2008 Shelby GT500KR gets Ford’s first-ever carbon fiber hood

Shelby_GT500kr_1_c.jpg

Although the Shelby GT500KR is hardly at risk of being taken as an ordinary Mustang - even by the only mildly observant eye - Ford has seen fit to update the car for its 2008 run with a new carbon fiber hood - the first-ever production use of carbon fiber for either Ford or Shelby. The 540hp muscle car matches the output of last year’s 40th anniversary limited edition, and only 1,000 are going to be made.

The new hood looks mean enough, but Ford says it’s only there for go, not for show.
“It’s there purely for performance. It brings important aerodynamic and weight-reduction benefits that translate into enhanced performance for our new King of the Road,” said Ford SVT chief program engineer Jamal Hameedi.
And go it does, helping the King of the Road achieve its 40hp boost over the standard GT500.
The idea behind the hood’s aerodynamics is to create two pressure regions under the hood - scooping air into the intake and sucking hot engine bay air out the back of the hood. This is done in part by the vents at the front and rear of the hood, but also due to the underside structure of the hood, which was made possible by the use of carbon fiber.
The improved airflow and decreased engine bay temperatures help the supercharged car use its intercooler more efficiently, since it is one of the primary contributors to under-hood heat, aside from the engine itself, of course.

Electric-powered superlight sports car from the Netherlands

thorr_electric_main_1.jpg

Soaring fuel costs have thrust the electric car industry into the limelight, with new offerings from Tesla, Fisker[/and Venturi all heating up the electric sports car market. Based around the lightweight chassis of a Lotus Super 7 and a 272hp Siemens electric motor, the new Evisol Thorr roadster should offer a driving experience a little more hardcore than the electric sports carscurrently capturing public attention.

The Siemens electric motor has a continuous output of 91hp but peaks at 272hp with torque of 450Nm coming on from zero rpm. Power comes from a set of lithium polymer batteries, and all up the Evisol Thorr weighs in at just 755kg. Part of the reason for the car’s low weight is the absence of a gearbox, ABS power assisted brakes, power steering and virtually all sound proofing.
The company behind the Evisol Thorr is yet to reveal any performance numbers but claims the car has range of more than 200km on a single charge.
The rest of the car’s mechanical package is the same as you would find in any modern roadster, including a limited slip differential, a tubular frame chassis, adjustable double wishbone suspension both front and back and 15in aluminum wheels shod with Toyo tires.

Renault Laguna GT

Renault announced that the Renault Laguna GT will go on sale thus spring. France will get the car first, starting from April 12 and the rest of Europe by the summer of 2008. The Laguna GT will be available in saloon and estate version and will come with a three-year or 150,000km warranty.

Under the hood, the new Renault Laguna GT will be offered with both petrol and diesel powerplants. The diesel version will be powered by a 2.0 dCi engine, producing 180hp (131kW) at 3,750rpm and peak torque of 400Nm from 2,000rpm. Powered by this engine, the Laguna accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds, has an estimated fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100km and 172 g/km CO2 emissions.

The petrol version is powered by a sport version of the 2.0 liter 16-valve engine, which produces 205hp (150kW) at 5,000rpm and peak torque of 300Nm from 3,000rpm. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is made in 7.8 seconds, the estimated fuel consumption is 8.2 litres/100km and 194 g/km CO2 emissions.

Developed by Renault and Renault Sport Technologies, the Laguna GT uses the Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering. The car is fitted with a sensor on the steering column that sends steering wheel angle information via the CAN network to the 4WD control unit, located behind the rear axle. The 4WD control unit also inputs vehicle speed from the ESP/ABS unit. This makes the car very easy to handle in town and agile on winding roads.

On the exterior, the new Renault Laguna GT looks very sporty, with the long plunging bonnet, new lateral air-intakes, aerodynamic sills, twin tailpipe, gloss black wing mirrors, smoked rear lamps and it rides on Celsium wheels equipped with 225/45 18-inch special Bridgestone Potenza tyres, a Formula One spin-off. On the inside, the Laguna GT is also very sporty, with the exclusive GT logo embossed on the light grey alcantara of the front seatbacks, special three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with grey stitching, cross-drilled aluminium pedal, sports gearshift lever knob, dark charcoal Riviera leather upholstery with reinforced lateral support.

Uh!!! I saw one of those cars in front of me when I was going to school. The back lights are hideous. I didnt get to see the front of it though but looking at the picture it looks quite good. Dont know how its in Northern Ireland already if its not out in the rest of Europe untill the rest of the summer. Imo Its definitely a non-buyer

Rieger Tuning Audi A4

audi_a4_rieger_main.jpg

German based car customizer and bodykit specialist Rieger Tuning has presented a new styling and performance upgrade for the new B8 Audi A4 saloon at this week’s Tuning World Bodensee event in Germany. The Rieger A4 is a saloon redesigned for daily use with a kick and manages to keep the understated good looks of the standard model while also adding a touch of aggression.

This is helped in part by the addition of a new front-lip spoiler, sport side-sills, a custom rear bumper and integrated diffuser plus a set of 20in alloy wheels.
For the mechanical upgrades, engineers chose to focus on improving performance of 3.0L TDI diesel model. Engine output has been increased to a healthy 297hp (up from 240hp in the stocker) and 610Nm of torque, courtesy of a new sports air-filter and stainless steel exhaust plus an ECU upgrade.
Rieger Tuning was founded by Toni Rieger twenty years ago and is based in Eggenfelden, Germany. The tuner is a specialist in creating bodykits for a number of German labels including Mercedes-Benz and BMW as well as Audi.
