Aston V12 Vantage RS

car_photo_253500_25.jpg

There are a dozen reasons to get out of the way of this Aston Martin prototype – it has a V12 engine under the bonnet!

This is the first picture of the production version of the sensational Vantage RS, which was revealed in concept form last December.

The roadgoing model will be powered by the firm’s Le Mans-derived 600bhp V12 powerplant, which will provide sensational performance.

If early claims are delivered, the baby supercar will cover 0-62mph in only four seconds and sprint from 0-100mph in 8.5 seconds.

The engine is packed full of race-bred technology, and comes equipped with a dry sump, tuned exhaust system and heavily modified mechanicals. Expect the chassis to get an extreme set-up to match.

However, only a few lucky customers will get their hands on an RS, because production will be strictly limited when the car goes on sale in the UK later this year.

Alfa MiTo spied

We've already seen the first official shots of the new MiTo, but that doesn't mean the testing is over. Our spies caught this barely disguised version undergoing final development tweaks at the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

Even with the black tape covering the bodywork it is easy to see the influence of the company's 8C Competitzione supercar. At the front is the same bold grille and oval headlamps, while at the rear it gets circular LED lamps.

The stylish Alfa is part of a two-pronged attack on the successful MINI by parent company Fiat. With the funky 500 it has the perfect rivals for lower specification versions of the British-built supermini, while the sporty MiTo will go head-to-head with the powerful Cooper and S models.

By evaluating the newcomer at the Nurburgring it's clear that the Italians company is serious about matching the MINI for driveing fun. The front-wheel drive chassis will feature a hi-tech electronic control system called DNA - Dynamic, Normal and All-weather. This will control the responsive of the throttle, steering, brakes and gearbox to suit different conditions.

Underneath the bonnet will be a range of engines familiar to owners of the Fiat Grande Punto and Bravo. Included will be the turbocharged 1.4-litre T-JET petrol and 1.9-litre JTD oil-burner. Power outputs should range from 90bhp to 155bhp.

Initially the MiTo will be available with a three-door bodyshell, with a five-door arriving shortly after the launch. Company bosses are also considering estate and convertible versions.

Officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September, the first UK versions of the baby Alfa will hit showrooms in January priced from around £12,000.

Porscheplatz: Porsche museum is coming

Porscheplatz%20Porsche%20museum%20dec2007.jpg

As soon as they enter the foyer in the future, visitors to the new museum will gain an initial impression of the fascination that the Porsche brand holds. Besides an information point, restaurant, coffee bar and a museum shop, there will also be the opportunity to have a look at the museum’s workshop for historic Porsche vehicles. Not only will customers’ vehicles be receiving expert attention here, there will also be more than 300 museum vehicles undergoing preparatory work prior to their world-wide appearances as a ‘Rolling Museum’. Because all the exhibits will spend some periods on the road, the appearance of the exhibition at the Porscheplatz, which features some 80 vehicles, will be constantly changing. Porsche fans can therefore discover different rarities each time they make a visit.
Just as the exhibition area itself is based on three supports, the content of the new museum is also based on three underlying principles: the chronologically arranged product history of Porsche creates the structure which guides visitors along their way. In tandem with this, thematic focal points will be created by bringing together exhibits from different periods. These will direct attention to the most important vehicles, the most significant racing classifications and technical innovations developed by Porsche. The link between historical development and the individual thematic arrangements will be created by a variety of small exhibits, which will portray the third principle, i.e. the unmistakable qualities of the brand, the ‘Porsche Idea’. “The open architecture and exhibition concept create great freedom for visitors, in terms of both space and content: While walking around the museum, the visitor can either follow the course of a product’s history or can focus deliberately on particular thematic arrangements,” explains Christina Becker, Overall Project Manager.

Oil industry under fire in Washington

As oil companies rake in record profits and pump prices soar ever higher, Democrats in Washington are asking why the industry is fighting so hard to keep massive tax breaks. The answer - simple supply and demand - seems to fall a bit short. But it’s one thing to see the problem, and another entirely to be able to fix it.

Senior representatives of BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell were recently called in front of a committee on energy independence and global warming to defend their actions. In the face of $55 billion in combined profits, the lawmakers wanted to know why so little had been invested in alternative fuels research and why the companies were working so hard to protect tax breaks amounting to $18 billion. Democrats recently voted to remove the tax breaks, but President Bush has pledged to veto the removal.

The oil company representatives tried to make the case that the tax breaks are necessary to drive investment that could lead to more oil production - from areas protected from drilling for environmental reasons, reports The Guardian. The rationale seems to indicate the companies believe that more supply could help drive down prices, although ExxonMobil’s standalone profits of $40 billion seem to refute that premise - the companies clearly aren’t fighting to remain profitable in the face of stiff competition on price.

Despite its massive profits, ExxonMobil is investing only $100 million in renewable energy research and development. Most of its cohorts are investing similarly small amounts in relationship to their profits. It’s understandable that the oil companies are not keen on finding new ways to make their product obsolete, but on the other hand it’s hard to understand how an industry taking $55 billion to the bank annually could be dependent on tax breaks.

Whether the committee’s review of the situation will result in anything concrete - in terms of lower prices at the pump or increased renewable fuels investment - remains to be seen, however.

GM upgrades OnStar with XM NavTraffic and eNav

GM has upgraded its OnStar monitoring and tracking system with two new navigational services for all 2009 models equipped with the subscription-based service. Working in conjunction with the existing Turn-by-Turn feature, OnStar now comes with a new ‘Destination Download’ service that allows users to have the address of their destination sent directly to their navigation system while still driving.

To initiate the feature, users simply press the OnStar blue button to connect with an advisor. After providing address details, the destination is downloaded to their navigation screen within seconds. The second service, ‘eNav’, allows subscribers who already use the Turn-by-Turn system to find and save destinations on MapQuest.com and have the address details automatically sent to the vehicle.

OnStar Destination Download and eNav will be available on over 80% of GM’s 2009 models, covering 22 different models.

Also available to subscribers with screen-based navigation systems is XM’s NavTraffic real-time traffic information feature. The service feeds road condition data such as accidents, traffic backups and road construction to the navigation screen.

New Seat Ibiza

Sleek lines and an all-new style – SEAT’s new Ibiza supermini has just been revealed.

Shown in five-door form at a special event at the firm’s factory near Barcelona in Spain, the Ford Fiesta rival follows on from the Bocanegra concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Larger than its predecessor, SEAT is describing the fresh faced Ibiza as the most important new model in the firm’s recent history.

car_photo_253704_25.jpg

Penned by ex-Lamborghini stylist Luc Donckerwolke, the hatchback measures 4.05 metres – the old model was 3.97 metres long. As a result it comes with a 292 litre boot, which is the biggest in the class. Some of the hi-tech kit on offer includes a seven-speed DSG sequential manual gearbox and Hill Hold Assist.

Drivers can expect a driving experience to match the best in the class. Company bosses are keen to build on the brand’s sporty image and so have paid particular attention to chassis development. Engineers efforts have been helped by the fact Ibiza is the first model to use parent company VW’s all-new small car platform that will also be used on the next generation Polo.

Hot hatch fans will have to arrive for the arrival of the three-door version. Called the Sport Coupe it is almost identical in look to the rakish Bocanegra concept and will be the basis for scorching FR and Cupra models.

All versions will benefit from the new cabin, which gets a high quality makeover with soft-touch plastics and excellent fit and finish. A team of engineers was drafted in from sister company Audi and they used the A3 premium hatch as a benchmark for build.

It is also packed with technology, featuring an MP3/iPod connection and a universal aftermarket sat-nav dashboard mounting that does away with the usual mess of wires and windscreen suckers.

Buyers will initially have the choice of 1.2-litre three-cylinder or 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engines. Initially just one diesel engine will be fitted, the familiar 105bhp 1.9-litre unit.

Audi planning handfull of 2011 A3 Variants

Audi has pushed back the arrival of its next-gen A3 by one year as it tackles the development of several other all-new models such as the new Q5 SUV and A1 minicar. Originally slated to arrive next year, the next A3 will now hit the market in early 2010, initially in its regular three-door hatch bodystyle and then in cabrio and performance S3 guises. According to a new report Audi is prepping even more A3 models including a compact sedan, A3 Allroad and a sportback hatch.

AUDI_A3_v_2010.jpg

The move is designed to help the new A3 compete with BMW’s 1-series range as well as a family of sporty models based on the next-generation Mercedes B-Class. The 2011 A3’s underpinnings will once again be shared with VW’s Golf, which means Audi’s latest modular platform design has been ruled out. However, compared with the current model, the new A3’s footprint will grow in size and its profile will be a lot sleeker.

Audi’s B8 A4 grew in length by 14cm over its predecessor, positioning it closer to the 5-series and E-Class in terms of size. The gap left behind will be filled by a new A3-based sedan, which Autobild reports will stretch 4.2m in length.
A new cabrio model will once again be offered, featuring an automatic folding soft-top, optional AWD and a roomier cabin than the current car.
Engine options include a series of four-cylinder powerplants ranging from 1.2 to 2.0L in displacement. The base engine will be a 1.2L TFSI with 105hp and 175Nm of torque. This will be followed by a 1.4L TFSI with 125hp and 200Nm of torque and a 1.8L TFSI with 160hp and 250Nm of torque. Rounding out the four-cylinder family will be a 2.0L TFSI with 211hp and 350Nm of torque.

[MOVIE] new exhaut at V8 Pagani

Pagani_Zonda_F_main.jpg

One of the best aspects of Pagani’s Zonda supercar is its AMG-sourced 7.3L V12 powerplant, but with production of the current car expected to end within the next 12 months officials are now looking towards its successor. Previous reports claim the new model, codenamed C9, will sport a smaller and lighter V8 powerplant also sourced from Mercedes-Benz. This has led many to speculate the engine could be the same supercharged unit from the SLR McLaren.

A new video of a Pagani test-mule with a noticeably quieter exhaust system has emerged, showcasing a Zonda without its trademark high-mount quad exhaust tips. Another reason that backs the SLR engine theory is rumors the McLaren-built supercar will be going out of production within a year, however there’s no official word yet from Mercedes-Benz.
