Hiya James, the BMW is very often recommended for a first dabble - seems to be one of the cars with few vices and is easy to drive.... though I'm no expert.

Hope you have fun, you'll find many will help you out here, and often post setups if you ask I don't have one for the Bimmer, but if you go here: http://thesetupmarket.com you might find one to your liking - the website is painfully slow by the way!
