Kunos Simulazioni have confirmed the stunning new BMW M6 GT3 will be coming to the Assetto Corsa racing simulation in 2017. Today's announcement brings and end to recent speculation regarding the possibility of the BMW car list receiving an update towards the end of this year.

With the ageing Z4 ending its competitive life last season, BMW entered with the new M6 GT3 and the car has received rave reviews for the unparalleled handling of the new chassis. Already seeing some success on the racetrack, the new M6 has very quickly taken over where the Z4 left off and finds itself at the sharp end of many a GT3 field. Powered by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, the power train has dry sump lubrication and generates up to 585 hp – with the whole car weighing less than 1,300 kilograms.

By way of the official Assetto Corsa Twitter account, the guys over at Kunos have confirmed the M6 will be making an appearance in Assetto Corsa during 2017. No details on when a release can be expected, or indeed if it will be a free standalone car or part of a larger DLC bundle, but keep your eyes peeled at RaceDepartment and we'll let you know as soon as more news is available.

In other news, Stefano Casillo has shared a preview image of the improvements made to reflection quality in the upcoming version of the sim (see below). The visual tweaks coupled with potentially significant gains in performance can only mean good news for fans of the Assetto Corsa.

Can anyone explain how the licencing works?

Do Kunos have to pay per car? Or do they pay a fee for a length of time and can release anything?

BMW have a few cars in the game, and have multiple variants of some. Is it the teams that are a problem? or BMW or the motorsport division?

Seems weird that a manufacturer has a spot in the game, has a lot of cars in that game yet still can mess things about. Maybe they wanted more money for this extra car? In which case fair play to Kunos for saying stuff you!

Most of the time they license car by car because I'm pretty sure that a manufacturer license is incredible costly and only affordable for Tripple A Studios. I'm not sure if that was the case with Lotus though but just because the brand is in the game they don't have the rights to produce every car they want (sadly :D)

That's not a scratch made car though. It's a rip.

I get your point, scratch made cars are always better. But at least we have a quite decent one. There are worser rips out there. Too bad they blew it off though.

Personally, I would like to see Kunos boarding the GT3 hypetrain, like R3E and rFactor 2 are doing right now.
There is a lot of GT3 content, but a few important ones are missing.

We have a huge amount of GT3 cars already. They are awesome cars, I love to drive them, but it makes no sense to keep excessively bloating a single class. The BMW seems like a really nice car but it's not much of a loss not to have it in AC since there are so many GT3s to drive. The game does not need to have every single GT3 in existence

I, personally, respectfully disagree. If you see how many GT3 servers are online, and the fun they are to drive. Like the last DLC, although these are nice cars, I rarely drive road cars in the game. I rather have some GT3/GTE/WTCC(R)/DTM/GR(A456) content.

You have a point there, not focussing on 1 spectrum of all the classes. There are some more cars which are very welcome :)

That's exactly the point. GT3 is BY FAR the most fleshed out class in AC with what, nearly a dozen cars? The next best class is probably GTE/LM with a whopping 4 cars, beyond that you're looking at mostly single make races. So as you can see Kunos has been on the GT3 hype train for a very long time, to the point that all the other classes have been neglected. So what we get is a whole lot of GT3 servers and then pretty much nothing for people who want to race something other than GT3.

And that won't change with releases of cars in other classes. Most people want to drive GT3 cars. That's just how it is.

I love them, too, but I also want to see more of other things. I'd love to see a ~1968 Formula 2 or 3 car, probably more than anything else. But that's unlikely to happen.
