developing mid-engined, V8-powered supercars, both of which will appear on the market in 2010, and which will compete as rivals.

This supercar grudge match has been years in the making, flaring up after the controversial gestation of the £240,000 Mercedes McLaren SLR in 2004.

Inside sources say that ever since the launch of the carbon-bodied UK-built machine, AMG has been lobbying Mercedes to be given the chance to build a bespoke supercar for its parent company.

Now, it looks like AMG is going to get that chance, but that won’t stop Brit outfit McLaren forging ahead with its plan for its own, V8-powered alternative

The McLaren is likely to be called the F2, while the AMG version could get the Mercedes SLC moniker – and you can read the latest on both by clicking below.

APS twin turbokit pumps Pontiac G8 to 557hp

The performance bargain that is the Pontiac G8 is very nearly unparalleled in the American market. Eschewing the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ maxim for one more adulation-worthy the tuners at APS have seen fit to improve on an already good thing, increasing the output of the Pontiac G8’s V8 engine to a Cadillac CTS-V rivaling 557hp.

While the Pontiac is not a match for the Cadillac’s smart looks or fine-tuned interior, it is still handsome in its own right, and a great value for money. Toss in APS’s inter-cooled twin turbo kit and you have a real screamer that can probably run with GM’s top sedan for somewhere around half the price.
With power at 557hp, a rise of 196hp over the stock 6.0L V8’s 361hp, it’s hard to argue with the results. Torque is equally massive, at 583lb-ft, and is available across a wide portion of the rev range as is the way of the turbo. The Cadillac gets its power from a supercharged 6.2L LSA V8, itself a detuned variant of the 650hp LS9 in the Corvette ZR-1, while Pontiac’s own G8 GXP gets 402hp from its naturally-aspirated 6.2L LS3 V8.
The G8’s Australian roots show through in the kit, which was actually developed on an Australian-spec vehicle (pictured). The system is engineered to be a simple bolt-on procedure, delivering the massive torque and horsepower gains with a minimum of mechanical fuss.

Batmobile enters production

The Spada Codatronca is the creation of designer Ercole Spada and his son Paolo as well Italian tuning shop UK Garage, and after months of testing the project has now officially entered the production phase. The first model will be the new Codatronca TS (Turismo Sportivo), which features a naturally aspirated V8 engine developing more than 600hp and is capable of reaching a top speed of more than 340km/h.

The car will make its world debut on April 24 at an auto show in Monaco, ahead of a sales launch planned for the middle of the year. Several other models will follow shortly, including a more powerful TSS version (Turismo Super Sportivo) that’s currently under testing.
Key features of the vehicle include an ultra-light structure, efficient aerodynamics and sharp agility. When setting out to design the new Codatronca, Spada’s goal was to create a supercar in the tradition of a true Italian classic. To keep costs low, the Codatronca was designed around the Corvette platform and includes enhanced versions of the powertrain and suspension systems used in the Chevy.
The new supercar will be manufactured in Turin by SpadaVettureSport, a company created and controlled by Spadaconcept in collaboration with a small team of technical, industrial and commercial partners.

Alfa Romeo Mi on the streets

With the Alfa Romeo Mi.To getting closer and closer to launch, we got a few pics of the car, the first interior photo a few days ago and now we have the first photos of the car in the wild. Taken by Biagio, one of Progetto955 readers, these photo show two versions of the Mi.To roaming around Turin. If the red one doesn’t surprise us, the white one is a first. And it looks great. According to the guy who took the photos, the cars were out there on a promotional activity or something, most likely Alfa shooting some cool photos to release later.

New Arden Jaguar XF AJ 21

We’ve seen the new Jaguar XF live at Geneva and we’re very impressed with the car. And about Arden’s latest creation, the AJ 21, what can we say, except that we fell in love with it. It’s simply superb!

jaguar_xf_tuning_arden01.jpg

The body kit features a new front apron with a larger grille and larger air intakes and integrated LED day lights, additional air intakes on the rear rocker panels which help cool the rear brakes, new rear lid spoiler and a marked rear diffuser. All completed by a set of 21″ wheels in Arden “Sportline” design.

Under the bonnet, Arden did a great job also, upgarding all four available engines and the most impressive is, without doubt, the upgrade of the Supercharged 416hp 4.2 liter V8 engine, which got a displacement increase to 4.5 liters and increased power output to over 500 hp.
