Intro and Qualification
The team felt we had enough consistent pace on primes to try a prime-option 1 stop strategy. Wet qualification saw us 5th (+2.3sec) on grid. As we had planned to do the first stint on primes that position was around the teams expectations. The only negative was that we had hoped that the front runners would have taken some life out of their options in quali.
Early Laps
There was some pretty aggressive driving and risk taking in the opening laps from some drivers. When I arrived at turn 10 (not the Forza guys the actual turn) it looked like a cross between a lawn mowing convention and a garage sale. I imagine the incidents cost some quick teams valuable time but the Virgin was through unscathed despite taking significant contact from the Mercedes at the inside of turn 10.
Mystic passed us in turn 11 in these first laps. To make our strategy work we needed to remain in contact with the leaders over the first stint. We stayed within a second or two of Mystic and the #2 car for the first 9 laps and were building a gap on 4th. #2 pitted on lap 9 giving us 2nd place. Mystic was consistently fast and built his gap to around 6 sec before his pit stop at lap 12. We took the lead at this point and Mystic rejoined in second place with a gap of about 10 sec to 1st.
The Rest
Over laps 13 to 21 Mystic closed the gap to a couple of seconds and while paying too much attention to him I missed the braking point for turn 1 running wide and allowing Mystic a relatively easy pass. This was two laps B4 our planned stop on lap 23 and we were making good lap times on the primes so stayed out as planned pitting at lap 23. We returned to the track and next time around saw a gap of 4 sec to Mystic as he had chosen to pit for options to cover our planned attack over the last 10 laps. This effectively neutralised our plan as he had both track position and options and therefore pace. Mystic pulled about 1 sec a lap from us leaving a 13 sec gap at the chequered flag. Seeing I could not catch Mystic we turned the engine down and drove conservatively for the last 5 laps.

Overview
We are very happy with the teams first ever podium in league racing. We maximised the opportunity and could not have beaten Mystic here. Some fast teams suffered from incidents but we had good pace and would have most likely been in the mix anyway today. The strategy worked for us keeping us clear of the field and gave us a chance to attack for the win if any mistakes were made. There was some excellent clean racing by the front runners but in my view we need a lot more care/courtesy from some drivers.

General note about being lapped:

As a driver with not insubstantial experience at being lapped and some more recent experience at lapping others I wanted to say:
Spain saw two quite contrasting behaviours from lapped cars.
a) Fighting for position on the track with the car one lap ahead (definite no no) and
b) Jumping off the track into the kitty litter to make way, compromising their own race. (no fun for them).
I have found that if you wait for the turn exit and move over from the racing line and lift off the throttle for a few seconds it is safer and will do the job. There are fewer places on turn entry that will work.
Cheers

Good points David,

In my earlier races I was so paranoid at baulking the leaders as they came through and spoiling their races that I used to dive off no matter where I was and consequently cost myself stacks of time. However, I have I managed to give way much better now without too much cost to either myself or the faster car. One day maybe I'll be that car lol

I've been to the doctors today for a health check and my blood pressure is up! I told him it was all down to a connection failure and I'm racing at Monaco next week. He just looked at me and shook his head, oh well if only he knew! I was thinking Thursday Pete and anyone else interested about 8. 20% race. This is open to change of course.
