We've got 21 sign ups, and only 8 downloads so far... Not installing this patch will prevent you connecting to the race server on Friday. You need to have it installed.

What does the patch actually do?

Expands the available slots to 30 from 21. It doesn't do anything fancy, as I don't think the mod can really be improved that much, especially not by me.

It's essentially a one line edit in the rfm file, but as you know, mismatching rfms prevent joinups.
