Surprise! A new GRID game is heading our way this September 13th.

Having been heavily focussed on their rally and Formula One games since 2014’s GRID Autosport released, Codemasters have today made the surprise announcement that the popular franchise will be making a return to console and PC this year – confirming GRID 4 is set to release this September on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Featuring the usual mix of real world and fantasy tracks located across four continents, plus plenty of racing content from low power machines to Grand Prix cars, GRID should offer plenty of variety for players of all skill levels when it drops later this year.

Although exact details regarding the depth of content set to ship within the game has yet to be revealed by Codemasters, the British development team have confirmed the inclusion of Formula One machinery, in the form of at the least the 2006 Renault RS06.

With the new title having been developed in conjunction with Fernando Alonso and his eSport racing team, players will have the opportunity to race against the former double World Champion and 2018 Le Mans winner in game, as part of the structured career mode the title is so famous for in previous iterations of the franchise.

“We are also delighted to work alongside Fernando Alonso who is arguably one of the world’s greatest ever drivers” said Chris Smith, GRID Game Director at Codemasters. “His experience and knowledge has enabled us to make improvements to both the performance and handling of our cars. We could not be more proud to have signed him both in-game and as a Race Consultant. We can’t wait for our players to experience the final version when it comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this September.”

As well as the inclusion of Alonso, images revealed from the game also reveal Brands Hatch will be included in the base version of the title, as well as a selection of tin top machines such as a TCR spec VW Golf and various American muscle cars.

GRID is well known as a ‘simcade’ style game, and it looks like the latest release will continue that trend, but with leanings towards simulation in order to appease a wide variety of driving tastes.

“GRID as a racing franchise is revered by our community and we are delighted to bring it to the current generation of consoles,” continued Smith. “The game offers so much variety and depth, from the number of modern and classic cars through to the locations and race options. Renowned for its handling, the game will appeal to all types of player, from casual drivers who want a lean-in challenge, to sim drivers who want some serious fun”

The game is already available to pre-order, and it looks like Codemasters will be adopting the DiRT 2.0 approach to post release DLC, with space set aside for 3 ‘seasons’ of additional purchasable content confirmed during the initial announcement.

More news will follow, as and when it becomes available.

Interesting fact! GRID Autosport had VR support

http://blog.codemasters.com/grid/10/grid-autosport-oculus-rift-support/

But I guess it'll take more Oculus investment for this title to get it.

I tried it back when I still owned an Oculus DK2, and for what it was it worked surprisingly well.
Unfortunately I couldn't get it to work on the Oculus CV1, and I even held onto the DK2 for longer than I should have just to play this game once in a while.
I lost access to it when I sold the DK2 while I was still able to recoup what I had originally paid for it.
Too bad, as it was fun in VR, but not THAT fun, LOL!

If for some bizarre reason Codies chooses to have VR for this latest GRID offering, I'm in...but ONLY after it has been released and actually works (looking at you DiRT Rally 2.0).

So, this will likely go up against Forza 8

I don't mind fun racers and titles like GRID as these were rather sweet to play on a PC with additions like triple screens or high refresh rates. Something you couldn't do on the consoles.

So even if it is not trying to be a serious sim, this new GRID could (once again) be an ideal title and great way for console owner "racing fans" who are embracing PC gaming.

Seriously **** those who name their games like their previous title, it makes searching for it 100% harder.

The first GRID is one of my favourite racing game (despite the braindead AI), but I hated GRID 2 and I did not play with Autosport. It looks promising, but no hype from me yet.

"Progression is rewarded through liveries, player cards (!!!!), team mates, achievements and driving accolades."

This game seems to have mirco transactions. What do you think player cards mean?
Good night Codemasters...

I think you misunderstood. Player Cards are rewards, not items to buy. Will be some sort of reward collection system.

If the physics of this game are on the level of Dirt 2.0 and F1 series, I'm definitely buying.

A racing game doesn't have to be a super hardcore sim to a. be fun, b. feel like you're really driving, c. drive naturally. Even hardcore sims often have certain areas which are very digital, unatural, and just plain unrealistic (especially at or over the limit behavior). So as long as a "less sim" / simcade game drives naturally and not all wonky then, for me, it's awesome.

As I predicated over 10 years ago, most racing games (not just hardcore sims) are transitioning to ever more and more natural driving physics. Even most arcade or "simcade" games are much more natural/realistic to drive now than they were 10, even 5, years ago.

There was a time when I would have scoffed at games like Dirt 2.0 and this trailer for GRID (hopefully it doesn't disappoint) but the Codemasters F1 2017 made me eat my words.

Videogame makers need to start including demos though. Maybe 1-2 tracks, 2-3 types of cars. If I never lucked out into trying F1 2017 by complete fluke at some one's house with a steering wheel, I would have never bought it.

I just played a bit of GRID Autosport recently. Couldn't stand the handling after years of Assetto Corsa and DiRT Rally. I wish they made it a bit more like a sim now, but that doesn't seem to be their focus by looking at the CGI trailer. However, I'm all for racing games that don't focus solely on GT3 / GTE cars. That second with the Alfas gave me a little bit of hope.

Grid Autosport was one of the first racing games I purchased. Now deleted as its nowhere near AC and others, nor should it be. But I am hopeful the new may be fun. I will await reviews with interest.
